Hmm, I hope chapter 4 is better... ^^
Chapter 4- A Team!?
I was awakened with a jolt after a short dream. My instincts told me that I should go back to sleep, but I was too preoccupied with the thought of what the rest of the outer estate looked like. So I pushed back the covers, and stood up on the cool, hard wood floors, trying not to make any noise as to wake Sophie. I picked up my clothes that I wore the previously and put them on. I slipped on my shoes and quietly slid open the door. I walked out, completely unaware of the eyes watching me from the stairs. I went through identical hallway after hallway until I thought that I was going in circles. But then I made a sharp turn to the right and I came face-to-face with the front door. I quietly opened the door and walked onto the dew-covered grass. Everything was still and silent. The only light came from a full moon overhead. So everything was flooded with moonlight. I walked along a small dirt path through miles of tall grass, which had become a sea of rolling hills. I walked like this, silent and mind racing, for a mile or two, until I stumbled on a small oasis. There was a small, peaceful pond. There were frogs croaking quietly and crickets chirping. In the pond, carp fish swam around in circles. There was a large willow tree hanging over the pond like a protector. I decided to go and sit down, my feet were start to ache from all the walking I had done. I sat down on a clump of soft grass at the base of the tree and stared out toward the pond, which was starting to fog over. I could get used to this. I just hope there are other mammals here. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself I drank from another person like that. The more I pondered on that thought, the more I believed that it was true. I knew that, for a fact that I didn’t want to drink from any more people here. This is going to be my new home. And I didn’t shudder at the idea. This was for the greater good. I announced to my self silently that, if I ever drink in this place… I mean Kolea that it would not be on a person of any kind… even if they deserved it. That last part was hard to spit out. “You know you really shouldn’t be out here, Twilla. Sophie might catch you.” Just then I realized that Allen had appeared next to me. He was laying down, facing me, his head propped up against his hand. “Yes, I do.” I replied in a matter-of-fact fashion. “Then why are you out here?” He was too curious for his own good. “Curiosity killed the cat you know… But I will humor you. I am out here because I wanted some peace and quiet.” I retorted. “Is it not quite in the house?” It was hard to be patient with him. “Yes, but it is an uneasy quiet. This is a natural quiet. You can tell the difference. But, if you don’t mind me asking, why are you out here?” I was being too polite… and I knew it. “I followed you. I was wondering why you were up when everyone else wasn’t.” His eyes were filled with fascination. “Really… So why were you up in the first place then?” This is fun… I thought to myself sarcastically. “Couldn’t sleep.” He said, standing up. “Oh, really? Is that so?” I was being overly sarcastic, and I stood up also. He was staring deep into my eyes now, like he was searching for something. What is he looking for? My thoughts were probably written across my face. He hesitantly leaned toward me. Uh oh… this might get complicated… But who ever said a little complication hurt anybody? That was my last thought before he closed the space between us. My lips shaped themselves around his. His hand found the incline of my waist and pulled me toward him. My breathing became uneven and Allen smiled. My hands were already around his neck so I seized onto the roots of his golden hair and pulled him closer to me. His arms constricted around my waist, bowing me against his body. I pulled him closer still. His tongue grazed my fangs. Oh no… I thought, but he didn’t seem to really notice. But because I could go longer without oxygen, Allen was the first to stop. He, just barely, moved his lips away from mine the slightest bit, so he could breathe. “Now, that wasn’t so bad, was it?” he asked, out of breath and pulling his face away from mine. But his hands still held firm onto my waist. I raised an eyebrow. “Oh, don’t give me that. You did kiss me back, did you not?” I sighed. “This is going to be complicated. Very complicated…” “Who ever said a little complication hurt anybody?” he asked. He didn’t want this to end. Nor did I. “My words exactly.”
