I remember back when I didn't have someone to call my own, one of the reasons I was so passionate about moving to Japan, was to find a nice girl to love and cherish, and shower with my affection. Keep in mind that to this day, I have yet to go on an honest to goodness date. Although much time has passed, and I've found someone to call my beloved right here in the good ol' US and A(<-utterly outdated pop culture reference), I still have some desire to practice the smooth talking Japanese I picked up on her. Perhaps in passing, as a way to tease her about something... ninja
Moving on, though, I've always been curious, as to what the dating atmosphere in Japan is like, and how many people have tried to pick up the language, to pick up on other people. What do you all think of dating in Japan, and have you learned anything you'd like to use, to maybe land someone in the land of the rising sun?

I find it interesting. Learning a language just to try and find a date/boyfriend/girlfriend, I mean... sweatdrop I guess it's my own mentality, but I think you should date someone based on their personality not just his/her race/ethnicity. I would consider that a bit shallow.

I would consider that a bit shallow. Well not just to find a boy/girlfriend(who'd be that shallow?), but if you're going to be in the country, you might as well give it a shot, right? Besides, if someone were to try and pick up on you, wouldn't you want to say something else, besides, 'Hai, wakarimashita.'?

I know a few who would be that shallow... stare If you're going to a country that speaks a different language it is good to learn a least a few phrases so that you can get by if needed.
I did have one guy who liked me in Japan...but it was sort of odd because he was trying to speak Chinese to me because I said knew a bit of it. It also got confusing because he would switch mid-sentence from Japanese to Chinese and I couldn't keep track... sweatdrop I didn't go over there to find a boyfriend though. I went over to immerse myself in the cultural experience. It was a lot of fun!

I'm quite sure some japanese people take dating casually =O Japanese people [that I know] will not hesitate to send chocolates to the people they like at school. Usually they even try to talk to them [despite their unforgiving shy personality] And confess o_________o But I guess long-term marriage is serious ><

The boys are sooo shy, oh my gosh and the girls don't seem to be all that shy, though I must say I don't know many Japanese girls (I mean I don't know them well enough to have talked with them about dating and stuff).. Also, girls seem to like dating foreigners even if they don't speak English and the foreigners don't speak Japanese..And from what I've seen that brings a lot of white guys to Japan lol.. Even the ones that aren't exactly whats considered attractive in the West walk around Tokyo with a super pretty Japanese girl clinging onto their arm... oddness xD

Oh poor me. XD I didn't consider that at all~. I am too humble and shy about myself in that way, I didn't even think about learning pick-up lines. XD;;;; I mean, not like I would use them, but just to know what one is... Although I don't even know what they are in English DX * is a very clueless girl * I don't know the subtle flirting techniques some people use but if it is obvious enough I just freeze and blush to death. gonk

This is an interesting topic in the fact that it got me curious in the divorce rate in Japan. I would have never thought to check otherwise.
This is just some of the major countrys this is base on per 1000 couples a year. They are different depending on what reference you use. I guess mostly due to different years the study comes from. As you can see below the Japanese has about have that of America which seems to have the most.
Japan: 2.2 USA:4.0 Germany: 2.4 France: 1.9 UK: 2.6 Sweden: 2.4
I decided to show some of the lowest so here they are. I was surprised about Italy and Mexico.
Sri Lanka 0.15 Brazil 0.26 Italy 0.27 Mexico 0.33

For some unknown reason, I thought the US would be higher than that. I'm actually surprised that Japan is that high. I would have figured they'd be about 1.5, but they are becoming more Westernized I suppose. sweatdrop

I think it's natural to have an attraction to a particular nationality, I mean after all, that's partially why we study a foreign language, right? I just think if you ONLY want to go out with someone of a particular nationality then you are closing your mind and your heart to some wonderful possibilities. There are a LOT of great ladies out there =P

Fenz, You are right about the Japanese girl and American guy, thing. I can't get women in this country to give me the time of day, but I have or have had MANY beautiful, cool Japanese girls wanting to meet or date me. I think I need to move to Japan!

Now what is extremely confusing is the Japanese homosexual dating scene. xD Try finding a Gay date in Japan, jeez. >< Bright side, I can turn down girls coming on to me, =D but thats about it lol. Damn Japanese classes, never prepare you for real life scenarios.
