Chapter 6
Sarl reappeared frozen in place by Jeremy's bedside. He shook himself lightly and made his was downstairs. He stooped down to pick up the large bundle of coats he had left on the floor just as Morigan was beginning to stir.
"Get up," he ordered, picking up a small wooden pitcher and throwing it at her head.
"Ugh," she groaned feebly.
"I said get up! Or do you need me to throw something heavier at you?" Sarl demanded, walking over to her.
"I'll get up when I'm damn ready," she retorted, curling up into a ball on the floor.
"Now!" he screamed angrily, kicking her in the stomach.
Morigan uncurled and turned her face up to look at him.
"You don't have to kick me!" she yelled, crying.
"I have to kick you if you won't do what I say. Now get up."
Morigan stood up unsteadily, stifling her tears.
"Good. Now come," Sarl said, turning towards the stairs. Morigan followed silently after him as he climbed back up the stairs, the clothes still bundled in his arms. When the entered Jeremy's room, she hurried in front of him to get next to Jeremy.
"He's-dying-Sarl," she managed to say as she broke back down into tears.
"Don't you think I know that?" Sarl asked arrogantly, pushing Morigan out of the way and dropping the clothes on the floor. He placed a hand over the clothes and a small, curved, glowing silver bottle flew out of one of the pockets into his outstretched hand.
"And you say I abuse magic!" Morigan exclaimed.
"When did I say that?" he asked calmly.
"It doesn't matter! That won't help anyway."
"Correction. It will help if he's dying because he's reacting badly to Percival's death."
"But Percival's not dead!" Morigan blurted out. "Now get out of the way!"
"Who ever said Percival's not dead?" Sarl growled, turing to face Morigan with stony eyes.
"You... You killed him!"
"Is that not what I'm implying?"
"You b*****d!" Morigan shreiked, bashing Sarl as hard as she could with her fists. Sarl just stood his ground, taking the blows like a giant boulder. Finally, Morigan fell to her knees crying.
"Why do you care?" Sarl asked with contempt. "You barely knew him. He meant nothing to you or me."
"Because of what that's doing to Jeremy!" she screeched angrily, straighting herself up.
"Well if you'd shut up, maybe I could help him," he replied haughtily.
"Fine. But I'm sure as hell not leaving you alone with him."
"Doesn't matter to me."
Sarl stepped closer to Jeremy, watching the boy's movement closely. He was more still than he had been before, but he still tossed and turned constantly.
"If you don't want him to die, hold him still."
Morigan stepped around to the other side of Jeremy's bed and pinned his torso to the bed.
"Hmph. Not the best but it'll do," Sarl commented distractedly as he uncorked the glowing bottle. He leaned down over Jeremy until he could feel the boy's strained breath. Sarl opened Jeremy's mouth and carefully poured the silver water down Jeremy's mouth unti; not a drop remained.
All of a sudden, Jeremy began to writhe violently. Morigan recoiled in fear.
"I told you to hold him!" Sarl bellowed as he grabbed Jeremy's head in a attempt to keep is still. Jeremy only writhed for a few more seconds, but it took all of Sarl's strength to keep him still.
"He's fine now." Sarl stated exhaustedly as he fell back against the wall, sweat shining on his forehead in the firelight.
Morigan collapsed onto Jeremy's body, hugging his shoulders as tight as she could.
"What a truly heartwarming moment," Sarl murmured sarcastically. "Why couldn't you keep him still?" he asked Morigan crossly, but she couldn't hear him.
Sarl sighed sadly as he stood up lazily. She was such a child sometimes.
"Where are you going?" Morigan asked without turning away from Jeremy.
"Downstairs. Going to sleep. Suggest you do the same. No use coddling him. We're leaving tomarrow," he said tiredly.
"Leaving?" she asked. "Where are we going?"
"North. Where else? I'm going out early to hire a guide and get supplies. In the morning, get my books ready. And anything else you want, because we're not coming back."
"North?!" Morigan asked in disbelief. "I'm not going north and neither is Jeremy. We're already north enough!"
"No, we're not. We're not nearly north enough. And we don't have time to waste, so don't even ask," Sarl said as he disappeared downstairs.
