Lunar Obstacle Race: Zephyr Kyn Name: Zephyr Bonded Name: Rowan Azura Event Rider name: Rowan Azura --- Eclipse and Zephyr ran abreast under the ceiling of leaves, both seeing who can outrace the other. Both had been reluctant when Rowan first told them that she wanted them to participate in the upcoming Obstacle course, but the two soon became enthusiastic and trained together. Especially when they learned that they might be able to bring one of their brethren home as a new member of Edoc'sil.
Through the daily exercises, the two Lunars had grown as close as blood brothers. Though Eclipse was still as quite as ever, the two were seen together more often then with their Rider.
Race ya to the Race! Zephyr told Eclipse, a grin on his face. He let out a sudden burst of speed, one that he had been reserving so that Eclipse could keep up.
Wait-- what? Eclipse called out, pushing himself harder to keep up.
Zephyr bounded over the underbrush, startling many wild animals. One Squirrel chattered angrily as he got his right paw stuck in it's under ground tunnel. Zephyr stumbled and skidded to a stop at the edge of a tree, but he soon regained him balance and continued racing. The only way he knew where he was going was through the bond with Rowan, who was already waiting at the start of the Race. Rosemary had carried her there and the red European was now circling ahead, making sure the two didn't get into any trouble.
Pfft, Rosemary seemed pretty annoyed that Europeans weren't allowed to enter, but Rowan told her that it would be unfair as she could just fly. Rose was still ticked though.
Looking back as he continued to bound through the trees, the blur of blue amongst the green and brown was easy to spot way behind him.
Have to do better then that! Zephyr laughed. After a while of continued racing -Zephyr constantly slowed down to let the slower Lunar catch up- Zeophyr skidded to a stop as he broke out of the underbrush and onto a dirt road. Rowan was sitting on a boulder waiting for him.
Eclipse came out about five minutes later, laid down on the road his side heaving as he panted. Eclipse had never been as strong of a runner as Zephyr.
Well, when's it starting? zeohyr asked as Rosemary landed on the road, folding in her wings. She looked at the woods around her with distaste- she preferred the open plains and mountains, where no trees obstructed her wings and prevented her complete freedom.
"I don't know." Rowan replied.
"Someone will tell us. I'll be Rider Eclipse for this to guide him, i trust you can take acre of yourself Zeph?"
Well duh. I'm not a hatchling no more you know.(Eclipse's entry is the exact the same except it will be from his viewpoint, not Zeph's.) Example Message

Zephyr watched with interest as Eclipse sprinted the last section of his race, both him and Rowan collapsing as soon as they crossed the finish line. The two looked beat. Zephyr grinned at the waterlogged Rowan, silently laughing. Rowan always hated water.
Well, wish me luck. Zephyr told Rose, Clip, and Ro, marching over to the starting line. It was his turn next. Sitting down at the line, someone hurried over and explained the rules to him. He listened carefully, though he knows them from Rowan's memory. A bag was given to him called the Rescue Kit and the human helped secure it across his back, tightening it so that it wouldn't fall or catch him off balance at one of the obstacles. He felt like one of those dogs sent out to find lost people with supplies strapped to their back. After a while, someone return and signaled to the human next to Zeph that he was ready. He had probably just returned from hiding the object in Obstacle 4.
"On your mark-" Zephyr got serious, bending his forelegs down while his rump was still in the air. He looked like a cat ready to pounce. His mouth was parted open to show pearly white teeth and to let out a menacing growl. he was ready.
"Get set--" Zephyr's tail twitched, and tremors shook his body. This was it! he's been training for a long time. His thoughts temporarily wandered to how exhausted Eclipse and Rowan looked. He shook himself out of it, he needed to focus on his own race!
"GO!" Zephyr took off with the speed he was born with, howling as he ran with sheer elation. This race was his for sure! He kept his bond with Rowan, as she would be telling him what each of the obstacles are and telling him what to or not to do from experience. As he neared the first obstacle though, he didn't stop to survey it as Eclipse did.
The pit was wide though Zephyr was running to fast to calculate how wide it was exactly. Just have to jump as far as he could then. As he launched himself over the pit, his hind legs slipped as they kicked off the edge. This sent him at an odd angle...headed straight for the opposite wall.
He fell in the net, and paws were caught in the man-made fibres. He growled, biting a few strings loose to free his limbs.
Don't do that! It's a safety measure, you can't just go destroy it! Came Rowan's disaproving answer to his actions, he just brushed her away with annoyance. So much for the 'easiest obstacle in the whole course'.
Taking fairly a long time, Zephyr crawled out of the net back to the solid ground that he had started with. It was a hard journey, as his canine body often got caught between the string and it took a fair amount of effort to set himself free.

