..::rules::.. To be honest, I have none. Some general guidelines, though:
I - Follow the ToS. I'm certainly not about to say to disregard it. II - Keep any unpleasantries directed toward me to the PM system. There's no need to air dirty laundry in public.
If I think of any more, I'll add them. You're welcome to post here, but wait until I've reserved the first page, okay?

Perhaps you wonder why, in the section where I'm supposed to be writing about myself, I have listed my favorite authors, favorite movies, and am starting on my favorite manga and plan to add more such things?
This is because I am poor at describing myself, for I view myself through prejudiced eyes, but by listing those things which appeal to me, those things which I love, I may grant those who read it a glimpse into what sort of person I am. After all, it is no great feat to determine something of a person's character based on their interests.
So, rather than tell you silly things, like that my real name is Bethany and that I have two cats and belong to too many extracurricular clubs, I have opted to share things about myself which are truly useful if one hopes to gain insight into my being. I doubt anyone does, but there might be someone out there who's interestd. Maybe.

..::griffins::..
Name: Trill Hatched/Acquired: 12.11.06 Gender: male Stage: adolescent Previous Stages: chick|juvenile|adolescent Human Companion: Silence Description: Bold, daring, and self-assured, Trill is of the opinion that there is no finer griffin than himself in the entire world. This is not truly arrogance, so much as the confidence which comes with being a strong griffin in an adolescent stage. He is very protective of those he decides to place under his care, but he is otherwise easy-going. History: Trill was the last hope of the Eyrie, given to Silence though she was too old because the man who rode his father harbored a secret love for her. He was raised with care and given the best instruction to be found within the Eyrie to ensure that he would grow into the legacy left him by his wild father and remarkable mother. He was the one who woke the dragon Yssriyyash and indirectly caused his human's deafness, but no one ever blamed him for that except himself. Mate: n/a
Name: Chade Hatched/Acquired: 1.24.07 Gender: male Stage: adult Previous Stages: chick|juvenile|adolescent Human Companion: Silence Description: Words which best describe Chade include circumspect, watchful, somewhat sly, clever, and aloof. However, he his quite devoted to Silence. Chade has more feline mannerisms than his adoptive older brother and a lower voice. He also has a dark side and a talent for making other griffins do as he wishes them to do. History: Chade was given to a thief called Sere as an egg in payment for services rendered. While she was on her way to Xuan City to sell his egg to a buyer who had alreay indicated an interest in purchasing it, but he hatched earlier than she anticipated. She died shortly thereafter, and the dragon Meshach gave him to Silence. Since then, he has traveled with Silence, Meshach, and Trill as they wander the land. Mate: n/a
Name: Ambrosia Hatched/Acquired: 9.21.07 / 7.2.07 Gender: female Stage: adult Previous Stages: chick|adolescent Human Companion: Patience Description: Little is known about Ambrosia at the moment. History: Ambrosia was to have belonged to a great man as an egg, but the man died and his servant, Niko, was the only one to care for her. She was fond of Niko, though not of the young nobleman, Geth, who helped him early in her life. When Niko left Geth, taking Ambrosia with him, they had some very lean times. While Patience was leaving the Eyrie to seek Silence he came across Niko, sick nearly unto death and starving. Ambrosia, too, was in bad shape. Both were beyond his powers to heal. Niko begged Patience to take Ambrosia and care for her and Patience found himself unable to refuse. Mate: n/a

..: surprised wners::..
