Okay, I know I can do this, but I need a little help. This is like butting my head against a wall, the guy is so stubborn! He just keeps saying that evolution is a religion over and over and over again. Thing is: he's not stupid. And he's an excellent debator. But I believe that people should be able to defend what they say and think or accept that they are wrong. And right now, I'm having trouble defending it because I'm underprepared! Can you help me?

I need advice on how to refute the following:

Evolution is a religion.
Evolution does not stick to biology, it attempts to explain all of how life arose.
Evolution is racist.
Teaching evolution in public school violates Christian students' rights.
There is no way stars and planets could have formed other than by creation.

He used this, which, I'm sure, was quote mined:

Quote:
Darwin, Charles, “The Descent of Man,” 2nd ed. (New York: A.L. Burt Co., 1874), 797 pp.

“At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilized races of man will almost certainly exterminate and replace the savage races throughout the world. At the same time the anthropomorphous apes…will no doubt be exterminated. The break between man and his nearest allies will then be wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilized state, as we may hope, even than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as now between the negro or Australian and the gorilla.”

And there is WAY more than that. Check out the post.

Thnak you very much, Talk.Origens is probably the best resource we have. But he's already called it a terrible crutch to rely on. (Which is why it's very interesting that he can't refute anything they say.)

I think what I really need help dealing with is talking to people when they've got a skull like a brick wall. I know he's full of nonsense, but he's smart, so he's good at defending the nonsense he spews out. And he's an excellent debater. He changes the subject and twists and manipulates words like a professional.

I'm not a member of deviantart, also I have to use a library computer at the moment, and this all seems pretty hardcore. So I'd like to help but I don't have the time. You could try pestering Vryko Lakas; he lives and breathes to invite smackdown on creationists.

Some advice I can give though; creationists are almost always blind to reason. After years of observation, it appears that creationists literally cannot see an argument that proves them wrong. They thrive on spin and chicanery. There are certain techniques you can use to lessen the impact; for example, trying asking them to explain the theory of evolution. They don't understand what evolution is, and if they even bother, they will get it (very badly) wrong, thus showing the world how stupid they are.

Apart from that, have a good grounding in science. Creationism and evolution are not polar opposites; creationism rejects all of science. We know that the universe is expanding, we know that it's billions of years old; if you know why we know that, and what it means, then it's easy to explain to creationists that and it's really another nail in the coffin for young earth creationism. The theory of evolution just happens to fit in snugly into the framework of geology and paleontology, which provide ages of the Earth that fit in snugly with what we know of cosmological ages from astrophysics.

I tend to avoid devart forums, the structure of them is just a little too... *shudders*

Anyhoo, my usual responses to these topics goes something along these lines.

Quote:
Evolution is a religion.

The theory of evolution has none of the characteristics of a religion. Ergo it's not a religion. I would then challenge them to define religion in a way that is broad enough to include evolution.

Quote:
Evolution does not stick to biology, it attempts to explain all of how life arose.

I would challenge them to show me where it does that. Any references to the big bang or geology are given their correct names.

If it continues I explain that they are confusing evolution with a naturalistic explanation of life, the universe, and everything, in other words, with all of science.

Quote:
Evolution is racist.

probably something short like "racists are racist" They can abuse and distort evolution to support their ideas, but they also distort Christianity to the same goal.

Quote:
Teaching evolution in public school violates Christian students' rights.

If they want to take a science class, they will get one. Science doesn't really care what their religion is.

Quote:
There is no way stars and planets could have formed other than by creation.

I would just google/wiki planetary formation, and point out that planets are little more than balls of rock.

How are they supposed to know that they don't believe in evolution before they are taught what evolution is? Such a retarded argument.

then apparently science is also violating christian rights. Lets just make everything more conveniant for their brainwashing methods.
