Collected Definitions of Therianthropy

velveet-wings definition of "Therianthropy".
Quote:
The term therianthropy comes from the Greek therion meaning "wild animal" and anthropos meaning "man". Basically it refers to an 'animal person', someone who is both a human and a non-human animal. Depictions of such creatures can be found in mythology, legends and folk law, woven into history. While many of these depictions refer to human-like creatures with physical animal attributes (such as the ever popular werewolf, shape shifters or the Gods of Egyptian mythology) this is not the form I am referring to.

Therianthropy is, if you will, a 'condition' shared by many people from all over the globe and from many different walks of life. It is the belief that a core and integral part of yourself is a non-human animal. This belief is based upon many different experiences and feelings shared by therians. Though therianthropy is a very personal thing, and while there are certain core aspects we have in common, the experiences and beliefs behind therianthropy are often specific to the individual.

Definition stated from another source.
Quote:
Therianthrope: therion (greek for "beast) + anthropos ("human being", "man"). Do not confuse "anthropos" with "andros", which means "man" in the sense of "male" in opposition to "woman".

Therianthropy is a constant state of being and way of perceveing/experiencing the world that leads a person to feel and believe they are partially or completely animal inside (in a mental and/or spiritual way). You can't get rid of it and you can't choose it (in the same way you can't choose or get rid of your sexual preferences, the color of your skin, and such as). Most of the definitions you will find about therianthropy describe it as a spiritual concept or a belief, because most of therianthropes see it as spiritual, so don't be surprised if you read many definitions starting with "therianthropy is a belief that...". But again, therianthropy doesn't have to be spiritual.

Therianthropy isn't about having a totem. A totem/guide is a distinct entity, which means it is not necessarily the same specie as someone's animal side (theriotype). You can talk to a spirit guide, they can come and disappear as they want. However, you can't get rid of your theriotype. Also, therianthropy shouldn't be confused with a connection. The word "connection" is used very loosely to refers to a bond with an animal or a category of animals. However, therianthropy is more than being connected to an animal; it is being the animal inside. A connection could be totally unrelated to someone's theriotype. As an example, a wolf therian could feel a connection to tigers or felines in general, and perhaps experience a sense of felinity without having a feline theriotype.

While many therians experience shifts, this is not at all a rule. A shift is described as a mental change into the traits of the therian's theriotype. It can be sudden and chaotic, or it can just be subtle fluctuations between humanity and animality. There are many different kinds of shifts (such as mental shifts, where one's human mindset change to his animal sides's mindest, or phantom shifts, where a therian begins to feel non-existent physical traits such as animal ears or tail). However I am not going to list them; you will find various websites such as the Werelist or Shifters.Org listing various definitions in their encyclopedias, if you want to know more. By the way, non-therians can experience shifts as well; shamans and other people are able to shift into the mindset of another animal, this is what shapeshifting is about.

Therianthropy isn't about surhuman abilities. Being a therianthrope does not make us special, nor it gives us magickal powers or psychic talents. It is not a gift nor a curse and it doesn't make us changing into blood thirsty beasts at night. It is not a cult, and it's not something that can be taught; you can't become a therian. And, above all, therianthropy is not a game. It is not role-playing: we are animal inside, and we are real. Therianthropy doesn't make us cool or smart, it's simply about experiencing things in a different manner, which isn't better than any other.

In fact, each therianthrope experiences therianthropy in his/her own way. There are many different types of therianthropes. Some shift, some don't (contherianthrope are weres whose animal side is constantly blended with their human side, and therefore they cannot shift from a side to the other). Some have multiple sides (polyweres), some are a mix of different species (hybrids). Some wear no labels.

So what is Therianthropy, it is where the human feels an animal side to himself. This is not the same though as for instance Animal Spirit Guides or Lycanthropy. The therian generally doesn't claims to physicaly shift the "lycan" though will claim such capabilities.

The therian feels and sometimes acts like it's theriotype ( phenotype is a word also used but less usefull ), the animal side as some would say. For the therian the animal side is always there, though many people have worked with animal spirits, animal guides or animal souls, the therian is partly the animal. And that has mayor influence.

Think about it as that the shaman can call up the animal and speak with it, lending power temporal from the animal spirit. The therian though being the animal always is influenced by the animal side

A self-essay by me, though written back in '05.

http://velvetwings.net/
My personal website, has a brief introduction to the concept of therianthropy, along with an explanation of all the terms (which are useful to know when reading about therianthropy ). A few personal essays also, though not much because it's not finished.