Pit Jump (2nd try)

This time, Zephyr examined the pit closely. As he looked down it, it faded into darkness, though ledges can be seen on the side Zephyr was on. It was the end of the race, when they had to climb out of this very pit. Hmmm...it looks hard, the ledges weren't very near together.
Then his eyes fell on the net that had caught him before, and a few snapped strings where they have either broken because of his weight, or he just simply chewed his way free. Looking to the side, there were trees by the path but none right over the pit that would grant him acess to the other side. Measuring the pit carefully with his eyes, Zephyr estimated it to be about 4 meters across, a small jump for a Lunar.
Geez, and I couldn't get past this thing? Zephyr said to himself, backing up.
Eclipse took a run at the pit of 10 meters. It worked fine for him. Came Rowan's voice in Zeph's head. Zephyr nodded, replying with just a brush of his conciousness as he paced his distance back. The Pit was almost out of his view before he decided he was far enough back. Crouching down like he had done at the beginning of the race, Zephyr raced off.
He kicked up dirt as air rushed past his fur, ruffling and blowing it so that it snapped every which way. He loved running and he loved running fast, and in that area, he exceled. As he neared the edge of the pit, his front legs pushed off the very edge at the same time his hind legs kicked off. As he soared across the chasm, his brought his front legs out, ready to catch himself on the opposite side.
As he soared through the sky, he howled in pure happiness. Ah the sky. Unlike most other Lunars, the air is where Zephyr belonged the most. His very name bellows it: Zephyr, The west Wind. It was a wonder that fate had not decided to born him as a winged creature. The silver half of his fur gleamed in the bright sunlight and he touched down on the other end, as light as a feather. A few long steps were taken until he slowed down, his momentum absorbed.
That-was-awesome! He cried out. His fur ended up being thrown into a tangled mess and he took a moment to shake himself in order to get straightened again. Then, remembering that the race was timed, Zephyr bounded down the path to the next obstacle- the Rope Bridge.

Rope Bridge

---
Zephyr raced along the path, which was straight for the most part. Animals watched curiously from the trees as he zoomed by, dust, leaves and other debris picked up from the wind he created. He skidded to a stop as the path disappears and is replaced by a long drop below, though there are visible nets ready to catch anything that fell.
To his left, a waterfall roared, falling some great heights before crashing into the rocks below. The water split as it hit the solid surfaces, sending sprays up at an unbelievable height. Though the water was clear, the foam it created was white as snow, edging the water below. It was a wondrous sight.
I had a lot of trouble with this one. Sounded Eclipse's voice in Zeph's mind, and he listened closely as Rowan talked to him about the rope bridge. He had to be careful- paws were not designed to hold onto ropes. Eclipse had to have Rowan literally drag him across.
Hold onto at least one rope with your teeth. Advised Eclipse and Zephyr nodded mentally, taking his first step on the bridge. Surprisingly, he felt no fear of the height below, only the same wild feeling he had when he had jumped across the first obstacle. Zephyr's always had a passion for flying, one that he's always been frustrated by because of his lack of wings. He envied Rose.
Steady...steady. Taking Eclipse's advice, he kept his jaws tightened gripped on one of the ropes to his right, one that led all the way to the other side. He needn't let go of the rope as he advanced forward, one careful step at a time, as all he needed to do was to slide his teeth further along the rope before biting down hard.
His paws were having more difficulty, and though the crossing was short, Zephyr took a long time. Two time he nearly fell down if he wasn't clamping onto the rope so tightly with his jaw.
When he finally made it onto solid ground on the other side, the muscles in his jaw hurt from holding on so tightly. He was shaking slightly from the exertion, but he had no time to waste resting. Catching his breath, Zephyr raced to the next obstacle- River crossing. he was a good swimming, and by Eclipse's account, Rowan's panic in water had caused him to fail two time in a row. Without a crazed human on his back, Zephyr should have little difficulty...right?

