Krosette's Duplicate Notes MATHEMATICS 3Q
3rd Quarter

MATHEMATICS

October 9, 2007, Tuesday

Things to do:
1. Check PT
2. Review GCF & LCM
3. Add/Subtract Rationals

GCF
- Greatest Common Factor

LCM
- Least Common Multiple

Prime Factor Method

example 1:

Get the GCF and LCM of 8 and 12.

8
- 2 * 2 * 2
12 - 2 * 2 * 3

To get the GCF using Prime Factor Method:
1. Bring out the factors of the given numbers
2. Get the common factors of the given numbers
3. Multiply if necessary

GCF: 2 * 2 = 4

To get the LCM using Prime Factor Method:
1. Bring out the factors of the given numbers
2. Get the GCF and multiply it to the remaining uncommon factors of the given numbers.

LCM: 4 * 2 * 3 = 24

example 2:
Get the GCF and LCM of 21 and 24.

21 - 3 * 7
24 - 2 * 2 * 2 * 3

GCF: 3
LCM: 3 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 7 = 168

example 3:
Get the GCF and LCM of 3x and 18 x^2
3x - 3 * x
18x^2 - 2 * 3 * 3 * x * x

GCF: 3x
LCM: 3x * 2 * 3 * x = 18x^2

example 4:
Get the GCF and LCM of x^2-4 and x-2.

x^2-4 - (x-2) (x+2)
x-2 - (x-2)

GCF: (x-2)
LCM: (x-2) (x+2)

Adding and Subtracting Rationals

1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3
Rule: Make sure they have similar denominators

LCD
- Least Common Denominator

example 1:
1/8 + 3/12

get the LCD (getting the LCD is getting the LCM of the dissimilar denominators):
LCD of 8 and 12 is 24.

1. divide the LCD to the 1st dissimilar denominator and multiply to the numerator; that is your numerator and the LCD is now your denominator.
2. do the same to the 2nd dissimilar denominator.
3. Add the fractions with similar denominators.

3 + 6 /24 = 9/24 = 3/8

Things to do:
1. Discuss Project (25 min.)
2. Check HW (15 min.)
3. 2 examples (20 min.)

examples:

7/(a-b) - 3/(b-a)
*factor it out*
7/(a-b) - 3/-1(a-b)
*multiply -1 to the negative sign, making it positive*
7/(a-b) + 3/(a-b) = 10/(a-b)
