Flute is a jazz instrument though. Unfortunately if your thinking a bigband or ensemble situation most directors want them to be able to improvise and sightread changes.

We had a flute player in our bigband in highschool and that person would transpose off of the first tenor part. Only lasted a few years because they were able to improvise usually i'd double on flute but that's it when i was in highschool.

We had a couple flutes in our jazz band, but you could never hear 'em. Maybe that's why they seem to not be common?

In the context of a small combo they work fine. In the context of a big band, they can be either effective or near pointless, depending on the tune.

I loved the flute in Tull. and recently I heard in with a group called J.T and the Clouds, they were awesome. And I heard a flute and a violing playing with Hugh Fraser a few days ago, also spectacular. I know, it should be more widespread.

Flutes rock like none other, and definitely have a place in a jazz band. Last year, there were a few songs that really needed to have a flute in order to sound right (Hidden Dimple, Bass Folk Song), and it was always a shame when we didn't have them.
*grins* I suddenly have an urge to grab a flute and play around with it for the next hour or so. smile