River Cross

The Roar of the waterfall soon faded behind him as he continued down the road. He was doing pretty well so far- his only blunder had been his first, where he had been stubborn and didn't care to look over the situation. But he was more careful now. When the trickle of water in front of him could he heard, Zephyr grinned.
Water, another element he liked. He told the other clan members back at the starting line to refrain from telling him any hints. He wants to do this one alone. As he reached the water, Zephyr sniffed the ground and chuckled to himself as he picked up Rowan's scent. She must have hated this part.
Looking downstream, Zephyr's eyes can pick out a net ready to catch anyone who got swept away by the currents. Putting one paw into the water, Zephyr carefully tested the current. A bit strong, but he can manage. Making sure his right paw was planted firmly on the bed of pebbles beneath the water, he brought his left paw in front of him. Step by step, he moved quickly until the water reached his chest. once the water has more surface to push at -his main body area in other words- he would be finding it hard to keep his ground. He would have to go very carefully, one step at a time.
At one point, his foot seemed to be on solid ground and put his weight on it, bringing the next paw forward. But what he was standing on turned out to be a loose pebble and he got knocked over. Though the current was strong, he was able to return upright with his claws extended into the ground below. Somehow, he had been able to keep going.
Soon, at the middle of the river, the water went up to his face and he had to struggled to keep his snout above the water. Suddenly, he could not feel the bottom anymore and the current struggled to carry him away.
Determined, Zephyr leaped out of the water and turned so that he faced Upstream. Battling with the current, Zephyr gained a few meters before slowly turning to his right, towards the shore that he was working to cross to. He slowly began to make process, though the current threatened to drag him away every moment he spent in the water. His front paws felt rocks, but when he tried to put his weight on it, it just simply rolled towards and under him, out of reach.
Though he was exhausted and his muscled stung, he still struggled to continue forward. After a few more minutes of battling the current, all four of Zephyr's legs could keep a firm grip on the ground, and he continued to battle the water.
As soon as it dropped below his belly, Zephyr ran the rest of the way and up to shore. Shaking his head, his fur sent water every-which way. After a bit more effort to dry himself, he was no longer drenched, soggy and damp. Good enough.
Congrats. Came Rowan's voice as he described his experience to his rider.

Lantern Dig

---
Rowan relayed the instructions of the Lantern dig to Zephyr. He looked around the area and it wasn't too hard to find the small glowing substance sticking out of the ground. Sniffing it, he stayed still for a few minutes until he was sure that he would be able to pick up on any scent like it. Traveling towards the cliffs, he kept his senses alert for the object.
As he concentrated on his sense of smell, Zephyr picked up some familiar scents- Eclipse and Rowan. He tried not to follow their path, but as he followed the scent of the small object, he came across Rowan and Eclipse's scent many more times.
He started digging in many locations only to change his mind as he picks up the odd scent a bit further ahead or to the side. Finally, it came out as such a strong smell that Zephyr was sure it was right beneath him. Sniffing the area so intently that it was audible, he finally pinpoint an exact location.
Then his paws began to work. Clawing at the dirt quickly, a small mound of soil started to gather behind him as his hole began to deepen and widen. by the time he found the object, only his bottom half could be seen, his head, neck, and two forelegs in the hole. After a bit of struggling, Zephyr backed out with a small object the size of a ping-pong ball in his mouth. It was glowing green in the darkness of his mouth, though he couldn't actually see it himself.
I've got the object. The next Obstacle is? Zephyr contacted his rider, alarmed at how weak their bond was. The distance between them was starting to widen.
Stone Hop. Follow the cliff south, you'll see it easily enough. Zephyr spent a little time here to stop and lick off his paws. He was still wet from River crossing, and that made the dirt stick to his fur. After all that digging he had done, the yellowish-green paws were now coated with brown.

