I am blatantly stealing the character list idea from the AIM-based RP Poetical Rain and Arctic Vixen have in Xuan City. Full credit to those two geniuses. If you want me to add a character, PM me with a filled-out form. I'll put up background information on the Eyrie later.

Characters

Name: Silence
Played by: Princess_Feylin
Age: 18
Gender: female
Character Type: main/protagonist
Description: Tall and slim, with an athletic build, Silence is not particularly feminine-looking. Her hair is dark, though the exact shade changes seasonally, like a mink, and she wears it in a long braid down her back. Her eyes are hazel, and therefore as difficult to place in color as her hair. Because she spends a great deal of time outdoors, her skin is tanned. Her hands are callused from all manner of work.
Personality: Silence is neither quick to accept nor to condemn, but once she had formed an opinion, it takes a great deal of work to change her mind. She has learned to be patient and work without complaining, and she doesn't mind hard work. She does not often think about the consequences her actions before committing them, which has allowed her conscience to become quite well-developed. Silence is brave and relatively fearless, but she is prudent and knows when to be careful.
Background: Silence was the daughter of two griffin riders, Dauntless and Grace, and so she was raised in the Eyrie. During her lifetime, a blight struck the griffins of the Eyrie, almost like a plague or avian influenza, killing some and rendering many sterile. Thus, when she turned nine, the age at which one usually receives a griffin egg and the opportunity to imprint on the hatchling, there was no egg for her to receive. Unlike most of her generation at the Eyrie, who left in search of other fortunes, she remained. Later, word came of another Eyrie, and Fortitude, the leader at the time, took about a third of the Eyrie with him to investigate, nominating Valour and his feral griffin, H'raik, to lead the Eyrie in his stead. The other riders concurred. When she was eighteen, Valour's griffin and that of his lover, Sagacity, conceived of a single egg, and Valour granted her the egg, though there were younglings of an age to receive it.
Griffin: Trill

Name: Seto Kindo
Played by: ebil mind
Age: 12
Gender: Male
Character Type: Main/Emoish
Description: Seto
Personality: He always trys to stay to himself and keep his emotion to himself. He does let it out the more he gets used to having someone around him often, he hardly cares for anyone expect Silence and Ming-Ming. Thoese are the only two he shows emotion too. He is much like a loner.
Background: He was six when both his parents died. They were both griffan riders when his father griffan attacked his mother griffan in a flight drill. All four of them came crashing to the ground and to there deaths. Before they died his father stayed at the stables more often and his mother stayed with him. He grew to hate his father more and more then when the accident took his mother he was heart broken. Then the Eryie wanted to give him to another couple but he ran to get away not wanting to belive them, he grew up to hate them. He obtain his griffan egg by some old women placeing it down in front of him then leaving, that is how he meet Silence and his story begiens.
Griffin: Ming-Ming

Name: Valour
Played by: Princess_Feylin
Age: 21
Gender: male
Character Type: supporting actor
Description: Valour's got light brown hair which tends toward shagginess if he doesn't trim it. Because he usually has other things on his mind, he rarely remembers to trim it, and so it's really a matter of how long it takes someone else to get fed up with it hanging in his eyes. His eyes are somewhere between blue and green, depending on the light in which they're viewed. He calls them green, but it's debatable. His skin is naturally fair, but hours and hours and days and days of sun exposure have tanned him pretty thoroughly. There's also speculation that his hair may not be as light-colored as it is, naturally, and that it, too, was bleached by the sun. One of his top incisors is chipped from a fight he was in as a young man, but otherwise he has a pleasant smile. His features are somewhat angular and his build is that of an athlete - well-muscled, but not overtly so. He talks with his hands when he gets excited, and his face is very expressive.
Personality: Valour takes things very seriously, but he has a sense of humour which occasionally turns up at inappropriate times. He has a finely-tuned sense of responsibility and tends to worry too much about everyone, though he has almost no regard for his own safety or welfare. He can't abide dishonest people, which makes duplicity very difficult for him. He holds honor in the highest regard, and takes all insults personally. Valour loves the Eyrie, though he was not born to its life, and there is no one whom he holds in such high esteem as his once-feral griffin, H'raik.
Background: Valour was born the son of a shepherd, but he always aspired to be more. He grew up during a time when one could look to the Untamed Mountains and see a griffin circling above almost all the time. His family tithed to the Eyrie when he was young, as most shepherds living in the area did. It was a formality, as the Eyrie kept its own flocks, but it was a remnant of the days when it had been a necessity to keep the burgeoning griffin population fed. His father had drilled into him that there was no one more honorable than a griffin rider, and meeting one was a great honor, and that there was no greater honor than to ride a griffin. When he was ten, his father was slain defending the flock from a pack of wolves. A griffin rider saved Valour, earning him the boy's undying gratitude. When he was thirteen and his next-oldest brother old enough to watch the flocks, he started up the highest peak in the Untamed Mountains to the Eyrie, determined to make a life for himself there, somehow. When he got there, he found conditions dire, for the Eyrie was still recovering from the plague which had struck at such great detriment. A year later one of the riders came in with a tressed-up feral griffin. Valour immediately decided that, since there were no viable eggs being laid, he would ride the feral griffin, despite the griffin's aversion to the idea and the general Eyrie opinion that it could not be done, and that it would be best to simply kill the feral griffin. It took him until he was fifteen to assert his own supremecy over the feral griffin and cause it to accept and respect him. Then, years behind the other riders-in-training, he began training. It was truly difficult work, but work well worth it. When Fortitude, the leader of the Eyrie went to investigate rumours of another Eyrie, it was Valour who was chosen to lead. He has been the leader of the Eyrie for several years, during which there has been no communication from Fortitude or any of the others.
Griffin: H'raik

