What has long been rumour is very much fact now. Gaia is going to have a battle system, which only brings to mind neopets for some reason. While this may not seem like a relavent subject, a gaian battle system is going to dramatically effect the way RPs work. With an actually battle moderater, RPs can include fair fights between Gaians in a system, but without NPCs all the fights are restricted to being between actual Gaians. This is okay for the Gaian vs Gaian RPs where some are allowed to be bad guys, but the good to bad ratio is almost always in the good favour. Secondly, this system favours the "battledome RPs" which are pretty much just Gaians duplicating their favourite moves from their favourite animes regardless of plot, continuity and character development. I am trying to temper my negative view and what impact this will have on the amount off literary RPs available and be objective. So I invite all Rpers of this forum to give some input on what you think about it. I know most long time Gaians consider it a bad move influenced by the amount of 'newbs' but I want to hear what you have to say.

I am aware of many experienced Gaians who do not like the idea. I am not exactly sure why. I too appreciate the normal RP as we have it, but you make very good sense. I am still undecided on the matter, but I dont think it will impact RPs...or even Gaia that much. WHat I am scared of is encouragement of the battle arenas and a delcine in serious RPing...but that isnt a real threat....it'll just clear up barton a bit.

I personally think its a bad idea, and as of now I don't have much behind my reasoning except that in past forums I've been in, battle systems have dragged down the quality of RPing and of the forum in general. Even if someone is using Sue-ish super-characters, I'd much rather see people try to write and evolve their RPing rather than giving up as soon as an automated system can make the battles for them. Also, as Kai said, creativity would be limited, which urks me because I think creating powers and throwing creative and unpredictable twists into battles are quite fun and hard to recreate on battle systems.

Maybe I'll edit this once I get some sleep, but that's my confuddled thought on the matter. Having weapons as avatar accesories is great and all, but the battle system will take away from the cream of a role-playing community: writing.

That's what I mean: as soon as there is an easier opinion for playing out battles, people will flock to it. I know I could be like: "Hey, that's their problem if they don't want to be better writers," but it's not right to give up on people so easy. I would much prefer keeping the current, solely writing-RPing system that is at least semi-educational. The 'extra work' leads to better writers, which I would hope a role-playing community would want to foster.

As I said, my opinion is more of a personal peeve, it probably won't reduce Gaia to fire and brimstone like I'm worried it will. *tries to swat away the lingering ghost of Neopets*

indeed writing down your battle moves makes your character even moor characteristic, I would think it a good thing that you can choose to do or don't use the battle system when you make a new topic. I do think it would be nice to solve a argue in a fair fight. but not to use it as a role play. if you would be able to create thousands of different battle moves it would be ok to use it in a rp. but I don't se that happening.

I'd have to see it to determine whether or not to use it. I already have a stat system set up in my guild to make the outcome of battles fair. I've got nothing against it, I know at least I will still keep literate RPing.

Where are all of you peeps hearing about this? It's like, totally new to me. @___@