Following the cliff, Zephyr soon arrived at a ledge sticking out over the canyon. Proudly trotting to the edge, Zephyr investigated the area which he had to bypass. He was high above the river below, but nets had been placed there to catch him if he should fail. Great. Is that sarcasm you ask? Yes. Zephyr hated the nets in the Pit Jump. They get you all tangled up and it took forever to climb out of. There was a slight wind, so he had to watch for that when jumping. Now, onto what he had to jump onto. He eyes the small pillars with distrust, estimating the distance between him and it. He can't gather too much momentum, or he will skid over the edge on the other side. Tricky.
Making a few measurement in his head, he backed up from the ledge and prepared a leap. Careful now. He lined himself up, making sure he wasn't even slightly off course or else he'll jump into thin air. Seeing how the pillars are aligned, he decided to do them all in succession to avoid losing his momentum. It'll be hard to get any momentum at all on those small platforms.
Starting his run, he reached his top speed just as he attempted the jump, soaring over the nets, eyes focused on the pillars in front of him. As he landed, his back legs caught on the edge and he tripped, falling onto his belly. He managed to avoid falling off, but there goes his momentum. Coiling up like a spring, Zephyr was as far back on the pillar as he could. Suddenly, he sprang forward, gaining a little speed before leaping towards the next pillar.
Wind passed through his fur, whipping them back and forth before Eclipse started descending, grabbing onto the edge of the next pillar just before he fell. Struggling for a moment, he managed to pull himself up and onto the platform, safe if not tired.
The remaining pillars proceeded like this, though one harsh wing almost blew Zephyr off just as he landed on the last pillar. With great effort, he made the final leap to the opposite end of the canyon. Zephyr felt very proud of himself. The Obstacle course had been much harder based on what Eclipse had told him. Then he looked at the path that lead to the bottom of the canyon. Time for the hardest task in this whole race- The Pillar weave.

Pillar Weave

---
Zephyr followed the Path down the edge of the river running through the canyon. Looking upwards, he can see the pillars he had traversed so easily tower above him. Rowan had explained that canyons were made by rivers that bore ever deeper into the rock they run through. As the water rushed past, it carried little bits of rock and sand with it. Though it is little, over thousands of years it does make a difference.
Walking to the edge of the water, Zephyr once again examined what he had to work with. There were two ledges, one on the side of the river he was on, two on the other side. The ones on the near side were too far to jump to directly, but he could see that it was set up to be very tricky indeed. He needed to jump across the river, to the opposite ledge, jump back to the next ledge, and repeat. Sound easy enough right?
Well why do you think this is called the Pillar weave? Though the Jump is nothing more challenging then the ones he had already been faced with, he had to jump this one while avoiding going splat against the pillars he had jumped across. Eclipse had difficulty on this one too, having tried three times before he crossed safely.
Carefully backing up, Zephyr lined himself up for the jump. When he decided he had enough distance between him and the edge of the water, he sprinted, though maybe a bit slower then when he had first began the course. He was exhausted. As he soared across the water, he focused on the ledge we was going to land on. His front paws touched first and he took a few steps to absorb all the momentum. Then looking at the next ledge, Zephyr lined himself up, careful of the pillars.
This time when he jumped, one of his hind legs sent him on a slight angle...straight at the pillar to his right. In mid air, Zephyr instinctively curled himself up, changing his flight dramatically as his center gravity changed. He plummeted into the water below. As he fought the current, he noticed that it wasn't as strong as the one back at the River crossing, and he had no problem dragging himself back onto the shore of whence he started this obstacle. Darn it, now he has to do that all over again. But at least he didn't hit the pillar, that would have hurt.
The others were right- this one was hard. Really hard. How on earth did Eclipse manage it with Rowan on his back?
Hit the ledges straight on. Any odd angles can cause you to land and fall right off. Came Eclipse's advice. Zephyr growled in annoyance, he had done ok with all the previous obstacles -well, the first one was a fluke. He should be able to master this one no problem.

