Another opinion thread.

While people seem to really really like the animation and drawings in say, First Contact alot, so do I.. But I have to say, I really like the old stuff better. (Mamo, Byebye Liberty, etc.)

The characters in the newer ones are smoother, but the roughness fits Lupin in my opinion, and can also express goofiness better. The backgrounds are more detailed looking, and also (although maybe I just notice it more with them), the new ones seem to have worse animation, as in the actual movement. Although I already knew Japan wasn't as advanced with animation as some other countries.

[Which brings me to another thing, just a quick insert. The animation in Japanese animation usually is kind of eh. However, when a Japanese company animates a show for another country, it turns out differently (Animaniacs is done by a Japanese animation company, although I haven't look into it, so maybe they only color it, no idea), but lots cartoons go with Asian companies for animation, of course Japan being one of those countries in Asia...]

Maybe it's just people's constant whining/raving that made me appreciate the older stuff more (Like how nobody wants to give Lupin a chance cause it doesn't look like Naruto.. Well, I don't like that drawing style, but if it was good, I would watch it.. meanies... And people also rave constantly about the computer done stuff, so..), or maybe it's just to my tastes (With all I've gotten from my mom, I might as well have been a 70's child anyway.. I'm really really glad I'm not though xP)... But, that's my opinion. Now share yours..

The older animation style works for the goofiness, I agree. But, if First Contact was done in that style, it wouldn't really work, as it was a serious-like special. At least to me it wouldn't. Although Operation: Return the Treasure was pretty goofy and the animation style didn't do anything to hinder it's awesomeness. Although the colors also work into that, too. And whether it's day or night.

I like both styles. And sometimes for me (very rarely) I like something for the way it looks. Like Twilight Gemini, the big plus on that movie for me was the style it was drawn in and the way everything looked. But usually I look at story and the depth of the characters and such.

A lot of animating and stuff, from what I have seen in credits, is done in South Korea. At least all the names seem to be Korean.

Yeah.. I forgot my favorite thing about the older stuff though, the legs&arms xd It's weird and very.. Lupin xp

I don't know, it's hard to imagine First Contact in any other style, since I've only seen it in that style. I don't think the older style would have been bad for it, though. I just don't think you should try to have too much realism to Lupin, like Tokyo Crisis where Jigen and Goemon were completely useless, as Jigen had a toothache and Goemon lost his sword.. Their personalities in general were annoying in that movie, anyway...

The newer stuff looks smoother, which is a plus to fans who expect that i assume, but knowing everything was hand-done gives it a quality that can't be 'manufactured'.
This reminds me of a disscussion I had with my mom a few days ago.
They had a showing of Spider-Man 2 at my church, and afterwards one of my friends said he thought the train fight scene was one of the best fight scenes on film. Which struck my mom and myself as odd, since the bulk of the scene was computer generated.
It looked nice, but it wasn't real.
Much in that same way that computer stuff looks nice, but again, it wasn't made by human hands. When you look at something and it was created frame by frame, it's all the more impressive.

Actually, when I first started watching Lupin, I never paid attention to animation, I never noticed it. Once I really started watching it, I thought, "Sure, you can see it isn't perfect, but look at the detail they went to! By hand!"

I love the details in the second series. You can pause newspapers and zoom in and read Engrish headlines.

First contact was good because I didn't really notice if it was on the computer or not. I just watched Angel Tactics (2005 special, I believe) and besides having a so-so plot, it screamed 'computer!' to high heaven. They had these weird light efects and silhouettes that did not look like Lupin at all.
(Pics: Angel Tactics)
Also, when you get into the computer, everyone starts lokoing more shiny and Lupin does all these odd twists that shouldn't be there.
I mean, he is a monkey man, but don't have him do a double backfilp with a half twist in mid air while pulling out his gun, and shoot the guy while doing a pirouette. Well, that's how it seems, anyway.

Says the album is private. sweatdrop

The computer animated Spider-Man looks odd. They did a great job with it, but yeah, everything is just so smooth, like the movements flow too easily and such. Still a great scene, though, I think. Not the greatest ever, but it's good.

I'm not a big fan of computer done animated stuff, either. I remember when that was the thing to do and a lot of the Saturday morning shows were that way. It hurt my eyes to watch them. And I spent hours ranting to my mom about it. And she could have cared less. xd

*pictures crazy gymnist Lupin* xD

Piru: Yeah, I enjoyed Tokyo Crisis, but having Jigen and Goemon in it was a complete waste, I agree. And Fujiko kind of had an odd role as well. I mean, if they have to have all the characters in a movie, make them do something worth while.

I like it in the second series when they have them running. It's very odd looking. I guess it was the same for the other two series, but I don't remember much about them.

Yeah, I saw Angel Tactics recently. I didn't like it much(the specials almost always start out decently, and by the end suck), but.. The drawings were decent, but it did scream computer. The hand done stuff just looks more detailed to me (alot of anime fans whine about older stuff not being as detailed, but I think the opposite), and impressive. The computer done stuff is just "So what?" to me xP

Twonk- That's one of the things I liked about Return the Treasure. It wasn't great, but every character had a part that wasn't useless, especially Fujiko, who they too often forget has some brains.

I haven't seen any of the Spider-Man movies except for part of the first.

To me, the stuff with all the computer animated crap (live action here) looks MORE cheesy then the older stuff. I'm sure with technology, they could do stuff on the computer that looks more realistic, right? But I haven't seen any decent looking computer stuff yet..

I thought I took care of the album being private...It worked for me when I was logged out last time. xp

Anyway, the guest password is Lupin. Original, huh?
It's in the Lupin subalbum, in a sub album all it's own...It's not too hard to find. Just alot of my random pictures.

Computer animation has the power to look good, I liked Ghost in the Shell: SAC and Appleseed, but it's not really used correctly.
Most of the time, it just looks really out of place, or too smooth. And boring.

Though, I did like how the used in in The Big O season 2. They animated it all in computer, but kept the exact same look of cels. I didn't know it was computer animated until I was looking for some cels on Ebay.
It was nice they kept the hand-drawn look.

Now I know why I wasn't able to watch the second season of Big O. xd Because I watched two episodes and something about it bugged the crap out of me and I stopped watching it.

I love in movies when they duplicate a small crowd to make it look like a huge one, like for battle scenes and stuff, and you can freze it and count how many guys there are with orange shields or whatever.

A lot of computer stuff looks really good, but most of it is when they recreate ancient cities or create new ones. Computer animated characters still need a lot of work. They're getting there, though. But most of the time the movies or the series that look really good, computer-wise, have crappy story lines or story lines so confusing you get bored with it.

I agree xp

I never watched much Big O, so I can't really say for that, but I agree with the rest. I still think hand-done scenery look more detailed, though xd

P.S. Nice guest password, Nani xp

I see saw a bit on which movies I think look better then others. I think about my favorite in how everyone looks is Nostradamus. I'm sort of annoyed with Dead or Alive, style wise. Mamo has the good ol' classic television feel as well as Cagliostro from the Miyazaki days.