Name: Patience
Played by: Princess_Feylin
Age: 25
Gender: male
Character Type: supporting
Description: Patience is tall and relatively fair of features. His hair is a very light brown, almost blond, and his eyes are also clear and relatively pale. He has long, graceful hands and is overall of a very slender build. His nose is long, thin, and somewhat pointed.
Personality: Despite his name, he is not, actually, a particularly patient person. He is a fine healer, and a skilled physician, but his tolerance for fools is severely limited, and his temper can be quite short when dealing with them. However, he can be infinitely patient when waiting for something, and he can be highly empathetic, but most people think of him as something like aloof. In reality, if he's taken a liking to a person, then he is a true and loyal friend, and for all that his tongue can be sharp, it is never any sharper than can be endured by whatever person he's turned it on.
Background: Patience was raised in the Eyrie and discovered early on that his gift for healing was far better suited to work in the infirmary than ridding a-griffin back, and so he never tried for an egg. When everyone else was learning to fly and training griffins, he was learning to cure wounds, draw out fevers, and set broken bones. He is an expert at what he does, and well-used to having his patients ignore his advice, which gives him the semblence of long-sufferance much of the time. His sister had two children Kindo and Wonder, who she left in his care to follow Fortitude. He and his nephew and niece, respectively, do not get along well at all, but he cares for them out of a sense of familial duty. His sister is not in his best graces at the moment. He has been the Eyrie's primary physician and healer for the past several years, since his mentor, Usher, died. Patience has a virtue's name, even though he is not a rider, because it is a mark of respect for his expertise. Few non-riders are granted such an honor. No one has used his true name since he turned fourteen, and most have forgotten it completely, which doesn't bother him in the least.
Griffin: none

Name: Kindo
Played by: ebil mind
Age: 12-ish
Gender: male
Character Type: supporting
Description: Kindo's build is like that of his mother's side of the family, which is to say, tall and slender, though at his age he looks just plain skinny. He's almost always covered with a layer of grime, because his active personality takes him outside much of the time and he's at that age where bathing isn't really his thing. His eyes are brown and his hair is black.
Personality: Kindo's kind of rough-and-tumble, and a very good wrestler, for his size. He can be very immature, particularly around his uncle, and he has little respect for authority, but for Valour, whom he worships.
Background: Kindo is Patience's nephew and, until his mother left, he was quite content never to see his uncle unless he got badly knocked about. He was raised by his mother, who was a very beautiful, if somewhat thoughtless, woman, who instilled in him a very strong will, but never bothered to teach him about common sense. When Silence was given H'raik's egg, he thought that it was beyond unjust, since she was too old by far, according to Eyrie tradition, to receive it, and it has developed into an almost active dislike for her. He is the leader of a gang of other children of approximately his age which includes his younger sister, Wonder, of whom he is secretly fond, but will only admit it under duress.
Griffin: none

It was not true that the mountains were untamed. They were only mostly untamed. There was an outpost of civilization there: the Eyrie. She had been born there, the daughter of griffin riders Dauntless and Grace. Her true name, the one which would be used, perhaps three times in her life, her childhood, her marriage, and her funerary rites. Her given name, the name she had received with her griffin egg, was Silence. She was called Si for short by her friends.

