I buy vinyl, and I was trolling ebay for Lupin III vinyl (especially Punch the Monkey remixes, one of which, the third one, I bought in Los Angeles for a mere seven dollars). They used to go for maybe $25 at the most, but now all of them go up to the $50-$100 range, remixes and soundtracks alike. I realized that suddenly the show has become popular among electronic and hip-hop musicians. Then I thought about it -- what took them so long? I mean, especially among the hip-hop crowd, Lupin and the entire Lupin gang sort of exemplify the lifestyle lauded in popular rap lyrics. Lupin, Jigen and co. are essentially "gangstas," they enjoy luxury living and Lupin pursues beautiful women, often using his skills as a procurer of wealth as a way to go about it. However, only Kanye West has been keen enough to make a passing mention to the anime in one of his songs. I wonder when and if the hip-hop world will catch on -- I would certainly love to see urban fashion featuring Lupin, Fujiko, etc. I also wonder, if this were to become the case, would I go down to the local PhatKaps in the mall and buy a gigantic $300 jacket with Lupin embroidered on the back? What about y'all?

I have to say no, as I am not a big hip-hop fan and I think it would slightly turn me off Lupin. But, that's just me.
Lupin getting very popular is an odd subject for me, as I would like to see it get that way, but I don't want it to become another Inuyasha or Dragon Ball or Naruto. That would be a bad thing in my mind. Although it would be cool to have a choice of Lupin shirts to purchase.

I've never really thought about Lupin being 'gangsta', they do have certain qualities now that you mention it.
I don't think it will become hugely popular, since I think it's not completely geared for 'main stream'. I think it's a bit too dated for people to accept. At least, that's the impression I gather from anime conventions and such.
However, I wouldn't mind it becoming popular to have T-Shirts and such. I would love to be able to say, "Lupin", and not getting a blank scare.
And I might be crazy enough to buy the $300 dollar jacket, but it had better be one great jacket. wink

Ditto.. Uh, anyway.. I doubt it will get popular with any crowd, it's not publicized enough, plus the popular anime is Inuyasha, FMA, etc. People don't accept things like Lupin, because they're closed minded.

Shudiro sry to say but in my opinion Lupin the 3rd was made to be in the old school mainstream What did what you just said even mean? That it was created to be old? That doesn't even make sense.
And for you naysayers, Lupin III is popular with the hip hop crowd in Japan. I found a Japanese rap video that sampled the Lupin theme and featured Lupin characters on youtube. (I think the artist's name was SEAMO.)

Pirupi Yeah I've seen that before. From what I hear, Lupin's just popular in general in Japan, though. Voted 4th most popular anime in all Japan last year, behind Gundam and other unworhty things (not that I hate Gundam, just Lupin should be #1!) roothands Fat Albert, Scarface, The Godfather, etc. are all dated but they are widely popular with the hip-hop crowd. Fat Albert aside, Lupin doesn't have that much in common with the other things. Scareface is violent and about drugs, and The Godfather is violent and about the Mafia. While Lupin does fight against the Mafia, or drugs occasionally, it is much more lighthearted than the the other two. Fat Albert I've never seen, but it's mainly just goofy, isn't it? An anime that has elements of the last two movies, (violence, mafia, drugs), that is popular is Cowboy Bebop. That embodies what is popular much more than Lupin does. Not that I wouldn't want Lupin to be popular, I just don't see it happening with this particular crowd. As Pirupi said, though, it won't get popluar with any crowb unless it's publicized. It's had bad publicity from day one. xp

I'm not so sure I thought about it all that much in that way....I can't say that the fact that Jigen being an ex-mafia hitman wouldn't add to it, though, you also have the updated version in the way of the Cowboy Bebop...
I may be waaaay off base here, but I can say that that wasn't what caught my interest.
But then..that's just me. XD

Voted 4th most popular anime in all Japan last year, behind Gundam and other unworhty things (not that I hate Gundam, just Lupin should be #1!) The original Gundam, and even Zeta Gundam, are really good. I would consider them to be on par with Lupin, just that Lupin is more funny and episodic than Gundam, which follows a linear plot.
As for the common thread, why do you not see how Lupin is violent? Especially the first series. People shoot each other, people get killed, etc. Also Goemon uses sword martial arts techniques, always popular with the hip hop crowd. And need I remind everyone that Lupin is a gangster in the technical sense? Jigen, Lupin, and Goemon are in a gang. They work together as a team to break the law by stealing things. I think the whole idea of them being a "crew" is the main appeal here.
Also, there's more gunfighting in the movies and specials too.

Yeah, Lupin is violent, but not in that mafia Scarface type way. It's like, lighthearted violence, if there is such a thing. XD It's not like they say "You cheated me outta five bucks!" and then shoot whoever eight million times while grinning. It's like they are thinking "How many times can we shoot him until he stops twitching?"XP
Plus for me I find mafia movies very boring and although those and Lupin are predictable I enjoy Lupin a lot more. But then maybe the hip hop crowd will recognize it and give it some sort of publicity. 3nodding
Nani: Yeah, Fat Albert was goofy and every episode taught you some sort of life lesson. Watched that all the time early in elementary school. sweatdrop

In lupin, even in the first series, when people die, it's not too bad. It's not like a Lupin character, be it one of the main guys or a random henchman, ever shoot a guy more then three or four times. And even if they do more, there's hardly ever any blood.
