Confession: When I completed 9th grade in 2002 I wasn't really into fandom. My brother downloaded all sorts of s**t from Kazza so I did the same. The only other anime fan I knew was one girl whose brother was the bootleg KING. Even when I started to get into fandom, most of the early anime forums I went to didn't condone liscensed fansubs. It was still my fault; I just never thought about if what I was doing was right or wrong. Deep in my heart, I must have knew.
I have the bad habbit of having seaver guilt trips, so I don't download many fansubs. I try to ask these questions of myself when consuming fansubs or scanalzations: 1. Would I buy this if it was licsensed? After a proper testing period, this question must be asked. If I wouldn't buy it, it's really stealing. 2. How likely is it to become liscensed? Most of what I read is very unlikely to be, so I don't have to worry about keeping track of it's copyrights.
If this makes no sense, I'm sorry; I didn't sleep well last night.

MTQ, don't feel bad. You were young and naive.
And I don't have this problem, because I don't really download anime or manga. It's too much of a pain. And if I ever do download anything, it's always in comic format. Bittorent is insane.
I too have a confession to made. I read most of the Naruto manga off the internet, even though I was quite aware that it was liscensed. To be fair, I didn't really see this as wrong at the time. And I did subscribe to the English version of Shonen Jump where they print it. And I'm still subscribed, out of guilt. And because my sister and I still like to read it. But I'm sure that the guilt part fits in somewhere. neutral

I don't download anime. I can't download period. Plus the fact that my dad can't handle me saying cuss words, let alone hearing me watch them. Anyway.
Before the FMA manga came out, I read it online. I didn't think it was wrong, because I'm rather stupid in that area. I don't, anymore...I still want to. >_>
Licensed=Download Links Bad. Unlicensed=OK

I have to admit that I have tried to download a few unliscensed anime and manga before, but I was only able to get Naruto and nothing else. I did try to download fansubs of Air and Bleach, but due to some technical problems my computer had, it was impossible. I know that doing this is wrong, so I try to stay away from the fansubbing sites as much as possible, and I'm trying to save up money for when they eventually release the Naruto dvd's.

Wow.. ^^; This is like the worst thing for me... >.>
I am unable to download fansubs on my own and I only get scanslations on my own. >.> I get fansubs from my friend the..... black underground queen.
See it'd be less fansubs and scanslations if I was ABLE to buy them. I'd ask my friends to buy them and I'd pay them back when they give it to me or I borrow. I can't buy it MYSELF. T__T
And all over I feel so awfully guilty.

I don't let that stop me. surprised It's funny, because whenever he blindy acusses me of downloading things, I haven't in months. I dislike downloading now, I only do it if there is something I really want to read/see, I don't think it will be liscnesed in the future, and if it's manga, I can't get online scans. It's important to realize it's not always as simple as liscensed or unliscensed. There are many cases where only part of a franshise is localized for North America. Dince the porpous of fansubs really is to promote a franchise that's not avalible in America, wound't fansubs or scans of those serise be stealing?

I'm limited in my downloading ability due to the fact that my connection is suck. It's pretty much impossible to follow more than a few series at once without leaving my line maxed out all day and night, while really pissing off my ISP.
Most of you know that I'm extremely outspoken about bootlegs and downloading licensed series. And, for the most part, I hold myself to that standard. Yeah, it sucked giving up on AMG! TV... Starship Operators... SunaBozu... but that's just how it is.
However, I am struggling with guilt, now.
I've been downloading Eureka 7. crying
Which, really, brings up a good question. The purpose of fansubs is indeed to expose a series to as wide an audience as possible, to build interest... I'd say a lot of that is just letting people get a feel for the series. However, now that more and more show are being 'pre-licensed'... does this leave any room for compromise?

My friend is still downloading Gundam Seed Destiny... and Basilisk is still coming out in fansubs even though both are licensed.
Which surprised me that Basilisk was licensed so fast. Only about 4 or so episodes and it's licensed already.

A big problem is that even though most fansubs and scans stop being produced after they are liscsed, but they countinue to be distributed. If I was a scanalator, I would only do online viewing because it's harder for others to distrubute other copies of it.

I'll download the episodes/comics if they're available... but I tend to stay away from licenced material. There is one exception (isn't there always?), that being the new Ah! My Goddess TV series. However the company isn't cracking down on that one, and the thinking is that they know the series will sell well when it's put out in the US.
Ultimately, my "rule" is as follows: If it's available on the shelves, I won't download it.

The thing with online viewing is that it takes up so much bandwith... >.> The major places most people go to find scans and fansubs don't distribute licensed material. But you know... what's up with the RAWS then? XD I mean... yeah... but those are like released still most of all the time.

I was subscribed(and still am) to Shonen Jump but dl the manga just to find out what's happening lately. They are way ahead of us and I'm not very patient. I didn't subscribe out of guilt I just love SJ. I have every issue since the first on e was released. I dl manga and anime, but if it comes over here I stop(Naruto being exception for reasons I just explained) and I do buy stuff when it's licensed when I can. Can't wait for the english Naruto dvds to be released. pirate