Name: Liana Skywing, Silence Skywing Gender: female Age: 18 Griffins: Trill, Chade Physical Description: Tall and slim, with an athletic build, Silence is not particularly feminine-looking, particularly when one considers that she rarely behaves as a lady is expected to behave. Her hair is dark, though the exact shade changes based on the season and how much time she's spent outside, and she wears it in a long braid down her back. Her eyes are hazel, and therefore as difficult to place in color as her hair. Because she spends a great deal of time outdoors, her skin is tanned. Her hands are callused from performing all manner of work. Personality: Silence is neither quick to accept nor to condemn, but once she had formed an opinion, it takes a great deal of work to change her mind. She has learned to be patient and work without complaining, and she doesn't mind hard work. She does not often think about the consequences her actions before committing them, which has allowed her conscience to become quite well-developed. Silence is brave and relatively fearless, but she is prudent and knows when to be careful. Background: Silence was the daughter of two Eyrie riders, Dauntless and Grace Skywing. The year Silence was seven there was a profusion of mountain cats and her parents, along with most of the riders in the Eyrie, were sent to deal with the matter. The same year, a plague struck the Eyrie's griffins, killing some and rendering others sterile. Her parents died during the plague outbreak. Thus, when she turned nine, the age at which one usually receives a griffin egg and the opportunity to imprint on the hatchling, there was no egg for her to receive. Unlike most of her generation at the Eyrie, who left in search of other fortunes when it became apparent they would not become riders, Silence remained, though as an orphan she had fewer ties than her age-mates. When she was ten some riders captured a wild white griffin male. He was totally feral. Even so, Valour, a new-comer to the Eyrie, made it his mission to tame the griffin, which took him the better part of a year. H'raik, his griffin, was only loyal to Valour, who was three years her senior and similarly a ward of the Eyrie. They became friends, bound by being griffin-less in the Eyrie, and then by true friendhip. Later, word came of another Eyrie to the North and Fortitude, the flight leader, led an expedition to investigate, nominating Valour and his feral griffin to lead the Eyrie in his stead. The other riders concurred. When Silence was eighteen, Valour used his status to guarantee Silence the sole egg conceived that mating season, that of his griffin and the griffin of Sagacity, his lover, though there were younglings of an age to receive it. That egg bore Trill. Recent History: Trill woke a destructive force which left Silence deaf. Shortly after, a man calling himself Goren came to the Eyrie who had once been more than what he seemed. It was because of his presence, partly, that they Eyrie rejected her, for he naturally puts human beings ill at ease, that and he was teaching her to "read" a person's intentions - mostly through observation, but also how to open her perceptions so that her perceptions deepened uncannily. When Silence was driven out, Goren went with her. Since then, they have wandered, but Silence is growing weary of wandering and wants to settle down in one place. Note (A Change in Recent History): Trill led Silence to a cave where Yssriyyash was studying a cursed tome with the intent of breaking the curse, and Silence, understandably surprised, gasped, distracting the dragon from what he was doing. This lapse in his concentration allowed the tome's curse to take effect, forcing Yssriyyash into a human form and stealing Silence's hearing. Trill was remarkably unscathed. After that, Yssriyyash fled in shame, not sticking around to see what had happened to the human who had intruded upon his work, and Silence returned to the Eyrie in shock. And then the story follows similar lines once more, with Patience, Valour, and Courage working with Silence to help her cope without her sense of hearing. It changes again. Yssriyyash returned to the Eyrie, seeking the girl who had distracted him, hoping if he found her and re-created the conditions of his experiment in reverse he would be restored to his draconian state. When that failed, he left once more in disgust. Follow the posts as written for a time, with Patience teaching Silence to expand her perceptions and read people, since as a healer and physician he knows how to do these things, and scratch the bit where Yssriyyash gives Silence the ability to read minds. From there, everything is the same, except that Yssriyyash arrives just in time to rescue Silence in a human form and helps her escape. Later that night, she will meet with and bid farewell to Patience, and then she and Yssriyyash, who is calling himself Goren, will set off at a walk with Trill away from the Eyrie. With regards to the other RPs and posts I made with Meshach or Goren or Yssriyyash, assume that he is human, not a shape-shifted dragon, and he killed Sere. She didn't die of fright, though that is what he told Silence anyway. They also did not fly mostly, since Trill could not carry two people, but Silence was still flying on Trill's back and did fall, breaking her arm.