Pillar Weave (2nd try)
3, 8, x
---
Zephyr shook himself dry, something he saw as being very important. Being weighed down by water is not the best idea when you're trying to jump very high and far. His Rescue kit seemed to stay dry almost as if by magic. Or it could have been waterproofed because of the nature of these obstacles. He was pretty sure it was the latter. Walking back to the water's edge again, he surveyed it with narrow eyes before stepping back and facing the next ledge.
Like Eclipse suggested, he ran at the ledge straight on, trying to keep as much of an angle out as possible. Charging, he reached full speed and flew over the water, landing without much difficulty just like last time. Turning around, Zephyr carefully looked at the next jump before lining him up with it.
But that didn't mean he was ready to jump. He crouched down, every muscle in his body tense as he scanned the ground in front of him, making sure there was nothing that would mess up his run. When he was sure there weren't any, he took a deep breath and jumped.
An eagle cried somewhere overhead, but Zephyr did not turn his head to look at it. He came perilously close to the pillar to his right again, missing it by a hair's breadth before he tumbled onto the ledge on the other side. His damp fur was starting to become filled with dirt as it clung to the water present. Zephyr did his best to shake the debris off, especially off the silver part of his fur. Just as Rosemary's white feathered wings were her pride and joy, Zephyr's silver fur was his. He didn't know why, but the silver felt oddly comforting, as if a link to something familiar but forgotten...
Ah, I'm rambling. You probably want to know how he got past the Pillar weave right?
For the next Ledge, Eclipse almost missed, but dug into the edge with one paw, claws extended. Though he wasn't in a position where he could pull himself up, Zeph was smarter then that. Calling upon his earth magic, rock jutted out from the ledge and provided footing for him. That gave him a easy leap up to the next ledge.
Turning around to face the side of the Canyon that he had originally started the race, Zephyr searched for the last ledge. It was a bit to the right, no harder then the other three he has had to traverse. The ledge seemed empty, but there was a hole in the wall. It marked the Tunnel Crawl. The Object from Obstacle number 4 in his mouth, Zephyr made a jump for the last ledge and towards his next challenge.

Tunnel Crawl

---
Zephyr was finally passed the Pillar weave, and now faced his second last obstacle: The Tunnel Crawl. Examining the hole in the wall, Zephyr was surprised to find out that he could barely fit! Grimacing, he got onto his belly and slowly inched forward.
It was pitch black and Zephyr opened his mouth, allowing the small glowing object he had found in Obstacle number 4 to illuminate the tunnel for him. It was a painfully confined space, with about only an inch of clearance above him. There was no telling of the tunnel would narrow anywhere and trap the Lunar.
Carefully making his way forward, Zephyr grimaced as he brushed soil off the ceiling, the debris entering his eyes. Lots of soil and dirt entered his mouth, as he had to keep it open so that the small glowing object could light the way for him. After a while, Zeph gave up and put a protective spell around him with his earth magic to prevent any small bits of dirt from getting to close to his face. Man was he glad now that it was mandatory for Edoc'sil members to learn earth magic. It's made his life so much easier in the obstacles.
Soon he found the tunnel getting smaller and smaller and he grunted in annoyance as he tried to force his shoulder forward. He managed to barely get past, scraping the skin beneath his fur. A metallic scent soon started to permeate the air and Zephyr grimaced- he was bleeding, though he couldn't tell how much.
Then came the harder part of getting his hips past the narrow section. No matter how he pushed or pulled, no matter how he growled and howled and gnashed his teeth, no matter how he clawed at the dirt around it, he couldn't get free. Thank whatever god up there for earth magic or Zephyr might have remained stuck. Using magic, Zephyr worked to widen the tunnel around him until he came free. Hurray for earth magic!
The tunnel began to widen after that, and Zephyr had no more difficulties past the fact that he had to crawl on his belly. How undignified. His eyes adjusted to the dark well, and with the help of the glowing stone, Zephyr made it out in one piece. Well, except that bleeding shoulder, but it wasn't his main concern right now.
When he finally exited the tunnel, he flexed his muscled -he felt unbearably contained back there- and looked around to get his bearings. He was at the bottom of a large pit, the first one he had jumped across today...