She had waited for a griffin egg for years. Usually, a child in the Eyrie received an egg when they were nine, if one was available, and if not, as soon after as possible. Si had not received one.

There had been none, and that was the problem. The griffins in the Eyrie had not laid any eggs for almost ten years. That wasn't quite true. They had laid eggs, but none of them had been viable, that is, until hers. The physicians of the Eyrie said so. They were sure of it this time.

And it was hers. Valour gave it to her, despite the fact that there were a few other children in the Eyrie who ought to have received it. It wasn't really Valour's egg to dispose of, even though it had been laid by his griffin's mate, but as the flight leader, he was in charge of distributing eggs.

She had always liked Valour, and his griffin, H'raik, despite H'raik's ill manners. The snowy white griffin had been captured wild, and he had never quite adjusted to living with other griffins in the confines of the Eyrie. Valour had not been raised in the Eyrie either. He had come at thirteen, when she was ten, four months after the second egg she was to have had failed to hatch live. They had never been friends, and now that he was the flight leader they rarely spoke at all, but she still liked him.

Now all she had to do was hatch the egg and raise whatever came out, and then she would be a rider in the flight, as she had dreamed of being for all eighteen years of her life.
_____

Silence was stationed to watch for people coming to the mountain. It happened so rarely, she couldn't see why they bothered keeping watch. It was her job to help any lost travellers who might happen by. She wondered if the crown even remembered that the Eyrie still existed.
_____

Silence sat, the embodiment of her name, for hours it seemed before the monotony was interrupted by a sound of someone beating through brush. She climbed to her feet carefully, mindful of the width of the branch she rested on, and walked toward the end of the branch to get a look. No one in the Eyrie was afraid of heights.

It wasn't a human. It was merely a doe and her fawn. Prey food. She settled back against the base of the branch and returned to brooding. She did a lot of that, lately, she found, and wished to be rid of the habit. She knew it made her a poor companion. She wondered that anyone wanted to be around her. She barely wanted to be around herself of late.

Her thoughts turned to the Eyrie. The population had dwindled with the griffin population. It was a rare rider who lived past forty, the life being what it was, and although griffins, being semi-immortal, remained strong long after their human companions aged to the point of being decrepit, after their riders were too old to ride, they tended to remove themselves from the Eyrie with their riders.

It used to be that everyone stayed in the Eyrie for as long as they wished, until death, even, but that plague which had gone through had cut great swathes through their ranks, leaving the patrol flights without enough manpower. And there had been the rumours of another Eyrie far to the north which so many had gone to investigate. There had been no word from those which had left, and their departure had been three years ago.

Valour worked so hard. She saw the candles burning under his door late into the night as he strove to set to right all that the Eyrie ought, despite its decreased numbers. She felt sorry for him, and would have been willing to help, but her help was unnecessary. He had Sagacity, Sage, for that. She was far more use than Silence could ever be, and beautiful to boot.

Silence sighed, irritated by the direction of her thoughts, and swung around the trunk of the tree to watch on the other side.

Seto sat with his leges hanging off a side of the a cliff. He felt what was under his right arm.A gryphon egg. A strange thing that some woman just put it down at his feet. He was also toying with a katana at his side. His mother old katana before a gryphon riding accident left both his father, morther, and there gryphones dead at the bottom of the moutian. Now he is 12. Alone no family, shuned by most for his parents deaths since they were once great warriors how died of a stupid mistake.

He was always running away from other houses. Cliff to cliff he would jump to get away from them. He had to wipe away a tear that sprung up. He wanted to run now, he couldn't with the egg.

He was actually thinking hard. If the other find out they might take it from him. He would have to hid his egg. He always so the leaders riseing up to the sky and leaving.

Once he even went up to one and ask to see his gryphon. The guy just laughed and went on. Even the formation leader never seen him as a rider, but here he was with his own gryphon egg.