Name: Jarel Redclaw, Patience Redclaw Gender: male Age: 24 Griffins: Ambrosia Physical Description: Patience is tall and relatively fair of features. His hair is a very dark brown, and his eyes are also clear and relatively pale. He has long, graceful hands and is overall of a very slender build. His nose is long, thin, and somewhat pointed. Personality: Despite his name, he is not, actually, a particularly patient person. He is a fine healer, and a skilled physician, but his tolerance for fools is severely limited, and his temper can be quite short when dealing with them. However, he can be infinitely patient when waiting for something, and he can be highly empathetic, but most people think him aloof. In reality, if he's taken a liking to a person, then he is a true and loyal friend, and for all that his tongue can be sharp, it is never any sharper than can be endured by whatever person he's turned it on. Background: Patience was raised in the Eyrie and discovered early on that his gift for healing was far better suited to work in the infirmary than ridding a-griffin back, and so he never tried for an egg. When everyone else was learning to fly and training griffins, he was learning to cure wounds, draw out fevers, and set broken bones. He is an expert at what he does, and well-used to having his patients ignore his advice, which gives him the semblence of long-sufferance much of the time. His sister, Joy, had two children Kindo and Wonder, who she left in his care to follow Fortitude. He and his nephew and niece, respectively, do not get along well at all, but he cares for them out of a sense of familial duty. His sister is not in his best graces at the moment. He has been the Eyrie's primary physician and healer for many years, since his mentor, Usher, died. Patience has a virtue's name, even though he is not a rider, because it is a mark of respect for his expertise. Few non-riders are very occasionally granted such an honor. No one has used his true name, Jarel, since he turned fourteen, and most have forgotten it completely, which doesn't bother him in the least. Recent History: Patience became one of Silence's best friends during the time after she went deaf, and after Valour rejected her for the abilities Goren taught her he became her lover, but for an extraordinarily brief period of time, cut even shorter by her removal from the Eyrie. He will never forgive Sagacity for beginning the matter, nor Valour for allowing it, but he is a healer first and foremost, and will do his duty by the Eyrie. Revised Recent History: After training in part a replacement, Patience left the Eyrie to seek Silence, though he knew the chances of finding her were slim to nothing. Nevertheless, hecouldn't stand the idea of going his entire life without seeing her again. On his way he encountered Niko, whom he couldn't save, much to his chagrin, though he was able to save the griffin Ambrosia who was Niko's companion. Ambrosia is still not in peak condition, but with Patience's healing abilities and training her condition has been improving steadily.

..: surprised ther characters::.. All of the characters below are basically for reference at this point, with the exception of Meshach, and will not be RPed at any point in the future (well, maybe Patience, but I sincerely doubt it). Therefore, while I realize they have griffins, and I did (and I regret it) RP a thread in which they had griffins, they are, essentially, non-characters at this point.
Name: Gray Herdmanson, Valour Freeclaw Gender: male Age: 21 Griffins: H'raik Physical Description: Valour's got light brown hair which tends toward shagginess if he doesn't trim it. Because he usually has other things on his mind, he rarely remembers to trim it, and so it's really a matter of how long it takes someone else to get fed up with it hanging in his eyes. His eyes are somewhere between blue and green, depending on the light in which they're viewed. He calls them green, but it's debatable. His skin is naturally fair, but hours and hours and days and days of sun exposure have tanned him pretty thoroughly. There's also speculation that his hair may not be as light-colored as it is, naturally, and that it, too, was bleached by the sun. One of his top incisors is chipped from a fight he was in as a young man, but otherwise he has a pleasant smile. His features are somewhat angular and his build is that of an athlete - well-muscled, but not overtly so. He talks with his hands when he gets excited, and his face is very expressive. Personality: Valour takes things very seriously, but he has a sense of humour which occasionally turns up at inappropriate times. He has a finely-tuned sense of responsibility and tends to worry too much about everyone, though he has almost no regard for his own safety or welfare. He can't abide dishonest people, which makes duplicity very difficult for him. He holds honor in the highest regard, and takes all insults personally. Valour loves the Eyrie, though he was not born to its life, and there is no one whom he holds in such high esteem as his once-feral griffin, H'raik, except possibly Silence. Background: Valour was born Gray Herdmanson, the son of a shepherd, but he always aspired