I honestly had no idea the teaching of evolution was so bad in the US.
Granted this map is from 2002, and I would hope that things have changed since then, but... >.<

That's interesting. I'm from NC and honestly, I got a really crappy biology lesson. Then again, half of it is because I tuned it out. The other half is because it did a horrible job explaining what natural selection actually was and how the process actually worked. After encountering it again and understanding it, I realize how much sense it actually makes. My high school biology textbook made it seem like things just randomly started changing in massive amounts, which isn't necessarily true. More accurately, it wasn't quite like my biology textbook made it seem.

When I was a little boy, because my parents aren't Christian, on Sundays I would go to boot fairs and jumble sales instead of church, and by old science books to read. I had a solid understanding of prehistory by the time I was eight. I wish all children would have the chance to subject themselves to science like I did when they are young.

I wish all kids understood communication as well as I did when I was eight. Then again, that's a bit unrealistic to wish for (since my life's situation is not the normal one). I do wish kids in America understood science better. I wish Christians understood how science relates to faith better.

Same here Berezi...

And I was luckily in the gifted biology, so even if I was in Florida, it was definitely a higher standard.

Yeah, see, the bad part is I was in the honors biology class. I aced that sucker with practically a 100.

Of course, half of the reason it was so bad was because I was fearful of evolution at the time and shut out any information I could have. It was cowardly of me and something I regret. Luckily I'm an anthropology major and have a clear grasp of what it is now. =)

We don't hold it against you. Someone made you afraid of learning about evolution; even though it's their fault, someone made them feel that that was appropriate, and so on. We want to break the chain.

=P Of course, after hanging around a bit with you guys, I realize that you guys are doing the best you can to break the chain.

Perhaps you recognize the name, perhaps you don't, but this isn't the first time we've encountered each other. While my debates with you and various others about this subject helped, they weren't the clincher.

I knew intellectually there was a problem after debating with you guys, but the fear was huge. That was taken care of through another venue. If it's at all possible to alter your approach to address the fear bit, then do so. If not, that's okay.

But at the very least, refrain from being hostile towards creationists. I know it's frustrating, but don't do it. I promise you that the hostility I did encounter made me apprehensive and only did damage to your cause.

Glad to hear it. In other news I conducted a debate today and found out that over half of my honors english class is pro creationism and 1/4th believe it or ID should be taught in schools as fact.

How do you tell creationists not to be afraid without sounding condascending?

... *blinks*

Well, I'm from Mississippi, but I was always in advanced and gifted classes, so we actually learned about evolution.

Same except I'm from Florida...and while researching the subject of evolution for my debate I found out my view is semi deist in that I believe God created the universe, and the natural laws that govern it. Then incepted the first life but allowed everything to take it's course after that. Natural Selection for the win.

I don't know how you could possibly tell someone not to be afraid of something without patronizing them. Then again, when I do that, it's usually in person. There's a completely different set of rules then.

The only way I seem to get people to actually listen to the fact there's nothing to be fearful of is to be blunt and not use terminology they're unfamiliar with... sadly that still doesn't work

Evolution, though not in depth, has always been in our Australian school agenda. And in high school science there is always a full topic on it. It is also different here in the case that religion is not compulsory in any government school nor is it found very much in high schools.