I awoke to Sophie shaking me and yelling, “Twilla…! Twilla…! You have to get up!! Kane has disappeared!!” I slowly opened one eye and glared at her. I did not care where she was. I was busy sleeping. “Go away, Sophie.” I said flatly. She was still shaking me and was getting on my reserve nerve. I sat up and got into her personal space. “WHAT…?! What is so important that you cannot wait five freakin’ minutes!?” I yelled at her. “Kane is missing! Allen woke me up this morning, saying that Kane had completely disappeared into thin air!” She carried off into nothingness, mumbling and throwing her hands into the air. “You must be kidding me!!” I decided that making her stop was worth more than it seemed. “Okay, Sophie. Do you have any ideas; any leads?” She shook her head. “You’re the one who’s known him for almost ever! How am I supposed to know where he is? That is why I came to you…!” “Uh…” I knew that I didn’t know him for that long. I only met him... oh I don’t know… yesterday? How was I supposed to know? “Why don’t we ask Allen? He was his roommate…” I was out of ideas... though I only had one, anyway… “Yea…! Great idea…! You are so smart!” She was acting stupid… like a three-year-old. So she left me to get changed- I had changed back to my pajamas once Allen and I walked back. I opened the bureau, and to my great surprise, was now filled with very different-looking ensembles. Robes-like pants and tops in many different colors took the majority of the drawer, with cloaks and red silk dresses, like the one Sophie was wearing, filled the gaps. “This will be very interesting…” I said, raising an eyebrow. I picked up a pair of crimson- colored, robe-like pants that would hang loosely from my waist, and I threw them onto the messy bed. Then I rummaged through the rest of the drawer until I finally found the matching top. The top was quite different in comparison to the pants. It was long and cut off below my hip. It looked like the top half of a kimono, except it had small horizontal cuts that started from below the shoulder and went on until the pattern stopped above my elbow. The hem on both the pants and the top was black with a crimson flower design. I slipped off my pajamas and pulled on the pants. Just as I suspected, they hung loosely from my hips. They were almost too big to fit at all. Oh well… they will have to do… I thought to myself. Then I slipped on my top- having to try over and over again to actually find the hole meant for your head. I looked at myself in the mirror. But when I looked down onto the chest, there were two beautifully carved black chopsticks, just sitting there. How beautiful… I inserted them into my hair and looked myself over once more. Suddenly, everything went black, like the electricity had gone out. I heard a scream and I was pushed to the floor by a pair of invisible hands. There was a green glow in front of me, and at the center was a lady- a lady with dark skin and golden hair and eyes. She seemed to be floating before me, staring down upon me like I was her daughter that she was to take under her wing. “Twilla…” She said calmly, soothingly. Her voice was beautiful, like velvet, just like her. “Twilla, why are you afraid of me?” She asked. I was completely oblivious of who she was, or why she was here… Of course my thoughts were written all over my face…! “Twilla… Do not be afraid. I am here to help you…” I said nothing, but I started to listen. She sighed. “My name is Calvin… or I am a part of Calvin. When she… we… came here in search of my master, Jasper Morton, everyone doubted us. But we proved them wrong. We found him in his sanctuary, but he wasn’t himself. He was this glowing figure… just like I am.” She paused to examine her transparent figure. “He looked at us… and smirked…” She shivered. “I can still remember the way he looked at us… It chilled me to the bone. Nothing was ever scarier; for the whole time I have been in here…! He came closer to us, and extended out a hand…!” She was sobbing now. Wow… she is quite open… considering what she is… I stood up. “So you’re her?” she nodded, though it was hard to tell considering that her face was buried in her face. “So you have been here… sense when?” I was finally getting into the conversation. “I have been in here ever sense we came to search for Jasper… ever sense.” She stopped crying, and –to me- it looked like she was sitting on air… she was floating, but she was crossed legged and was closer to the ground, still not touching it. “You keep saying, ‘we.’ What exactly does ‘we’ mean?” I asked. “My body and myself… When he extended that hand, he sucked me out of my body!! And I cannot get back to my body for he is in it! There is no hope!” “So…” I raked my brain for any questions that she would be able to answer. “Do you know why you were experimenting on that immortal?” “I don’t know! That wasn’t even me! That was Jasper!! He was the one who was doing tests! I saw him… me… stick needle after needle in him. His blood flowed… more than once! One, I am afraid, was caused be you! You turned him into a vampire!! You turned him into a blood sucker!!” She looked disgusted. “I am sorry. It was either him or Sophie. I need her to leave! I just can’t stay here forever…!” I was started to smolder. “NO YOU DIDN’T!! You didn’t need to do anything! You could have controlled yourself!” She stood up, while still levitating, and tried to smack me. But her hand went right through my head. “Dang it!! I can’t do anything! I don’t have a physical body anymore!!” She settles down, while still standing. “I’m sorry that I did that. That was unacceptable. Please, let me make it up to you. I will accompany you in your search for your friend…” I made a questioning face. “Oh… that is Rave, isn’t it?” I nodded. “Well then… maybe we can figure out something. Oh I know…!” She was getting really excited… scary...! “I will be your guardian! It’s not like anyone else can see me…!” She looked very proud. “You mean, I am the only one who can see you?!” I was a bit frightened. “Yep. That means that I can go with you! We can be a team!” “No.” “Why not?!” “Because… well… I bet you can’t even get out of the house!” I complained. “Oh, is that so…? Then how am I able to do… this?’” She walked from the room and I followed. The whole house and everything else was in an unnatural darkness. Not only that, they were not moving! She had stopped time!! She walked outside and breathed in the cool, crisp air. “Ha!” She said, putting her hands on her hips and smiled mockingly. “Fine…! We can be a team! If we are a team, will you help me leave?” I asked desperately. “Absolutely!” She laughed like a giddy school girl who just won a game of jump rope or hop-scotch.
I had gone back to my room to find Sophie sitting on by bed. “Where were you, Twi? I thought you said that you would help me find Kane!” “I had to use the bathroom…” I said casually, lying to her face. “Okay, Twilla. Maybe we can go now then?! Or are you going to go and do some other random thing?!” She was furious, I could tell. “We can go now.” I said calmly, like whatever emotions that was welding up inside her didn’t bother me the slightest bit. Sophie stood up and made a face. “Okay, let’s go! We have reservations for lunch, so let’s find him quickly!” And with that, we ran out of the house.