to be more. He grew up during a time when one could look to the Untamed Mountains and see a griffin circling above almost all the time. His family tithed to the Eyrie when he was young, as most shepherds living in the area did. It was a formality, as the Eyrie kept its own flocks, but it was a remnant of the days when it had been a necessity to keep the burgeoning griffin population fed. His father had drilled into him that there was no one more honorable than a griffin rider, and meeting one was a great honor, and that there was no greater honor than to ride a griffin. When he was ten, his father was slain defending the flock from a pack of wolves. A griffin rider saved Valour, earning him the boy's undying gratitude. When he was thirteen and his next-oldest brother old enough to watch the flocks, he started up the highest peak in the Untamed Mountains to the Eyrie, determined to make a life for himself there, somehow. When he got there, he found conditions dire, for the Eyrie was still recovering from the plague which had struck at such great detriment. A year later one of the riders came in with a tressed-up feral griffin. Valour immediately decided that, since there were no viable eggs being laid, he would ride the feral griffin, despite the griffin's aversion to the idea and the general Eyrie opinion that it could not be done, and that it would be best to simply kill the feral griffin. It took him until he was fifteen to assert his own supremecy over the feral griffin and cause it to accept and respect him. Then, years behind the other riders-in-training, he began training. It was truly difficult work, but work well worth it. When Fortitude, the leader of the Eyrie went to investigate rumours of another Eyrie, it was Valour who was chosen to lead. He has been the leader of the Eyrie for several years, during which there has been no communication from Fortitude or any of the others. Recent History: Valour gave Silence, with whom he was secretly in love, the only egg that his griffin fathered in hopes of becoming closer to her, and was generally successful in that respect until Goren took her under his tutelage and seemed to give her inhuman abilities to which he was unable to reconcile himself. He broke it off with Silence, unnerved by her new talent, but remained slightly bitter and eventually drove her from the Eyrie.
Name: Kindo Sunflight Gender: male Age: 12 Griffins: n/a Physical Description: Kindo's build is like that of his mother's side of the family, which is to say, tall and slender, though at his age he looks just plain skinny. He's almost always covered with a layer of grime, because his active personality takes him outside much of the time and he's at that age where bathing isn't really his thing. His eyes are brown and his hair is black. Personality: Kindo's kind of rough-and-tumble, and a very good wrestler, for his size. He can be very immature, particularly around his uncle, and he has little respect for authority, but for Valour, whom he worships. Background: Kindo is Patience's nephew and, until his mother left, he was quite content never to see his uncle unless he got badly knocked about. He was raised by his mother, who was a very beautiful, if somewhat thoughtless, woman, who instilled in him a very strong will, but never bothered to teach him about common sense. When Silence was given H'raik's egg, he thought that it was beyond unjust, since she was too old by far, according to Eyrie tradition, to receive it, and it has developed into an almost active dislike for her. He is the leader of a gang of other children of approximately his age which includes his younger sister, Wonder, of whom he is secretly fond, but will only admit it under duress. Recent History: None.
Name: Wonder Sunflight Gender: female Age: 10 Griffins: n/a Physical Description: Wonder takes after her father's build, being rather short and sturdy. She has his dark eyes, too, but her dark hair belongs to her mother. She has a tendency to freckle, though it's difficult to tell through the perpetual layer of dirt she wears like a second skin. She always has a skinned or bruised something because she scraps with the boys. Personality: Wonder is very slightly more reserved than her older brother, but not much, and has no difficulty making it known when she's not happy. She will whine incessantly until she gets her way, and though it is largely ineffective around the Eyrie, she tries anyhow. She is every bit as much of a brawler as her older brother, and often fights with him physically, though she usually comes out the loser in such scuffles. Background: Wonder, like her brother, rarely saw her uncle before her mother left her to him that she might follow Fortitude. She always had the tiniest crush on her uncle Patience, because he was so gentle and so kind, and that persisted even when she was left with him. She was hurt that she had not received Trill's egg, since she was closer to the correct age than most others in the Eyrie, and she was pleased to see Silence driven out of the Eyrie, but more because it means that she won't have to share her uncle's attention any more, she believes. She loves her brother, but not very much. Recent History: None.
