I think that if she was really your friend, she would accept you for who you are.

Listen i had a "friend" like that. She was actually more like my sister and she flat out said I will NOT be seen with you if you dress goth. I will not buy you gift cards for shops that sell dark clothes.
Listen its your choice just like its my choice. Dont let one ignorant person drag you down. If she really loves and respects you as a person she will understand. If not then maybe you need to think about how much you are putting into the relationship and how much she is putting into the relationship.

If I were in that situation, I would care more about losing a friend than my appearance. But that's just me, my suggestion to you would be to think about what you really want and what's important to you. If your friend is more important to you than how you look then don't dress goth. But if dressing the way you feel is more important to you then your friend then dress goth. That's all I can really tell you, I hope that everything works out for you.

yeah but her friend is making this choice not her. Her friend said basically i'll ditch you if you dress this certain way. That doesnt sounds like a very good friend to me. If a best friend says if you dont dress like me or act like me or whatever i wont be your friend anymore..then its not a friendship its a controlling situation. Friends are suppose to be accepting and there for each other.

Okay, if you ACt "Goth" than your friend's being a little shallow if she's going flip out about you wearing black or something.

I had "friends" like this in high school. It took me a long time to realise it, but if being able to control you is a condition of her friendship you need to decide whether she's worth your time.

I whent through the same thing as you did... my best friend in the entier world told me that she wouldn't agree with my choice, and so did a few other people. I think its because people are worried about what you'll become if you change one thing in your life. I sometimes surpirse people by dressing like a goth one day and then wearing a babe blue flower dress and light blue jeans the next. It throws people off, and sometimes they get mad at me. People will judge you on what you look like.

My sugjestion: don't go all out. Add a little bit here and a little bit there, and work your way up slowly. that way you give people a time to get use to your choice. For me, friends are the most important thing in the world. Next to Jesus of course ;P

Dressing a certain way does not make a person. If I were to want to start dressing in fluffy pink dresses and my best friend said that she'd ditch me if I did, I wouldn't because I value friendships more than my appearance. Like it or not, people judge you and the people who hang out with you by your appearance. Your reputation is the reputation of your friends. One of my friends is a really hardcore christian...she's always been that way...she's the kind of person that will shove religion down your throat because her pastor told her to. She is now getting the reputation as a druggie because she hangs out with kids who like to party. So, like it or not, her appearance does affect her friend and how people view her friend. Therefore, her friend has every right to ditch her if she changes her appearance, though I can't imagine anyone doing that I'm sure that it has happened. It doesn't mean that she's not really a friend, it means that she wouldn't be able to deal with the new reputation that she would get.

Act? How do you act goth?
In any case, if your friend can't handle you listening to Bauhaus or Sex Gang Children, then I don't understand what her issue is.

I think a lot of people have really valid points here--my personal opinion? Friends have never been so important to me. I really haven't gotten very close to any of them. I can understand why someone wouldn't want to be seen with a person that would make people look down on them, but it seems a bit nobler to stick with a friend through anything. I agree that you should think and pray--it'll come to you.

I quoted Res-san's post to pose a sub-question to the endlessly wise C G guild:

What the heck IS goth, really? Is it a dark style of dress? I mean, I know the denotation (old, extinct Germanic tribe of people; style of art/achtitecture propular in Baroque and Romanticism periods, etc.), but I really have no solid idea of what 'goth' really means as slang.

Thank you for your patience with me. ^^;

Surprisingly, Wikipedia actually has a good article on it.
Because I really don't feel like writing a whole essay on it.