He heard that a girl got an egg, he was sure if she found out she would just tell since he didn't even have to wait long since he was just given it out of the blue.

The eyrio he thought. What were they going to do if they found out. He would have to tell them later if it hatches then what. It would be taken from him, he be filed with tryesone what would happen. He sighed.

Silence was ambivalant when Courage came to relieve her. He wasn't particularly likeable, and never had been, but she couldn't bring herself to dislike him since he lost Gra'ack to the plague. He had been too sad for too long, his pride broken. She, like most others in the Eyrie, were uncomfortable around him, to have lost a griffin to whom he was so closely bonded...

She wanted to return to check on her egg, though she knew that it would hatch no sooner if she hovered, but she decided to wait. There were other things she could, and probably should, do while she was out of the Eyrie. So Silence dropped out of the tree, offering Courage a smile which he returned belatedly, and landed softly, as though on a cat's paws.

Silence walked briskly to the cliff side of Untamed Mountain. She had intended, while there, to practice falling, which was a necessary practice she had let flag in the excitement of being given an egg. The winds on the open cliffs were frigid and strong, but that just added a bit of a challenge.

She walked over the edge of one of the middle cliffs, twisting mid-air so that she faced the rock face. She let herself fall for about forty feet before reaching out to catch herself on a tiny ledge. Her feet scrabbled for a hold briefly before she found a half-inch portion which could hold her weight.

Silence turned her head to gauge the distance down to the next ledge and saw that it was occupied by a pre-pubescent. That would complicate things a bit, as her holds were crumbling beneath her. She cursed softly as she fell once more, her arms pinwheeling before one hand caught on the edge of the boy's ledge.

"I'm fine," she said. "Don't try to help."

She slapped her other hand over the edge and pulled herself level, and then torqued so that she sat on the edge of the cliff.

"Nice afternoon for climbing," she said, wiping sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand.

Seto moved over from were he was sitting so she had more room to get up. He turned his back to the egg to hid it. He blushed for being surprised by her. He then looked quickly for a place to hid his egg he couldn't find one.

He looked at her. "You should try to pick a better place to grab." He said as he normaly did that from the village. "

"Are you looking for me..."

He shifted uneasly.
PostPosted: Fri Dec 08, 2006 1:24 pm

"Looking for...you?" Silence was mystified.

There was, she knew, every chance that he was a runaway, but it was hardly her job to see to every child who decided they wanted to spite their guardians.

"And you're right about the grabbing, but the point of the exercise, for me, anyway, is just to grab something and hold on, and then pull myself up. It's an exercise I have to do for the Eyrie. I've no arm strength." She shrugged.

"I do apologize for disturbing you," she said, ignoring his poor attempts to hide something. Whatever he was hiding was likely none of her business, and young children tended to value odd things as treasure and feel that others want to steal it, for no reason anyone else can fathom.

She climbed to her feet, bracing herself against the wall, and cast a glance upwards. Up was going to be harder than down. She looked down at the boy and saw accidentally a griffin egg. That explained a bit.

Silence knew she ought to take the boy to the Eyrie so that he could be trained with, well, it would be her, she supposed. She was the only other person in the Eyrie who owned an egg. They would probably be training together, if he decided he wanted to go that route. It was really his decision. The Eyrie by no means had a monopoly on the world's griffins anymore.

"If you're not going to go to the Eyrie, I would suggest that you find another route across the mountain," she advised, feeling out a hand-hold. "If someone else notices that egg, they'll want to train you up and add you to a flight, whether you want to be a part of it or not."

She flashed a grin. "It's your choice, though. In the Eyrie, we assume that if a person's mature enough to have an egg, they're mature enough to make their own decisions."

He frowned. "They shuned me when both my parents and there gryphons died. They sayed I could never fly or own a griffn..." He said quite. "I will show them then." He said as he went to pick up the egg.

"...I will go with you...only if...they wont take away my egg..." He said as he got up.

He looked on the ground for his rope pack which he made around the egg to hold it to his back. He started to follow.

It was tougher with the egg. "..." He grunted at the extra work. "Are you the female to get a egg..." He said as he came to a ledge and started to follow.

He was more tired for some resome. The egg felt like the chick inside was moving but it must of just been him.

A large black gryphon stared curiously down at the two children from a ledge higher up, a white cloak draped over her neck. Her ears perked forward adn she opened her beak, though made no sound.A light jingling sound could be hear as her tail swished from side to side, and even more so with each move due to the many bells adorning each item she wore.

