I just received another e-mail form The Defenders of Wildlife, outlining Idaho's new proposal to kill wolves. The governor said he'd like to be the first to shoot one himself. Wyoming is proposing to "aggressively manage" its wolf population by killing at least 66% of the population.
It's days like these and news like the above that make me want to do drastic things. When I mean drastic, it makes me feel like I want to be dead, because I am ashamed I am human.
Please don't mistake this post as a suicide threat, because it's not. I would never take my own life. But hypothetically, it sounds reasonable to me. If I were, I'd leave a small book written by me before my last moments outlining exactly why I chose to end my life. It makes me sad, ashamed, and angry that I am among these horrible human beings. People who think they're better than animals, hell, even better than other people. People who have no qualms in killing an animal just to "reduce the population." People who approve of horrible ways of hunting animals and people who abuse animals. People who throw their trash on the ground without a care in the world. People who b***h to Yellowstone to widen their roads so their ******** mobile homes can make it to a campsite one with otherwise have to drive to or even walk to (and they have started this effort, so I hear). People who don't give a s**t about recycling or wasting water because "they'll be dead by the time things start to happen."
I'm not even talking about the environment. Even look at our fellow man. Restaurants give people WAY too much ******** food for a serving. Millions of Americans a DAY waste enough food to feed all the third world countries for a damn year. I don't have facts, and I never read that, but I can count on me being somewhat close to that. Regardless, people are starving in the Middle East and Africa, and Americans are shoveling food in their faces at every opportunity they can. We're so damn obese that diet and pill commericals plague the television hour after hour. Are we that ******** selfish? We procreate to "carry on" the genes pool, but what about the children in homes? People spit on the homeless and tell them to get a ******** job, stop drinking, and to live somewhere else other than in front of the library while they go home and snuggle into their warm beds in their warm houses with warm food. What happened? I don't even consider us to be human anymore. The word "humanity" has lost all of its meaning to me. In The Matrix, the antagonist related the human race to a virus. I did then, and do more so now believe that statement 100 percent of the way. We b***h and moan about religion this and religion that. When did the world get so uptight about things other than reality? "Religion is real, blah blah blah." To some people yes. But what I mean is what happened to the real issues, like war, famine, plagues, pain, violence? How is religion going to solve that?
I know I'm ranting, and that was the entire purpose. I'm still angry, but I needed to get that out. I can go on and on and on. If you feel like responding to this, you're more than welcome to, and I discourage flames and instead open this up to mature discussion. I'll actually be shocked if anyone read this, but yeah. I can always count on you guys to let me vent. ^.~

More caribou were being affected by the oil and gas industries, hunters, roads and their homes being logged. If you have some kind of vitamin deficiency, why take away iron? Wolves don't always eat the caribou anyways. They have been known to survive off of rodents. Naturally the wolves would be taking out the weaker caribou or the young. They could be taking out the sickness from the herds. I guess killing the wolves is easier than fixing the human issues affecting the caribou rolleyes
Also the wolves were hunting live stock. But the farmers could just get proper fencing to protect their animals. If the farmers can’t afford proper fencing they actually have a guy fundraising over there just for the farmers (to indirectly help the wolves). Yet they still kill the wolves.

Apparently the world's overpopulated.
By humans, of course. It's like whenever something goes wrong with the world, it's humans' doing. Now this isn't an anti-human post. I don't hate very human because they're destroying the environment. Not to say we don't. Sometimes I wonder if this is the path of every species. I mean, if humans were to die out and another creature were to become dominant, evolving over millions of years, would they end up destroying the world too?
Well, that's if we don't blow ourselves up before then.
I do "have" a religion, but I believe that if we want to make a change in the world, we have to get up and do it ourselves. Religion can help. It can make people do good things. Or it could do just the opposite. More to the point, we can't just rely on religion to do things for us.
The human race could be related to a virus. One could say that we've infected the entire world and we're killing it. One could say we just don't stop multiplying, one could say there's no cure. I think it's just in our instincts to do that sort of thing. People walked at first, then they built bicycles to make the job easier. Then they built cars which pollute the atmosphere - it's just like that. There's an idea, we improve the idea and that's okay, then we improve it too much. And over a long period of time, it hurts more than it helps.
Good on the people who make conscious actions to save the planet. But there'll always be others who don't give a damn, and I don't know if there's much we can do about them.

