:: A Quest for the Maori Kite :: Fly away from me, my bird, glance restlessly as you dart about on high; swoon down like the bush hawk in search of its prey. Fly ever higher, beautiful bird, soar beyond the clouds and over the trough of the sea, onward to Caropus, onward to Antares, speed to the clouds like a warrior about to do battle, onward... Greetings and welcome to my quest thread for the spirit of the Maori Kite, Paikea. I hope you will enjoy the spirit explained within this thread's posts as I attempt to shift through a most likely endless plot thought process. Any criticism would be greatly appreciated. Just post and let me know what you think. Thank you.

:: Manuaute - A Maori Kite :: Maori kites are typically made in the form of a bird. This is to embody the beliefe that birds were the communicators between humans and the spirit world. It was thought that the soul or spirit of a person was in the form of a bird so that the kite became an extension of its owner by which means the kite flyer contacted the spirit world.
The maori kite was known under several names, and probably each name described some special variety, differing from others in size, shape, or material of which it was made. Thus there is the manu or bird, the kaahu or hawk, the paakau or wing, and the manuwhara or kite of the canoe sail. Still, the term manuaute seems to have been retained as a general name, and might be used loosely for any variety.
It appears to have been customary both in New Zealand and throughout Polynesia for the kite-flyer to chant a kind of song as the kite went up. These songs were a variety of karakia called turu manu, or kite charm, and were believed to make the kite fly properly. A number of these have been preserved. They are often full of poetic fancy; but the archaic language in which they are composed, while denoting their great antiquity, makes them extremely difficult of translation.

:: Paikea :: Name: Paikea (Pie Key ah) Ava Imogen Lavire Spirit: Maori Kite Gender: female
:: Eyes: Dark red/brown in color.
:: Skin: it used to be a healthy peach color, but now it looks tanned and washed out from spending so much time in the sun. A weather beaten wood color.
:: Hair: Dark brown in color and doesn’t fall below her earlobes. The spindle like curls almost fan out, like a mane. The most interesting aspect would be the thin white, and almost transparent, braid at the nape of her neck. This braid is fairly long and the patch of flesh it is attached to is completely numb. Anyone can latch onto this part of hair, effectively holding her back and she would never notice.
:: Stature: Very thin, light and small. This helps with gliding abilities.
:: Markings: She has a few Maori markings scattered about her body, the only one visible would be the marking on her forehead, an intricate arrow head pointing down her forehead. The others are about her shoulders (back) and ankles. -x the top image on the right
:: Wings: I have two options really. And I can see her with both but I prefer number 2. Either way, she has no control over them.
1. Plain and simple, Paikea has wings of a maori kite, large rounded woven wings (as seen here). 2. Paikea doesn’t have wings in the beginning… She has the framework for the Maori Kite wings. Over time she can weave in substance between the frameworks. (Would be a wooden like structure)
Also, similar to a butterfly with it’s top big wing and two more elegant, tail wings; Paikea has something similar. The feet of the Maori kite are elongated so that ( I don’t know another way to explain it…) two almost lion tails come out the middle of her back (attached to where flesh and framework meet)
:: Kite Appearance :: - String :: braided non-opaque white hair at the base of her neck. - Wings :: the Maori kite framework wings on her back - Tale of the kite :: the two leather ropes mimicking lion tails right beneath the framework
Dress: Paikea can mostly be seen in clothing that is loose and overly simple. Skirts, tee shirts, but nothing too revealing. Her wardrobe is mainly aimed for summer, consisting of tee-shirts, skirts, shorts, capris and the occasional wide-strapped tanktop. Her feet must always be bare or else she'll feel to captured, but if she must be wearing something on her feet, she'd opt for sandals opposed to fully closed shoes. Although at times when she's feeling extra ceremonial, traditional beaded outfits are her deal. She loves dressing in these dancing garbs. (links below) However, when she is not wearing the beaded dress (although she opts to wear the top underneath whatever shirt she is wearing for moral comfort) she can most likely be seen with a black, white and red beaded headband crowning her head.
Garb links: :: Necklace pendant x :: Beaded head band/shirt x :: Satchel x :: Beaded skirt x
Personality: Paikea is a free flowing spirit tending to go wherever the wind takes her. She is brave and strong and isn't afraid to show it. She wants to be known as a powerful warrior, someone who can help others and pull her weight. She's always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need, allowing herself to be comfortable with anyone. But, like the kite and the wind, she can often find herself being a little bit far too trusting, opting to give people the benefit of the doubt and forcing herself not to be judgmental.
Paikea is not afraid of commitment, for once she has flung herself in the air, she won't come back down until she completes her task. Other than this she has a rather 'go with the flow' attitude on life.
Most of all Pai likes to see others smile and will go out of her way to do so.
Paikea is at her strongest when the winds are in full blast, such as right before a storm. I guess one could say that the winds are moderators of her mood in a sense. Quirks: Pai has a slight obsession with ceremonial chants/rhythm circles and will often times find herself starting one up. She loves to be a leader and a role model for others, hopefully never hurting anyone, but she can throw on a fiercer personality if it will help someone else to stop being hysterical. Paikea has a natural envy for birds that she can't seem to pinpoint as to why, and she has a major obsession with beaded things (natural beads, out of wood or bone or stone...etc.) bracelets and necklaces, anklets and ornaments. She collects mainly anklets and bracelets but choosing only to wear one necklace at a time.
Likes: Clouds, kites, beads, ceremonies, chants, songs, poems, writing, ideas of flight, breezes, the ocean, sand beneath her feet, aspects of warrior life, the time before a storm. Dislikes: Disappointing others, Ice, snow, forests, being stuck, days without winds, falling, birds.
Abilities: Few to none really. Her spiritual past brings her a fierce soul but as to special abilities? She might end up learning how to float, not fly per se, but glide up to a certain distance from the ground.
History: More to come...

YAY! Oooh~ luffle, I love this concept. The idea of a spirit of a kite is just so interesting, especially a kite so rooted in tradition. I'm really interested about where you're going to go with her history <3
Also....
"Paikea is a free flowing spirit tending to go wherever the wind takes her."
Abbey: -perks- reeeeaaaallllyyy? biggrin ?