She closed he beak and danced lightly from foot to foot, looking as if she wanted to leap down for a closer look, but something was stopping her.

Seto looked up thinking he heard a strage jingle like noise. He just shock his head and waited for the girl.

"Why under the heavens would they take your egg from you? It's yours," Silence said, sliding back down the cliff face. "Come on. If you're carrying an egg, there are safer ways up to the Eyrie."

She didn't comment on his remark about his parents being shunned. She couldn't believe that her beloved Eyrie would do that, and she knew everyone in the Eyrie, and had never seen this boy before in her life.

Silence brushed her hair out of her eyes. It was escaping its braid. She would miss her hair when she had to cut it eventually, but that wouldn't be for some time yet, not until she would be riding her griffin. Griffins a bit to mature.

"As to your question," she said, "I am the female to get an egg. How did you hear about that?"

She was interested to know how this boy whom she had never seen before had come to know about the Eyrie and its goings-on. And how he had come by an egg which was, to all appearances, viable. But those were things for Valour to find out, not her.

She led him around the ledge and back through the caves which hollowed this portion of Untamed Mountain, which had once been called Griffin's Peak, ages and ages ago. They emerged into deciduous forest and she started up the track to the Eyrie. It would have been faster, perhaps, to climb, but harder on the boy.

"My name, by the way, is Silence."

"My family are...really...be shunned since...they died in a griffan flying practice that went wrong...cost them there lives and the griffans...I was 6 when it happend..." He had to jump down which made him shacky when he landed.

He watched her walk ahead. "How old...are you." He asked which surprised him. He was starting to feel the extra weight on his back.

"My name is...Seto..." He said silently.
PostPosted: Mon Dec 11, 2006 12:45 pm

"It's nice to meet you, Seto. I'm eighteen. I know I don't look it," Silence answered.

It was true. She had never looked her age. She always looked older or younger, but never her actual age. It had always been so.

She cocked her head to one side, a sound she had heard earlier finally registering. A jingling, like that of a harness. Which reminded her...

"I'm sorry about your parents, Seto."

Silence could see that Seto was beginning to feel the weight of his egg, but she knew that children of his age didn't appreciate it when others offered to help. They always seemed to take it as some sort of slight to their own abilities.

She slowed her pace surreptitiously, hoping to make the trek easier on Seto with his unborn burden. Someone from the Eyrie really ought to have noticed them by now and come down to greet them. But then, they were stretched thin enough that, maybe, Valour hadn't assigned anyone to this post. She'd mention it the next time she got a chance.

The gryphon was now flying above the trees, ears twitching every now and then as she peered down to see if the two small humans were still there.Atop her back was a human, a man who was wearing the white cloak that had been before draped across her back.

The man stared downward, despite his lack of sight, as the gryphon flew, knowing they were above trees by the sounds of the winds blowing through them.He tugged lightly downward on the collar around the black gryphon's neck in a silent command, still staring blidnly down as the gryphon turned torwards the ground, aimed to land in a spot clear of trees.

He nodded. The in it's rope holder was starting to cut into his chest and shoulders. He winced as he steped on a rock wrong and almost fell. He got back up and paced beside her.

"Don't be. They were stupid to make such a mistake and kill all four of them." He said dryly. He was not to fond of them doing this to him even after they were dead.

He then noticed that the wind of some trees were moving. "Do the gryphones get out of the stables..." He asked as he sow a big one fly by.

Silence's gaze followed Seto's.

"That's not one of our griffins," she said softly.

A thrill of hope ran through her. Perhaps one of the others had returned from their search for the rumoured Eyrie! That would be...indescribably wonderful.

She watched the griffin spiraling for a landing at some point not far from her current location. She wanted to run to greet the griffin and its rider, but she had Seto to think of. She was going to be such a horrible parent. If she ever found a mate, of course.

Her expression shifted as these thoughts crossed her face, but finally one of determination settled permanently.

"Seto, would you mind if I carried your egg for a bit? It's not the world's easiest track, and I need to get to that griffin quickly, which I cannot do if I'm to lead you while you carry your egg." She made certain to say that the egg was his. She hardly needed two, and she didn't want him to think she was trying to take the thing from him.