Climb the Pit!

Zephyr carefully analyzed his position. He was at the bottom of a very deep pit, and a few ledges running along the wall was suppose to be his way out. Up above, trees cast a shadow over the whole, and half of the sky was obstructed by a net, which was partly damaged from Zephyr's claw and fangs.
The first ledge was low enough and he pulled himself up without much difficulty.
Don't be afraid to fall, the ground is very soft. It's some sort of moss. Came Rowan's voice and Zeph was surprised to hear it. He had been out of contact range since the Stone Hop, so it had been natural for him to forget he was within range of their bond here.
Ok, thanks. Zephyr replied. He was exhausted and the finish line was so close! Just a few more ledges to traverse now...just a few few more. If this had been at the beginning of the race, Zephyr realized, most of the Lunars would have gotten out within seconds. But after Fighting water currents, soaring through the skies, forced to jump long distances-- it was no wonder Eclipse had trouble with this obstacle.
Zephyr -his head not very clear from exhaustion- leaped towards the next ledge and found that it was not difficult. The next few ledges were fairly close together too and he soon grew confident. On the fifth ledge, Zephyr looked around with confusion- where was the next ledge? Then he saw it, about 3 meters away. He really wasn't in much of a mood to make a big jump right now...
As he pushed off with his hind legs, he knew even before he missed the ledge that he was going to fall. He landed on all four feet, nothing damaged though he is weary. Rowan had been right- the ground feels like a deep bed of moss.
Focus. Zeph growled to himself, heading towards the ledges again.

Climb the Pit! (2nd try)

---
Zephyr tiredly crawled onto the first ledge again, making himself focus. He made the first five jumps with ease again, and watched the next ledge carefully, analyzing it as he had with his other obstacles. He can't afford to be lazy now, not when the end is so near!
Growling to remind himself of his proud blood, Zephyr jumped as hard as he could. At first he though he wasn't going to make it, his vision was blurring. But when his foot touched solid ground, he knew that he had made it. but why was his vision failing? Looking at his shoulder with detachment, he realized that the red on his fur was not natural.
Ugh. Blood. He had forced himself too hard in the Tunnel crawl. But it didn't bother him too much, he's sees plenty of blood on his prey...just never on himself. The rest of the jumps were easy enough, though the last one was a bit of a challenge. He had almost missed and grabbed on with his front paws, and teeth, dragging himself up with tooth and claw. He wondered how Eclipse managed while carrying Rowan.
Standing up, finally freed of rock, Zephyr blinked wearily before remembering that he was being timed. Though he wanted nothing more then to rest, he pushed himself to run the last bit. Though he was tired, his speed was undiminished. Just like Eclipse and Rowan, Zephyr collapsed the moment he passed the finish line.
Edoc'sil gathered around him.
"That was a good time Zephyr, good work." Rowan said warmly, a friendly smile on her face.
Th-thanks.Zephyr murmured, then closed his eyes. He was happily aware of Rowan stroking her fur while they talked, then her hand passed over his shoulder and she jumped. Zephyr opened his eyes and said:
Woops, forgot to tell you. I scraped it while trying to get through the tunnel. It's not bad, though some dirt might have gotten in it. He soon fell asleep as Rowan worked to bandage him up. He was too tired to complain about a piece of man-made cloth obscuring his fur.