The personal site of an online friend of mine (to navigate click the pictures at the bottom).

http://liesk.feralscribes.org/
The personal site of someone I met through various therianthropy forums.

http://www.therianthropy.org/forums/
Some very good discussions and theories can be found there, though it is a large forum so digging is required. Also I believe you have to register to view the forums. It is farily quiet there right now though if you have any questions about therianthropy that is a good place to ask them, as you will get a variety of answers.

http://www.werelist.com/
Similar to the forums above, though some of the people there are a little less credible in my oppinion, but still a wonderful site with some interesting people.

I've heard of it before, and being that it's a personal belief and I have no way of changing it, I really don't care. I don't mind therianthropes.

But it's based in the idea of 'soul', a completely unprovable concept. Whereas, for example, transexuality can be explained by Gender Disphoria, a disorder caused by an intricate difference of neurochemistry and physiological brain structure. There is no legitimate cause or explaination for therianthropy.

That said, it's about as viable as any other unproven belief- I just find it amusing that all therianthropes I've met (roughly fifteen or twenty, nowhere near the overall majority) all have really cool animal elements. I've never met a mole or a proboscus monkey- it's always a wolf, or a panther, or something at least cute, if not incredibly amazing. Leads me to wonder why I've never met anyone who believed that they have the soul of a pangolin or something. Or a three-toed sloth.

Interesting...I've never met one before, however, it's my plague to have people constantly refer to and treat me as if I'm a kitten or a puppy for some reason. sweatdrop I'd have it checked out, but I’m pretty sure it's just because I'm short...

I think it works out like...Ex: "I have a male body witha woman's soul." (not me ^^; ) It's basically that only animal wise. of course this is only an assumption.

I'd thought I was a therianthrope for awhile in my early 20s. I had a werecard and everything. Then I realised I had no soul, and walked away from the concept.

Turns out I was just really obsessed with tigers, bears and ravens. I still am. A lot of people around me are convinced I'm a bear most days - especially in the winter. I personally wish I had more catlike attributes, but you get what you get. xd

Well, something i've done a few times is work out what animal people are closest to, and after a bit of thought, pretty much everyone is similar to some animal in some way, so in that way, maybe everyone is a therianthrope.

It's an interesting concept, but personally, i don't believe that humans are in any way naturally removed from beasts, except for what we have done by moving out of the wild and killing nature where we move to. So in that respect, i see everyone (or almost everyone) as, i suppose you could say therianthropic.

[DISCLAIMER: Since therianthropy and 'kin get in each other like peanut butter and chocolate, I feel the need to discuss both.]

The problem that occasionally arises with therianthropy (especially the more restrictive definition of one who believes that he or she, in some way, is a particular non-human animal) is its rather anemic theology. I can understand the therians/Otherkin who believe themselves to be "walk-ins", but those who argue that their soul is "misimprinted", for example, bug me.

The theological issue arises most when the therian/'kin theology is applied in a syncretic manner to an existing theology (a Christian therian or 'kin should be asking themselves why they believe in an omnipotent deity that gave them the wrong soul, especially since Christianity does not believe in reincarnation in any form), or by stealing the "public face" of another religion - such as those who claim support from various Native American traditions without an understanding of those traditions seemingly beyond "they like animals, so do I". The term "shaman" is often misapplied to Native American traditions to bolster the argument - again, often with a fundamental misunderstanding of the Siberian Shaman, and the Native medicine man.

There's also a rather fuzzy dividing line between what makes one an "accepted" therian or 'kin - some therian groups do not allow for non-existent animals (no Unicorn therians, for example), while some allow for anything as long as it's not human; on the other side of the coin are the 'Kin who do not allow for terrestrial animals (no wolves, eagles, beetles, ferrets), or even the "old school purists" who claim that only elves, vampires, or other humanoid non-humans qualify one as 'Kin. Since both the therian and 'kin concepts are decentralized, with no real central authority on what makes one be/not be a member of these groups, the terms are often as meaningless as "pagan" beyond a badge of self-declaration.

I'm still a bit confused in the areas of it feeling as if another animal is inside you, or if many to all of you thoughts an actions mimic those of a cetain animal, or even to feel as the "spirit" of certain animal is in your body within your own [spirit]

I believe one of my possible past lives was that of a dog.

Note, when I stick my head out of the window of a moving car, my foot moves, much like the wagging tail of a happy dog.

But I don't usually act like a dog and wouldn't consider myself a therian.

Just thought I'd toss in my two cents.
