I don't remember the method, but it is actually easier to draw it in MSPaint. Gives practice to writting it ^_^.

If you have your XP disc, all you need to do is add another language on the language bar. It'll install the IME then, and you'll be able to type in Katakana/Hiragana/Kanji

Can someone please explain this to me? I mean, I'll have to find the XP CD here, but how does it work? You type the romaji like: Konnichi'wa and the Kanji will come out? Or does it work diffrent?

Sure!

To add japanese to your computer, have your win xp install disc handy. Go into your start button:settings:control panel and click on the "regional and language options" (globe icon).

On the 2nd tab, check the last checkbox that says "install files for east asian language."

Then select the "details" button to get into the language options. In the box bottom right hand side of the next window is a button that says "add..." Click that and select "Japanese" for input language. If it's not on the list, you might need to click ok and go back into the language settings again after they're installed.

Once the Japanese input language is installed, you are done! Now you should have an icon on your start bar that says "EN." You can switch to Japanese input by clicking on that icon and selecting "japanese" or by pressing "alt+shift" to switch between the languages.

Lastly! You need to switch the "input mode." This controls whether you are typing in hiragana or katakana. Input mode is usually a "A" icon next to the "J/EN" button on your start bar (you might need to slide the "J" icon over to see it).

Now you can begin typing in Japanese!!

Type out how the word is spelled in romaji... or how it's pronounced basically. then press "space" and a scrollbar will appear for you to select the proper kanji and hit enter to change the kana to kanji. Make sure to check your kanji against a dictionary or be prepared for humiliation!! ha ha... and it DOES give you the option to just type in kana (hit enter after typing instead of space).

Last tip... there is a "language" bar that is handy and puts the little "J/EN" IME icons into their own floating toolbar.

If anyone knows how to switch input mode with a keyboard shortcut, I'd CERTAINLY like to know how! I've done it on accident before, but can never figure out the right key combination to do it.

頑張ってね!

To get the key-stroke IME change, right click on the En/Jp box and hit settings. Click on the 'Key Settings' button, and set up the key options. I think [left-ALT]+[Shift] is the default option, but you can change it to what ever you need.

yes yes... switching from japanese to english is easy enough. But what'st he hot-keys to switch from hiragana to katakana?? I hate having to use the mouse to switch back and forth... primarily for words that have a kanji AND a romaji writing and different meanings for both. Or trying to type American names or words in katakana.

If you hold down shift when you type (jp mode) it will temporary imput halfwhith alphnumaeric (normal english, kinda) instead of what was selected (most likely hiragana) This is great if you dont want to switch imput modes just to type a web address (it uses all caps though!)

if you click the little "v" arrow thingy in the language bar it will give the option of settings. From there slect the IME and click properties. There you can set the default imput to hiragana, instead of alphanumeric, as well as other stuff. This is XPpro though, pro has a lot of nice language features home doesnt like a dictionary and hand riting analysis.
