The lunar new year is *finally* here! In our family, we have a tradition of leading up to the lunar new year with a series of unfortunate events (tm), so I'm pathetically glad to mentally cross off the old year as gone and done. We're celebrating by being snowed in and sending me out into the bitter snowy cold to go pick up some Chinese carryout... wink Yes Laren, that's me trying to guilt-trip you.
Does anyone else here celebrate the Chinese New Year? Is this *your* year (the same sign you were born under)?
I'll post my sign later, as it's time for my snowy trek in search of Chinese goodness...

Joshua_Ritter I'm a snake, so personally I want to eat boars. Woot! Me too as well! Okay, except that part about wanting to eat Boars. My mom's a Boar. Actually, I'm a Fire Snake. Each year has an element as well. This year is the Fire Pig, which I take to mean this is going to be a great year for barbecue. Last year was Wood Dog (also sometimes called Wolf), and the year prior was the Wood c**k. Heh. I was amused all that year... Next year will be a Fire year as well - they go two at a time around the sheng cycle, as far as I can tell. That being the cycle of creation. Wood feeds Fire feeds Earth feeds Metal feeds Water feeds Wood. Lather, rinse, repeat.

We had a special study break for it. ^_^ I was quite happy.
I'm a Fire Tiger, born in the hour of the Rat, if memory serves. (It's been a while since I looked at that book that elaborated on it.) I'm very tiger-ish, I've realized, so I'm quite happy.
Hmm...going backwards, my boyfriend would be a...Wood Ox, perhaps? I really need to look this stuff up again. >_<

Yarg, my copy of the book with the elements listed has some sort of weird camouflage. Every time I go hunting for it, it takes me *hours*. Gimme a bit, I swear it will eventually turn up. I never lend it out.

Found the book! Lemme just post the years following mine, since I seem to be the oldest person in the guild. I'll list the year, the day the Chinese year started, the Kua number (that's been translated as "star" in other books) for Male/Female, then the element and animal:
1977 (Feb. 1 cool - 5/1 - Fire Snake 1978 (Feb. 7) - 4/2 - Earth Horse 1979 (Jan. 2 cool - 3/3 - Earth Sheep 1980 (Feb. 16) - 2/4 - Metal Monkey 1981 (Feb. 5) - 1/5 - Metal c**k ( whee ) 1982 (Jan. 25) - 9/6 - Water Dog 1983 (Feb. 13) - 8/7 - Water Pig 1984 (Feb. 2) - 7/8 - Wood Rat 1985 (Feb. 20) - 6/9 - Wood Ox 1986 (Feb. 9) - 5/1 - Fire Tiger 1987 (Jan. 29) - 4/2 - Fire Rabbit 1988 (Feb. 17) - 3/3 - Earth Dragon 1989 (Feb. 6) - 2/4 - Earth Snake 1990 (Jan. 27) - 1/5 - Metal Horse 1991 (Feb. 15) - 9/6 - Metal Sheep 1992 (Feb. 4) - 8/7 - Water Monkey 1993 (Jan. 23) - 7/8 - Water c**k 1994 (Feb. 10) - 6/9 - Wood Dog 1995 (Jan. 31) - 5/1 - Wood Pig 1996 (Feb. 19) - 4/2 - Fire Rat 1997 (Feb. 7) - 3/3 - Fire Ox
And after that, if anyone's too young for that list, I'm surprised. If you are, extrapolate. You've got a fair chunk to work with. Does anyone have any good links to sites that explain about Kua numbers? I can post, but it'd involve basically typing in an entire long chapter from a book.

...Which also reminds me - does anyone have a break-down of the hours for the different animals? I had one, and I have no idea where I put it. All I know is that the hour of the Dog is around dinnertime, which is about no help.
