Hi gang,

I've seen all or almost all of the Chris Eccleston episodes, but not any of the David Tennant ones, so I bought the DVD of the whole 2nd season. I've seen all the episodes and I must say that Love & Monsters is the absolute worst episode. I'm sorry, but I"ve always liked the scenes that the doctor is in. And he's hardly in this episode at all.

Am I right in this? Tell me if you agree or disagree.

I watched the second season online, and I must say I couldn't sit still for even five minutes while watching Love And Monsters. I kept being distracted. And that never happens to me when I watch DW.
I doubt I need to point out the fact I ended up not watching it all.

So, yes. I agree with you. L&M was horrible.

And another vote for Love And Monsters.

Mind you, I rewatched it just after getting the box set and I actually found myself laughing at a bit of it, so give it a chance. I think that episode is what's called a "Grower"!

It's still not up to RTD's usual standard though.

L&M was pretty bad. I don't think any other episode can top that for worst episode of the season.

I heard L&M was a throwaway episode as a part of a create-an-alien contest, and the winner got their alien put into an episode of Doctor Who. Is that true?

Well, yes and no. There was a contest to create an alien that would be in an episode of Doctor Who, and that was the episode. The fact that the Doctor and Rose are hardly in it is because they had to film Army of Ghosts/Doomsday back-to-back with L&M, and so they intentionally created a plot from on onlooker's POV. They were researching the Doctor, so focus more on them and less on him so that AoG/DD would be up to snuff in terms of completion and quality. They had to basically just 'throwaway' that episode in order to get such a good 2 part ending.

It was an interesting episode, though, I'll give it that. It gives the POV of the thousands and millions of people the Doctor has touched throughout his lives, and its kind of refreshing. The companions are usually brought along and everything gets wrapped up for them, but not for the bystanders.

But the show is called Doctor Who, Not Elton whatever-it-was. D: And what was up with the blob thing eating the Moaning Myrtle-chick? I don't know why they even bothered.

Although the seemingly-parody of YouTube in the beginning made me chuckle.

xDDD

Without a doubt, "Love and Monsters" was the weakest of all the eps. It seems to be thrown together (and probably was since Stephen Fry's ep was slated for then but he was unable to complete it).

But, to me, bad Who is better than no Who at all. smile

Call me an undying devotee to the underdogs-- but I really REALLY liked 'Love and Monsters'. I laughed *a lot*, because they did such a good job at sort of poking a little fun at fangroups- and I have to say- it was a terribly funny look at that sort of thing. From my perspective- it was a cute sort of homage to fandoms- and I loved it. I thought Elton was a warm and loveable character- and his 'speech' to Jackie towards the end (about watching tv really loudly and getting cheered up) made me smile to no end.

To be honest- I'd have to say I thought 'Fear Her' was a little weaker plotwise. I mean, I enjoyed it- don't get me wrong, (we're talking about the worst of the best when it comes to DW)- but yeah I, for one- really loved LaM. smile

I probably can't deny that Love And Monsters was the worst episode - but I would like to put up a bit of defence for it.

Even though it is not what I would call Doctor Who, I WAS really enjoying the episode - up until Peter Kay stepped into it. It was only him as that monster, in that terrible fat suit with that terrible hair running along the street cackling and saying all those terrible lines, that was the major downfall.

Other than him the characters were likeable, the plot of them hunting for the Doctor but getting distracted by fun and frolics was loveable and struck a chord with me as a Doctor Who fan, I got pulled into the mini love-stories, loved watching the 'youtube video diary' bits and I didn't even mind Jackie's role in it. It was only Peter Kay, from the moment he started to display alien tendancies, that let it down.

I even like the Scooby Doo chase at the beginning. Very Seventh/Second Doctor I thought.

Actually, it was The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit that was double banked with Love And Monsters. Those were also the last episodes filmed, with Billie's last scene being the "Stuff of legend" scene.

As to the Abzorbaloff, it is true that there was a competition to create a Doctor Who monster. It was run by the BBC children's programme Blue Peter and won by nine-year-old William Grantham.

Oh, ok. Makes sense, though. They wanted to get the two-parter done correctly, so stick Love and Monsters as sort of a side-view episode. I did like the episode more than Fear Her, but that Absorbaloff was ridiculous....that's what got me annoyed, and also the line of "we have a love life" between the guy and the girl's face in concrete. Very disturbing.

Yeah, most of the episodes had something in it I didn't like, but it's generally only small things that they throw in to please kiddies and stuff (girl in the fireplace, when he jumps through the window on the horse... xp )

But in general I'd have to agree with most people that Love and Monsters was the worst. Just ... the monster and the fart jokes and th... yeah. You know.

The fart jokes were annoying enough with the Sliveen (sp?), so why bring them *back* ??? confused

I didn't hate L&M except for one bit.

the abzorbaloff.... didnt have a name, but claimed to be from clom, which is supposedly the sister planet to raxicoricofallipatorius (spelled that out of my head)

yet the doctor had no idea what he was... I dunno

whatever.

I reeeeeeeally didn't like tooth and claw, I dunno, were wolves just dont do it for me.
