Do Japanese people hates gay people, like how Americans hate gay people over here, or are Japanese people fine with gay people?

Having absolutely no experience of Japan, I can only tell you what I heard from others. Whether the information is accurate or not is beyond me.
Typically, I hear that the Japanese are more accepting of homosexuals in their society, mainly because of the religious influence. Because Buddhism (being the majority religion in Japan) is more open to people, society will tend to do the same as well.
Once again, this is only what I have heard.

With young people it's kinda the same as the west, most people don't care, but you still get the occasional idiot. I guess maybe people are just less used to seeing gay people, or maybe less educated on the matter. But there are gay clubs here and plenty of people that at least look gay. Generally if you're foreign they tend to be nice to you regardless, that's my experience although I'm not a gay man.

One time I saw a tv show about homosexuality in Japan. I don't really remember it much but the things I picked up from it were 1) alot of japanese still don't come out to their parents 2) although there are many gay bars in japan very few will let foreigners in 3) but for japanese youth it's the same to a little more tolerant than american youth

You can get info in this Thread I think it depends where, like in (Roppongi?) somewhere in Tokyo on Nichoume (二丁目)There's like 250 gay clubs there. (Or bars) But from what I was told Japan is pretty homophobic. Kinda sad, but yeah. I heard that sometimes you can get fired or kicked out of yor apartment just for being gay! surprised So depends? Just be careful, it isn't like Canada or whatever. You never know what may happen if you and your boyfriend walk down a street holding hands and kissing.

» the large object which gave birth to us all « I believe you speak of the fertility festival.(another part of the native religion of Shinto) Yes, on that day, many thing are distinctly Freudian, in nature. Even the chocolate treats, the children consume.

So I do not think yuo'd be able to avoid homophobia because of this. Sad really.

My boyfriend and I plan to visit Japan someday too. I'm not worried about the acceptance of homosexuality in Japan... I'm sure it's very much like America, in the city, you'll find more acceptance and the occassional homophobic jerk-off. Out in the country, in Japan, I've heard from my boyfriend who went to Japan for two months somewhere in Nagasaki and has been studying Japanese for four years... he told me most of the friends and people he talked with there, weren't even really aware of homosexuality because they weren't from the city. A few of them were weirded out about it and most of them didn't care. I believe you'll find Japan might be more accepting of Japanese gays, but a little put off by foreigners that are gay. It's my guess, I'm probably wrong... but you can only find out by experience, I truly hope that your future visit to Japan with your boyfriend will be a pleasant one.. If not, you have a fellow gay to pm and complain to. wink

It really just depends on where you go, just like in America. Being a foreigner though, makes you stand out a bit more. I know for a fact that some foreign teachers get love letters from both sexes all the time. Japan definitely has an interesting culture. sweatdrop Just don't sweat it too much. After all you're suppose to go and enjoy yourself, that's what vacations are for, right?

Buddhism has no problems with gays. I know this because I practice it. But people's prejudices are not alwaysaligned with their religion. So I do not think yuo'd be able to avoid homophobia because of this. Sad really. The only problem is that if you ask Japanese people about their religious beliefs, very few will tell you that they're Buddhist. Sure, they all go to see Buddhist rituals and participate in Buddhist holidays, but very few will admit to being Buddhist. Buddhism accepts everyone and anyone, Japanese however tend to be very conformist. If you don't conform to the norm you're strange and Japanese don't want to be strange, there's a lot of peer pressure involved there. Japan may be changing but many people still want to fit in and do what they feel is their social obligation which means getting married, having children and taking care of your parents and ancestors. Homosexuality simply doesn't fit into that and is thus still a taboo in Japan, more even, I'd say, than in the US. If you're a foreigner though it don't think it'll really matter that much, Japanese you see, are also very fascinated by things that defy the norm, hence all the yaoi manga and movies about social outcasts, not to mention all the wildly outlandish outlandish characters you see on TV there. razz In short, as long as you're not Japanese you're not expected to commit and contribute to society so you're excused if you're different. Got to love Japanese pragmatism. smile Besides, foreigners are weird anyway. razz