Name: Firen Razorwing, Courage Razorwing Gender: male Age: 24 Griffins: Hraasta (deceased) Physical Description: Courage is tall, but one hardly notices it because his body is nearly perfectly proportioned for his height. Despite the fact that he no longer has a griffin to ride, he keeps in good shape and helps train riders when the urge strikes him, which requires fitness and strength. His hair is the color of polished gold and his eyes are dark green. His skin is fair, but it neither tans nor burns in the sun. He wears his hair cropped relatively short, by Eyrie standards, so that it neither falls into his eyes nor onto his neck. When he was younger he wore it longer, but that was when he wanted to attract attention. Personality: In his youth, Courage was best described as a jerk, at least in Valour's point of view. However, most people saw him as a likeable, charismatic, clever person. He preferred the opinion others held of him, for obvious reasons, but he never denied that Valour was essentially correct about him. His name influenced him from an early age to try to be courageous in all that he did, and it served him well. However, at this point in his life, his personality is considerably altered. After Hraasta's death, he barely spoke to anyone and withdrew into himself. He retained all the personality traits which he had previously possessed, but he never exhibited them. As is often the case with riders who lose griffins, his spirit was broken. Background: Courage grew up in the Eyrie, always certain that he would become the flight leader some day, and trained to it from an early age because he had such natural skill with griffins. When he was old enough to 'print he got Hraasta, a fox-colored griffin with gold dapples. The two of them were legendary for the ease with which they did everything, and if it gave him a swelled head, no one really minded, because he deserved to be proud. In the mating flight which bore Trill, Hraasta and H'raik were locked into a battle for supremacy which left Hraasta dead and nearly killed H'raik. After Hraasta's death, Courage tried not to blame Valour for his griffin's death, but he had never cared for the shepherd's son, and the fact that Valour's griffin had killed his was inescapable. He almost left the Eyrie, but for the protestations of his friends there, who assured him that he would always have a place in the Eyrie whether or not he had a griffin and offered him the use of their griffins whenever he wished. Their misguided offers stung and though he stayed he became reclusive and was rarely seen. Recent History: After Silence's accident which left her deaf, Courage emerged from his hermitage and helped train her and Trill. Though he said it was because he was the best-suited to training griffins, it was truly because he couldn't help liking Silence and pitying her in her handicap, particularly after Valour abandoned her. After Silence left the Eyrie with Trill and Goren, he began to resume his former position, but in direct opposition to Valour. It's surprising how much support he has.
Name: Yssriyyash, Goren, Meshach Gender: male Age: 893 Griffins: n/a Physical Description: In his now-permanent human form, he appears a copper-skinned young man of twenty or so with startling turquoise eyes and some draconian characteristics, like ridiculously sharp canine teeth - almost like fangs. He is long and lean and moves with grace and near-preternatural speed, and has a tendency to tilt his head to one side, and also to stare. Personality: He was not very old for a dragon. He will not reach maturity for another hundred years or so, and so his personality is much like that of any creature in the late stages of adolescence. He is curious, adventurous, and a risk-taker. He always seems smug and omniscient, and he can be a merciless tease, but he is not cruel. He is not honest, but he prefers games equivocation and lying by omission to outright lies. Background: Unknown. Recent History: He met with Silence when Trill led her to a spot where he, Yssriyyash, was studying a cursed tome. The tome's curse forced him into a human form and deafened the hapless girl. Trill escaped unscathed. From that point on, he has fixated on the girl, Silence, and found ways to spend time with her, though whether he does so for his own amusement or for some other reason is a mystery, and he is not one for explaining himself. Yssriyyash is his true draconian name, and to know it would have given Silence great power over him if he was a dragon, which is something he has never told her and plans not to tell her. He is now trapped in a human form and bound by all the limitations therein, but out of an uncharacteristic feeling of guilt he offered to help Silence compensate for her new disability.

