Yeah, the charicters do have something to do with the popularity but I don't see any lovey dovey stuff at all, and the plots arent that great...in my opinion. Let me give you an example......they wasted what, 5 episodes on them taking a f!@#ing written exam? God, that was boooooooooooring (except for the Hinata part). And Ive seen some of the early episodes on toonami recently and do you remember when sasuke uses the fire ball thing? he looks like a really badly drawn frog. Some of the shots in the anime have no depth whatsoever. Even with all that said.....i still love the show
