The complexity of role plays on Gaia Online: My experience in Gaia role play dynamics Too start off let me set my record straight. I’m am 22 years of age and have been role playing since the age of 10. I’m sure you can do the math but I’ll spell it out for you anyways; basically 12 years of my life I have been actively role playing. During those years I spend many a moon role playing off Neopets.com or the occasional chat room. In most situations you would arrive in the role play ask to be a character and then if the character wasn’t taken you’d get to be that character. Granted most of these except for a few long term roleplays, was a short roleplay only lasting between 30 minutes up to 4 hours. Every now and then I’d find someone that I really enjoyed roleplaying with and we would exchange e-mails or msn screen names and our roleplay would continued. All of my favorite roleplays I have ever done fall in the later rarer category. After a while neopets started enforcing rules upon roleplays that made it harder and harder to actually roleplay. Shuttling the few that held hope that a decent roleplay on neopets was possible to guilds or just leaving the site entirely. I like many grew tired of all the restrictions and searched for other places to roleplay. If you go to my neopets account (Flamezcat is my S/N) you’ll see that I left a message on my look up that basically states that I am gone from the site. I am still there but only active in the warrior’s guild that exceeded my expectation and welcomed me in as a medicine cat. I dare not venture onto the roleplays forums on neopets for I lost hope for them a long time ago. A few months ago my sister invited me to join Gaia online. Now, I have known about Gaia for over 2 years but never made account do to my strict loyalty to the monstrosity that is neopets. I was reluctant to make the switch at first, I knew people on neopets, also my account on neopets is a very good account. It took my sister some strong convincing to just make an account, but I did under the promise of better roleplays. It also seemed to help that my sister gave me a few thing to spice up what would have been a pretty dull avatar. So after I made an obnoxious looking avatar and dressed it up in equally obnoxious clothing I was set to start my adventures on Gaia Online. My first impression of Gaia was: why avatars? I didn’t understand the reason for my little buddy in the corner of the screen. After all I was just here for the roleplays. Ignoring my first impressions I set off to find myself a role play but I was abruptly stopped by my sister as she said I had to do a profile. A few more wasted hours of my life yielded me a semi decent yet somewhat novice profile. Now I was able to roleplay… Only now I had no clue where to find the roleplays. A few more wasted hours of my life brought me to the guilds forums roleplay section. My jaw hit the floor (In typical anime style might I add) as soon as I saw how many replies most of these roleplay’s had. My neopets experience was if a topic had over 30 posts the roleplay was generally closed to newcomers. With topics that had over 1000 post I was shocked beyond all else. How was I going to be able to understand what was going on much less join any of these roleplays? My only option was to lurk and figure out how gaians interact in these roleplays. I learned a lot of things by watching. First off in order to join any roleplay, a roleplay sample must be provided. Second, if you are bringing in a character that is made up you are to fill out a form. The role play sample is easy. I am a 12 year roleplay and I consider myself a top notch roleplay or at least some one that can be considered ‘literate’. A sample is something I have plenty of, but these forms… They are something else. Sure the first few lines are easy to fill out but then they want details. I can understand why they do these but some of these can take quite a considerable time to fill out for a character you don’t even know for sure you’ll be playing. If you ask me they are a pain in the butt that I’d prefer to skip but I’d still be willing to do one should I be asked to do so. So far this is really all I have learned, I still basically clueless on the enigma that is gaia online roleplay. So I’ll continue my research hoping for find a roleplay I can fit into. My previous entry gives a brief overview of my skills and roleplay types I do, if you are reading this and interested in a roleplay.