Shortly thereafter, a plague struck the Eyrie griffin. They became lethargic, and their movements were stiff and almost arthritic. That was the first stage. After that, they began to molt out of season and their flesh was covered with lesions. These lesions turned out to be communicable to human beings, and infected a number of Eyrie riders. These riders suffered the same symptoms as their mounts, proceeding to the third, and final stage which was characterised by internal hemorraging which caused those infected to vomit and void blood. Predictably this stage resulted in a great deal of damage to organs and severe dehydration. If a human or a griffin managed to survive this stage, their chances of survival overall were high. However, the hemorraging would often cause sterility in both humans and griffins and it was impossible to determine whether a griffin had been rendered sterile until the next mating season, when there were already pathetically few griffins left alive. Since griffins mate for life and many had lost their mates, the number of breeding griffins was further reduced. In the end, even those griffins which laid eggs were unsuccessful because the eggs either cracked when the mother sat on them to warm them - an unforeseen effect of the plague - or they never hatched. In some cases the embryo was dead in the egg, but in others eggs bore no embryo at all.
..::rock hoppers::..
Rock hoppers are very unpleasant creatures which inhabit the Untamed Mountains. They resemble arachnids, but they have wings which are mostly vestigal, but not always. They are about a meter long and not usually so wide. They are carnivorous, preying mostly on small animals, but when they are in family groups, as they remain for two months after hatching, they will swarm larger creatures. Their teeth are not poisonous, but they might as well be, for, like arachnids, they have no methods of self-grooming and so carry all sorts of infectious bacteria. The reaction to rock hopper bites varies from person to person and rock hopper to rock hopper, therefore, depending on the person's immune system and what bacteria the rock hopper carries.

..::la galleria::.. Silence and Grace
 After Silence's parents died, she would often dream of being with them in the hereafter, but she rarely remembered these dreams upon waking.
Yssriyyash
 In his dragon form, Meshach is approximately a third again as large as an adult griffin, because he is only an adolescent dragon. As an adult, he will be fully twice the sice of an adult griffin.

..::the eyrie::.. The Eyrie was established five centuries ago by an imperial power. The emperor established several such Eyries to act as messengers and guardians for the people. There were four in each province, one at each compass point.
The Eyries were set up with several squads or flights of griffin riders, men and women who had been present at a griffin's hatching and caused the griffin chick to imprint upon them, instead of on their griffin parents. These flights were led by flight leaders, who reported to and obeyed the rider whose griffin was the mate of the male who dominated the others. The Eyries were led by women because it was generally assumed that women made more efficient leaders, just as men made more efficient soldiers. Because griffins mate for life, whenever the leader's mate could no longer maintain his position, leadership would change.
In the time since their establishment, much has changed. Some provinces have since seceded from the Empire and become powerful countries in their own rights. As the Empire's range decreased, so, too, did the power and usefulness of the Eyries. So, many Eyries disbanded, and nearly all fell out of contact with one another.
Those who left their Eyrie could not be rid of their griffin companions, who were bonded to them, which made assimilation very difficult unless they found ways to legitimize their possession of an immortal creature. So they made griffins available to the common man, selling their griffins' eggs and chicks to be used as racers, messengers, guards, or whatever else came to the mind of the buyer, thus earning themselves a niche in society and preventing the griffin kind from extinction.
The Eyrie from which Silence hails is one of the few which has held to its traditions, unaware that the Untamed Mountains were ceded to Nemoren, though they have altered somewhat in the two hundred years since the Empire's dissolution. Most notably, the Eyrie is no longer led by a woman, and the people who dwell there now serve neither as messengers, nor guardians. Now they keep to themselves and protect only their immediate area, and then only when called upon.
So, while the age of the Eyrie is drawing to a close, griffins elsewhere are flourishing.
