Many common legends about cinnamon says that large birds would gather the sticks. Stories explained how people dislodged the birds to get to the sticks.One story says people would give the birds large pieces of meat. The meat would get to heavy for the nest causing the sticks to fell to the ground where they could be gathered. It was used in the ancient Egyptian embalming process. It was said that after Roman Emperor Nero killed his wife he ordered a year supply of cinnamon to be burnt out of remorse. Romans believed the spice to be sacred and often burnt it at funerals. Ancient Hebrews used its oil in anointing rituals. Cinnamon was supposedly one of the ingredients used by the Phoenix to make their sacred fire from which they are reborn.
