Okay, I've noticed that some people here are giving out their "magickal" or "Wiccan" names in addition to their real/legal/given ones. Does Wicca require its adherents to take on a new name? Or is this just a personal preference? Please keep in mind, I'm wondering, not attacking. I know a guy who legally changed his name to Tronster, so I have no room to point fingers.

Requirement? Nah.
Although within some circles there was a semi-private one taken during initiation for just the coven or just the gods. Also, there is a practice of parents giving their kids a secret name used just between the parent and the gods.
These are all preferences. In the pagan community a lot of folks have other names that they use with other pagans.
I tend to just use my own name.

The practice of choosing a "magikal name" or "Craft name" started gaining popularity among the less reputable Wiccan authors. Most Pagans don't really bother from what I've seen, but many starting Wiccans (or fluffy bunnies) choose a name because thats what their told to do in several books.
In all honesty, I think its kind of pretentious. Its ok if you only use it during magic work or in your coven, but when you start introducing yourself as "Artemis Moonfeather SkyLark" to non-Wiccans/Pagans, it just makes you look like you are either a few 2x4s short of a Home Depot or that you have a big ego.
With that said, I don't think online names are the same as "magick" ones. Its just a name we give...and yes, they can sound pretentious cause let's face it, its online. I don't introduce myself to people in real life as Iolitefire. Hell, the only reason I chose Iolitefire as my screen name is because the name ILoveManBooty was already taken.

Personally, my given name has never, ever fit me and I didn't feel I'd be dishonoring my parents by doing so, I would have it legally changed. I've always had other names for myself and when I discovered Neopaganism, I can't say I adopted any new ones specifically for magical practice. I've made a few more aliases for the Pagan forums I participate in, but that's about it.

Yvaine Ditto. ...Man booty, huh? Damn straight. I could've tried manass, but manbooty is much more fun to say. I understand the need to change birth names though. I hated my middle name a lot so I ended up getting it changed legally. The old one pops up now and again but what are you going to do, eh?

Magical names are by far not a necessity. I have one, but I still go by my real name for spells. I only really use the name Sorrowsong as a magical name when I'm speaking to myself. It's like jumping into the mind of Sorrowsong, who is me giving advice to myself, or looking at my Self to see if I have been overlooking myself.
I have nicknames that friends call me, just because they do. Another one is Sanguia, and another is Janie.
But no, it's not necessary. And if you ever hear anyone tell you that telling your name to someone will bring harm to you or that person, it's not true. Don't believe it. That will only happen if you program your name to do so.

I have a name that I use as everything, and that's Blue Jewel. I use it in real life, and online. Blue Jewel has become my name. I even have it copyrighted for my photography. Blue Jewel Photography.
However, as an author, I have learned the ability to carry many names. I have many names, and when one name fails, I create another. Lets say I sent two or three stories to a publisher under the name of Mark Twillis, and he rejected them or published them, but they failed. The next one I sent in, would need to be under a different name as he already knows the other one, and thinks that person isn't a great author or has lost him money. Then, let's say I get a story that he likes or makes him a lot of money. The next one I sent in, he would have that story as a higher consideration as he already made money off the previous one. Make sense?
As for what Andiela mentioned about parents giving thier children a secret name, my mother did that. Only my mother, grandmother, sister and fiance know the full name.

I've shared this with Yvaine, but I figure I'll post for the benefit of all. Many esoteric circles stand by hiding names, as names have power, and you should NEVER give a person your True Name. Also, in many angelic and satanic summoning spells, you must know the True Name of the entity you are attempting to call.

More people do that than someone would think. It's giving yourself an uber pretentious name that annoys the hell out of me.

Ritter, my last name on here? It's a german noble title meaning Knight. I use cool stuff in latin like Lux Imperator and Fiat Umbra to be pretentious but have it cool sounding as well.

Or both. razz German names are fine since thats the culture of those parts of Europe. Giving yourself names like "LightFlash FyreBalm TigerEyes" just makes me think your trying to compensate for something razz
