Preparations for a Fiery Grave

Smoke and smoldering piles of ash.
All of my plans gone in a flash.
But now is not a time to weep.
A chute deployed, yet I sleep.

Red and white and black, oh my!
That one hated verb, DENIED!
And to those that aided me in flight:
Mission Over. Fish did not bite.

What is this? A Revelation?
Or just my seeping trepidation?
The shakes and shivers, a devil's glee.
Well... now I don't have to pee.

Watch me as I float in sky.
Please, never let me die.
Let me make it to the ground,
I'll give it another go around.

The missiles were fired, the damage done.
I'm afraid my old bird will never meet the sun.
But give me some time, and a helping hand.
And her fate will not be in the desert sand.

The diamond formation, that still flies.
Searching through the gray winter skies.
Still I do join in the flight o'er.
Searching for that illusive score.
