Skin color Lightly tanned during the summer, but he's the type that burns at least once before tanning and tends to be a bit paler in winter, simply because he's not out in the sun as much.
Hair color: Red-brown, has sort of orangey/red highlights when he's out in the sun

Background: For the first five or six years of his life, Zach lived on the streets of Chicago. No one, including him, remembers who his real parents are or exactly when he was born. He was found in the proverbial dumpster by one of the older members of a street-gang and raised as a sort of "little brother". Being so small, he was usually set outside one of any number of shops and told to stay there and beg money off passersby.
One day in the middle of winter, an older lady passed by him going out the door. She was wearing a fur coat and the little boy had never seen anything like it before. Unthinking, he reached out to touch the fur, accidentally tugging on the coat in the process. The lady looked down at him and asked what he was doing out there all alone. He didn't answer, simply staring at her with large blue eyes. Her gaze softened then and she leaned over to pick him up, and took him home with her. A few days later, she formally adopted him and took him back home with her.
They lived in a very small town, just a little dot on the map - and sometimes not even that, depending on the map. The main highlight of the weekend was for the teenagers to go and meet up at the one coffeehouse on the square and "hang out" there, and then drive their cars around said square in endless circles, calling to each other out open windows and honking their horns. As it turned out, this picking up of "stray" children was a sort of habit of the lady, who simply told them to call her "Mrs. Williams". If the children had names before she adopted them, she gave them new names. At the time Zach came into the household, Mrs. Williams had two other children, another boy about his age named Daniel and a younger girl named Rachel.
Mrs. Williams ran her little mini-orphanage out of a small house in the town, removed from most technology and things going on in the outside world. She took a holiday trip to Chicago (the closest large city) every few months to go shopping and eat at fine resteraunts, but that was it. She never took the children on these trips, instead getting a friend of hers to check up on them and more or less leaving them on their own.
Mrs. Williams was also very religious and sought to save the children's souls that she had "rescued" as well as their physical bodies. Every time the doors of the one small church in town were open, they were there. The Bible, God, and Jesus were drilled into the childrens' heads at every opportunity. Daniel took to the teachings as if he'd been born knowing them ... and Rachel was willing enough to go along with it, being a sweet-natured child. But Zach ... Zach believed there was more to the world. He believed in magic.
By the time Zach was around thirteen years old, he was looking for the magic that he knew existed. He'd believed there was such a thing since he was very young, before Mrs. Williams found him. He wasn't sure why, but he just ... knew it was out there, even though he'd never seen any himself. As it turned out, there was a small group of teens and pre-teens in the town who also believed in the "occult". Their version though ... wasn't the best of versions. They were, more or less, what we might call "demon-worshippers". They met one night a week and "prayed" to several entities they called by name and beseeched them for power and knowledge. Zach met a few of them in school and started to hang out with them. Mrs. Williams tried to prevent these visits, despairing when Zach started to wear his hair longer and came home with his ears and then an eyebrow pierced.
It was from this cult that Zach found out about the aliens. The teens believed that these aliens were somehow the physical incarnations of the spirits they had been calling upon. Several of them began talking about trying to find the aliens ... to meet them. Zach was careful never to talk about such things at home, or at least not in front of Mrs. Williams. Daniel, though, he shared all of it with. Daniel was like a true brother to him, and the two of them talked about everything.
Around this time was when the plague began spreading like wildfire. Several of the cult members got sick and died - but their deaths were celebrated, as they would be "joining the spirits". Zach, though, was horrified and started to back away from the group. He stopped going to the meetings and avoided any of them that he saw otherwise. He'd known for a while now that what they thought they had found ... was not what he was seeking.
And then, Daniel began to get sick. Zach recognized the early signs of it in his brother and tried to get Mrs. Williams to take him to a doctor, to do something, anything. But the one he'd never truly thought of as his mother refused, believing that faith would heal Daniel if he was meant to live. It soon became obvious that he was not, and Zach began to think that maybe he would die too. But he didn't, and soon Mrs. Williams turned upon him in her own grief and pain, blaming him and his "friends" for carrying the "demonic" disease into her household. Zach responded by retreating farther into a sort of shell and almost never leaving his room. Rachel tried to make peace between them, but she had never been as close to Zach as Daniel had and didn't really know how.
School had been canceled as the alien scare grew worse, parents advised to keep their children at home and lock all doors and windows. But Zach still talked to some of his other friends from school ... and this was how he eventually learned of the Shinkami School of Saviors.
Personality: Perhaps the best way to describe someone's personality is to point out what they like and don't like and how they react to certain situations. One thing Zach absolutely hates is not knowing what is going on. If someone is trying to keep something from him, he will most likely do all that he can to find out what that something is. He always hated never being told what the rest of the gang was doing when he was younger - and he hated the fact that Mrs. Williams tried to hide what was going on in the rest of the world from him and the others later on.
He also hates confrontation and is not at all used to it. Though Mrs. Williams could be very passionate about her faith, she never actively argued with the children about it and stopped any arguments they had in the beginning stages. Even the cult he hung out with for a while was a fairly stable group, as such things went, and there wasn't much internal fighting there.
Zach is the type of person that tends to "go with the flow" more than fight things, especially when he's in a situation where he knows he's not likely to win. However, at the same time ... once he has his mind or heart set on something, he can be incredibly stubborn. He's more likely to be a follower than a leader - though if need-be, he will and can lead.
One major flaw in his personality is a tendency to blame himself for things happening that have little or nothing to do with him. This stems from what happened to Daniel and Mrs. Williams subsequent blaming him for it. Though the cult members had claimed it was the work of the spirits they worshipped, he knew such things as that ... didn't really exist. And so he came to blame himself for carrying the disease from the members of the group to his home.
Interest: Nature/magic. The town that Zach lived in was situated in the middle of a vast forest and he would often sneak away to spend time alone under the huge, old trees. Even though he tried to find the magic he knew existed in the cult ... he always felt closer to it, somehow, in the forest.
Hobbies: Throughout his life, Zach has always been interested in drawing. He doodled things when he was young, one of his favorite thing to do after schools was to color in line drawings his teachers gave him. As he got older, he sketched out things he saw in real life, sort of teaching himself. Eventually, he also tried to draw things out of his head, fantasies and dreams - strange creatures and landscapes. Mrs. Williams, having before been proud of his drawings, found these later attempts disturbing and began to discourage the hobby. Zach kept drawing, however, and simply hid his drawings away, only showing them to Daniel.
He also quite enjoys reading, and rented nearly every book from the library in town, particularly enjoying fantasy and science fiction novels. These sorts of books spoke to the part of him that believed magic existed, and he would often make up stories of his own in his head - though he never wrote them down.
Talent: Zach is a very visual learner ... and learns and memorizes things in this way quite easily. For example, if you simply explain to him how to get to a place, he's likely to get hopelessly lost - but if you draw him a basic map of the area and show him a starting and ending point, he can memorize it and get to just about anywhere without having to look at said map twice.

Jaden :: Jaden seems pretty cool. A little spacey and out of it sometimes but hey! He can actually speak Elven! And that = cool.
