early to mid 1800s? Hell no, way too late. Since AWE is all about the end of the age of piracy, it's probably like 1720's or so.

There's many indicators that POTC is set in the 1700s...
The weapons The boats The outfits of the British soldiers

Since every pirate lord in the movie is VERY loosely based on a real pirate from the 1700s I'd have to say 1700s pirate Captain Jack Sparrow even flys Calico Jack Rackham's flag.

actually pirates BEGAN to come out about 75 years after columbus first came to america, i guess they thought it was a good way to make money with more people out at sea but they hit their peak in the late 1500's i beleive.
