Full Moon Part 1 Chapter 1
The cool brezze of the forest was the only thing Katrina could feel. This was the only way she knew she was stiil in the forest. She was still safe. For now. She opened her sleepy hazel eyes and looked around the dark, quiet wood. She was able to make out the shape of Alex's leg against her arm, and looked up to see his sleeping form. The dark purple circles under his eyes were getting worse everyday they were out in the wild. His jet black hair hung in his face, and brushed her forehead as she stared at him in the dark. His arms were wrapped around her shoulders and his tail around her ankle. She then realized that her tail was around his whole leg, winding it's way up to his thigh. She sighed and leaned back onto Alex's chest, trying to decide if she should go back to sleep, or wake up Alex so that they could keep moving. Katrina glanced over to where the small fire that they had made earlier to produce as much heat as possible in the winter air, had died out. She carefully reached out to touch the spot and nodded.
It was as cold as Alex's skin.
Katrina reached up and lightly tapped Alex's forehead to wake him up. He stirred slightly, and then dipped his head down to her ear.
"What? It's too early to be awake."
"No, it's too late to be asleep. We've slept for about five hours. We need to get moving."
Alex was reluctant to move from his spot against the tree, and simply shifted positions so that he had brought Katrina closer to him, and was holding her a bit tighter. She grunted as he squeezed the air from her already struggling lungs, and he chuckled in her ear. He smiled and lifted a finger to her nose and tapped it lightly. "If you would just listen to me and go back, we would have to worry about sleeping too late. I told you you wouldn't have to worry about the punishment. I'll have to go through it also so I'll take half the blame. You don't have to go it alone." He brushed her cheek with the back of his hand and squeezed her tighter.
"Alex! Can't. . . Breath!" Katrina bit his hand softly, but her razor sharp teeth caused a small p***k in his hand. Once he let go, she inhaled deeply after crawling away from his grasp. "I'm not going back. I really wish you would stop trying to change my mind. There's nothing for me back there besides you. And you're here, so what's the point. And I'm not going to let you take the blame for something that has to do with me." She stood and looked around, searching the forest for any sign of movement. All she could see was the slight rattle of the reings of the black stallions she and Alex were riding. "We need to go. Now"
Alex stood also and sniffed the air cautiously before pushing Katrina towards the horses. "You're right. Someone's either been here, still here, or really close by. Ride North. Follow the river. I'll catch up with you soon." He whispered low in her ear so even she had to strain to hear everything he was saying. She nodded and mounted her horse with help from Alex before looking around and scanning the surrounding wood with her mind. She could fell the presence, but it wasn't as close as Alex had made it out to be. It was actually leaving, instead of stalking them. She let out a sigh of relief which gained a strange, confused look from Alex who had mounted his horse as well.
"Whoever it is or was, there're leaving. But I suggest we do the same to be safe. I don't want to risk getting caught." Katrina adjusted the braclet on her wrist until she heard a small beep, and a small blue light came on. She looked up at the sky and smiled.
The moon was almost full.
In two nights, she and Alex would be able to finally hunt, and noone would give a second thought as to how many animals have died. She heard Alex's braclet beep also, and guided Starlight beside Alex's horse, Firelight and stared at him for a moment before she nudged his leg with her foot. "What's wrong? You look upset." Katrina noticed that Alex's eyes were a bit darker than usual. Almost black, which meant that something was up and he was trying not to let it show.
"I'm just worried about. . . .Kidoshi. Well, yours mainly. What are going to do then? I don't think I can stand seeing you like that." He looked away and chided Firelight to a slow trot North. "If we hope to be somewhere safe during that time, we'll have to haul major a**. I can't leave you out here, or try to travel with you, when you're in that state."
Kidoshi was what their people called the sixteenthand seventeenth birthday of a shapeshifter. During this time, their bodies, would undergo a transformation, which would last for one complete year, stating at midnight on their sixtennth birthday, and ending the same time of their seventeenth. Katrina and Alex were both only 15, with only a short while to go before Kidoshi.
Katrina sighed and urged Starlight infront of Alex to block his path. She looked him in the eye as he gazed back at her. "Alex, I've told you before biggrin on't worry about me. I'll get through it, and so will you. You of all people should know that I'm alot tougher than I look." She smiled at him and made her horse back up a bit so that she could be even with Alex again. "Since we were kids I've always been able to take care of myself. You always worried when there was no need to. Like the time in the river." She laughed softly and convinced Starlight to trot ahead and was still laughing when Alex came up beside her.
"There was plenty of reason to worry then! You didn't even see James swimming under you! You should be thanking me for that." He laughed and jabbed a finger at her in the air. They were both laughing by the time they coaxed the stallions to a full run, heading deeper into the forest.
"You were just being paranoid. Even if I hadn't seen James, nothing would have happened. Well, not to me anyway."
"Exactly. If he had gotten you, and you broke free, he might have lost his manhood before he even got to use it.!"
"Not that he ever would! I would have been doing him and all the other girls in the village a favor!"
Alex threw his head back and laughed as they neared a small pond. They were moving fast, and had gone about a mile or two within the few moments they were riding. They stopped at the pond and let the horses drink, as the moon rose higher in the sky. They sat at the edge of the pond for a while, glancing at each other frequently, and giggling like little school girls gossiping. After a while, they re-mounted Starlight and Firelight, and continued on their way, still snickering at each other.
By the time the moon was directly overhead, Alex and Katrina had travled over fifty. Neither were able to tell how long they'd been ridding, But both knew that it was midnight. Katrina sighed as she realized that they both only had another month before Kidoshi. She took a deep breath to calm herself and did another mind sweep of the forest. They were safe for the moment, but she would rather they kept moving. Even the smallest risk of getting caught, gave Katrina chills, that sent shudders through her whole body. She checked her braclet, and noted that the light on it was still shinning, but slowly dimming. When she raised her head again, she noticed that Alex was moving slower than his usual cautious pace. Her had a slight frown contorting his features, but his eyes had lightened, and were now a deep blue color. Then, the look suddenly dissappeared, and was instantly replaced by a look of pure joy and amuzement.
"What do you look so happy about? You look like you're about to play a joke on someone." She watched as Alex turned his head to the side slightly, laughed and then burst into a full run, leaving her behind dazed and confused. When she finally recovered, she laughed also, and urged Starlight to regain the ground lost between them and Alex. She could hear to the horses breathing as she tried to pull as much speed as she could from her powerful legs, and see her breath curling from her snout and becoming lost with the wind. She was just close enough to reach out and grab the sleeve of Alex's shirt, when he made a sharp left turn, and then a right. Katrina followed him for a while noticing what he was doing and determined to beat him at his own game. They rode like this for a while, untill Katrina found a way to trick Alex, and ended up infront of him.
"Hey! No fair! I call cheats!" Alex laughed and struggled to regain his position in first place, but never did as the moon began to set, and the river came closer.
