I'm making this thread for everyone who loses their job from a plant closing, or for you younger folks wondering what careers will be stable when all the industry is being stupid & greedy and running overseas for the sake of short-term profits at the expense of their quality and their reputations for same. In my Career Transitions course, we're beginning to realize something..... YOU CAN'T SEND EVERYTHING TO CHINA! So let's make a nice list here! What jobs are safe? What careers will still be here 20, 30 or more years down the line? And if you want, you can say something about the pay or whatever you like. I'll start with some I'm hearing about in my course.

Here we go....
*MORTICIAN!--People aren't gonna stop dying anytime soon! *FOOD SERVICES (Cook, Chef, Baker, Cake Decorator, etc.)--People aren't gonna stop eating fresh foods, either! *HEALTH CARE!--Won't get that from overseas! *WELDERS!--Machines are gonna need to be fixed or replaced or removed, and that takes a welder to weld things together or cut them out. Nobody's gonna send for a Welder to come from China to do that! *HVAC Service People!--Nobody's gonna send for a service guy to come over from Asia to fix their heating, air conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration units or appliances, either!

What about school teachers? American kids may go to overseas colleges and universities but they have to graduate from high school first. Most of their schooling will be in the US.

Yep! And what about the people who clean up? Sanitation Workers & Janitors won't commute here from elsewhere either! (Not the most appealing jobs--but I never said they had to be nice! smile )

I don't know....I think as long as it's something that could be sent as a file on the 'Net, it could be work sent overseas, and with the current craze for Asian styles, it's quite probable. I think that "Artist" would have to be more specific.