Shiloh; few hunters are not aware that Defenders has a program that will reimburse a farmer for any livestock loss due to a wolf. It has turned a few wolf-haters around. I agree that it's ridiculous to put punishment on the animals for something we have done ourselves. Did the wolves intentionally decrease the caribou population or kill livestock? No. I can see it now.
Wolf A: "Hey, look at that juicy caribou sitting over there. Hey, there aren't enough of them around; wanna go decrease their numbers some more?"
Wolf B: "Nah, I think I'm going to kill this calf for the sole purpose of pissing Farmer Bob off."
I mean, seriously. How do people justify their actions? "Oh, no, we've contributed to declining numbers of species, but hell, it can't just be us! Let's kill those pesky wolves. Yeah, let's place the blame on them. I mean, they're only here to annoy us and kill things for no reason. They don't really eat the things they kill to survive."
Poodle: Thanks for the light shed on a rather dismal topic. After reposting this on my blog on my MySpace page, I added a little paragraph about how I realized how negative and pessimistic I was being. I know there are several good things that happen on this planet every day. Unfortunately, looking in the face at so many negative things at once makes one want to scream. As for another creature dominating the world, before humans, nothing dominated save dinosaurs or other predators. They certainly weren't complaining about religion or harmful carbon emissions. However, we evolved to have more complex brains and thinking patterns than these animals I speak of. But shouldn't that make us want to take care of them rather than see their demise? I understand that there are millions of people who are in it to help animals and see a better world. But apparently, based on the news I just received, it's not going so well on other ends.
Religion is a blessing and a bane. I completely agree that it has had a profound positive impact on many things. However, people expect it to solve their problems, make their decisions, and judge others by it. I think I'm referring to two different groups here, on both extremes, but that's another topic.
I see how you're agreeing with me, and pointing out the opposite side of the spectrum is making me less angry, though between the time I wrote that and now, I've calmed down considerably. I know nothing will probably be done, and complaining about it won't help matters. But it's just a sad reality that has hit me, and it really annoys me that these things happen. Like I said, it makes me rather ashamed at times to be what I am, but I am proud of who I am, as well as others.

Don't ever hate humans. That kind of thinking disgusts me. Yes, we have hurt the Earth. We've hurt a lot of things. But think about what we can do. We evolved from weak, useless animals with no natural defenses. We used the power of our minds to give ourselves the claws and teeth we lacked. We taught ourselves art, architecture, literature, advanced government, and many would say we created religion when the world seemed to make no sense at all.
Look at your pets. See how happy and healthy they are? Have you seen the advanced foods that have lengthened their lives and made their bodies far stronger than they could have been in the wild? Have you ever studied the incredibly advanced medical care availiable to them? Do you have any idea that Vet school is actually more complex, difficult to get into, and austere than doctorates for our own physical care?
Read a classic novel. Dive into the beautiful prose and turn of phrase. We took language, originally just a way to basely communicate, and made it flow like the elements and the turning of the stars themselves. We've invented deep artistic expression when no other species could comprehend the nature of a picture. Now African Grey parrots and great apes have learned and can understand what we have taught them.
Most of the pollution on the Earth was from the Industrial Revolution--one short burst of irresponsibility did in fact ruin much of the Earth. But, we were in the infancy of this science and are now taking steps to counteract it. Architecture, manufacturing, textiles, plastics, and others are taking steps to counteract the mistakes of the past. Styrofoam is now largely banned and where it's not it's no longer used by most people.
The brilliance, art, compassion, and beauty of humanity is so often overlooked by pessimists. The news broadcasts only the worst. Advocacy groups ignore all of the things we're doing to change. Even this current atrocity is being fought against. Genetic engineering, cloning, selective breeding, and other methods are being used to help endangered species and even ressurect exctinct ones.
We are changing. We are working. We're doing out best to help. Hating humanity is bizarre and it pisses me off. I don't mean to be rude, but hating your fellow man won't do jack s**t to help the Earth. Recognizing the beauty and brilliance we are all born with and USING IT TO HELP are all we can do. Insulting, throwing red paint, harassment, and all that radical bullshit DOES NOT HELP A DAMNED THING.
Ugh. I'm sorry. It just pisses me off.
EDIT: I read the rest of the thread (yes, I posted without reading. Sorry. I got mad.) and I'm not bitching at Alinea. I just see this "waaah humans are so bad" crap all the time and it drives me crazy. There are whole subcultures actually denying being human and ragging on all of the issues. It just bugs me so much. I'm not talking about Alinea's words, they're not as bad as the stuff I'm talking about, but some statements smacked of that philosophy that I hate so vehemently.

Wow, I didn't mean to set you off the deep end, Auf. sweatdrop My apologies.
While my post came out rather anti-human, it was not my intention to come across that way. I was moreso referring to the people in my first paragraph, the people who are guilty of those atrocities, and later, the people in another paragraph. I completely agree that the human race has made things better in some aspects and has a great deal of positive things attributed to it. I was a bit angry when I posted that, and my feelings came out a little biased because of my temper.
I don't mean to focus on the negative things like I did, but that's how it came out. However, I still stand by what I said, I just wanted to clear up some confusion.

I did kind of go crazy, I apologise. It's the one thing guaranteed to upset me. I try not to rant and rave, preferring instead to do something about it. If it really bugs me I usually just privately whine about it to my boyfriend. I got caught in a particularly foul mood though and I'm sorry.

aufstandkind I try not to rant and rave, preferring instead to do something about it. Quoted for truth. I don't like sitting around complaining either, but there's a point on both sides. It does suck that people sometimes seem to lack regard for animals, but honestly I've seen more people helping than hurting.

The real problem is not the whole species (the curse of generalizing), it's the morons in power. You can count on the little people to be in charge, but unfortunately we're set up to elect the most power-hungry, caniving, blood-curtling fiends to powerful positions. As some philosopher said, "power absolute corrupts absolute." It's really screwy that the people who have the resources to do what's right are most often finding more money which they will use for basically nothing--EXCEPT, of course, to get more money and to screw up Earth EVEN MORE.

66% is an extremely steep cull for a native species, especially one that's just been taken off the list. They would do better to simply take out verified offenders[ individuals that have been observed to cause problems amongst livestock] instead of wiping out whole packs and on that massive scale.
