Soot had wandered away from the field of flowers since they'd turned brown and died off from the cold in the past few months. His ashen trail spreading out behind him turned the white powder that had fallen from the sky into a rather nasty looking mess. It seemed that he was after something with his piece of colored star candy clutched in his mouth, but who could really tell when it was just a little Soot walking around? They weren't exactly the brightest of kitsu, right?
K'Yoh was right behind Soot, taking careful steps around the black dust he left behind while trying to avoid the deeper spots of snow. She would much rather have been back curled up someplace where they'd already cleared the cold stuff away, but she wasn't going to simply lay around all day by herself. Instead of trudging behind Soubi, who seemed to be in the worst mood today, she had chosen to follow the little Soot into the forest. "I hope that you're after something and not just running around for the joy of it," her ears flickered down briefly, "It's cold."

(I'm going to be playing with colors for Atae, I haven't picked one yet.)
Soot hopped through the snow, jumping from one to the next of the footprints some larger Kitsu had made earlier in the day. Soot was delighted with the strange substance. It might be cold, but cold effected Soot differently than most.
Atae padded along behind Soot, less concerned about avoiding Soot's trail than with keeping up. She didn't know her way around here and was less than pleased with the thought of getting lost. They topped a rise and Atae thought she saw two other kitsu down a bit farther. And one of them... was another Soot? How... strange.

Of a sudden, Soot stopped in his tracks and chirped, barely catching his star before it hit the snow. Ears pricking up, he lifted his small nose into the air and took another few breaths. Soot chirped again, this time much louder. There was someone he recognized! He spun in a small circle, trying to see the one he was smelling. But, unfortunately, he just wasn't big enough.
K'Yoh froze as soon as Soot began to act up, her own ears dropping as a bit of fear rose. What was wrong with the Soot to be acting so strangely? Was there something out there that they needed to get away from? She looked around quickly, eyes landing on the pair in the distance. Freezing where she was, K'Yoh couldn't decide whether they needed to get away, or simply stay put. Strangers weren't always dangerous, after all. But sometimes, they were.

Soot spotted the other two and squeeked before trotting down the slope. Soot hit a slick spot and ended up sliding most of the way down. Soot stood, shook Sootself, and bounced over to the other Soot, tails wagging cheerfully.
Atae followed after, much more carefully and quite a bit slower. Once she reached level ground she crept closer, peering curiously at the other Soot and the larger kitsu. "Soot... you know them?" Her voice was very soft, and she actually seemed nervous about speaking.
Soot squeeked and pointed at the other Soot to confirm that Soot knew this one, if not the other one. Soot actually felt kind of bad now, Soot had forgotten for a moment how nervous and shy Atae was around strangers.

If K'Yoh and Atae seemed to be upset at seeing other kitsu, Soot paid no attention at all to it. He was, in fact, oblivious. He stopped his spinning as the other Soot that he knew and the small kitsu came down the slope, hopping onto his hind legs to get a better view at their approach before chirping again to them in greeting and promptly toppling over backwards. Equally ignorant of the even bigger mess he had left in the snow, he was back on all four paws in an instant with his own mass of tails wiggling behind him with excitement. Someone else to play with!
K'Yoh backed away a bit as the other Soot tumbled down the slope towards them and apporached rather quickly, her ears drawing down even further with her mounting unease. The shy manner in which the younger female approached, however, seemed to reassure the adult slightly. "Uhm, hello," she offered quietly. Her own tails swayed a bit behind her from her nervousness.

Soot bounced up and down and spun in glee, incidentally spraying snow everywhere. Soot pounced upon friend-Soot and squeeked merrily before running over to the side and rolling up some snow. They didn't have a ball or anything, maybe they could make one? Soot kicked the small snow ball experimentally, and it broke apart, but a good chunk of it still flew over and hit Atae squarely between the eyes. Soot's ear drooped as low as they'd go and Soots eyes grew wide. Soot was absolutely mortified, Soot hadn't wanted to throw snow at Atae!
Atae just stood there, dumbfounded, as snow half-melted and dripped from her nose. She fought off tears, knowing Soot hadn't meant it, and tried wiping off snow and wiping her eyes at the same time. In the end she was laying on the ground with her paws covering her face and let out a small whine. Soot rushed over and nuzzled her until she looked up. "I'm ok..." She sat up. "Just... aim better next time." She teasingly kicked snow at her friend and looked back at K'Yoh. "I'm Atae..."

Soot was equally excitable and bouncy as his friend went about rolling snow, though he seemed more interested in trying to nudge what he could get on his nose into small piles. He watched with curiosity as the other tried to hit the snow at him, chirping lightly as the piece flew to hit the other kitsu in the face. His own ears flagged down, quickly realizing what it was that had been done wrong. It wasn't nice to hit people, even in play!
K'Yoh was about to say something about it being nice to meet others when Soot's snowball hit the younger female between her eyes. The adult seemed taken a bit aback, one paw raising off the ground and hinting at moving away out of confusion. Yet instead of bolting away, K'Yoh moved closer slowly. "Are you sure you're alright?" Despite the other's joking tone and her shyness, she was still worried. A young one was a young one.

Atae shuffled her paws nervously and blushed slightly. "I'm fine... really..." She experimentally made a small pile of snow next to one the other Soot had made. "Can we... make something... with this?"
Soot shrugged and piled some more snow on top of Atae's pile to make it bigger than the other pile and tried to think of something else to do with snow.

K'Yoh managed a gentle smile, though it seemed a little forced around the edges. She hadn't meant to embarass the other kitsu, but she also didn't want her to be hurt. Her eyes moved to look at the piles that Atae and the two Soots were working on, tails swishing lightly behind her. Delicately, she took a seat in the snow to watch the three play. She wouldn't leave Soot out here by himself, never really wanting to admit that it was more her who needed looking after.
The Soot chirruped as more snow was added to his and Atae's pile, staring intently at the little mounds for a few moments. Apparently loosing interest, or perhaps forgetting what it was that he had been doing, Soot decided to make a dash and try to bulldoze the two over. With a rather odd squawk - it was cold! - he ended up buried from his nose to his front paws with his hind ones scrambling in the air behind him. It was a little deeper than he'd thought, apparently.

Soot blinked in surprise and then busied Sootself with digging out Soot's Soot-friend. Being buried in snow couldn't be comfortable.
Atae backed up so as not to get buried by Soot's heroic efforts, and having no one else to interact with turned to K'Yoh. "Why are you out here?..." she asked shyly, nervously stroking one forepaw with the other.

With the other Soot's help, he was able to get all four paws back on the ground in something similar to the right order. The whole area, however, was no longer white but black. Continually oblivious to the changes that he made to the environment around him, Soot chirped in thanks for his freedom.
Her ear canted to the side as Atae spoke to her, head turning to follow it. She'd been paying attention to the two Soots, wanting to make sure that her Soot got out alright, and was a little surprised that the younger female wasn't joining in with them. "Soot wanted to get out, I suppose. I just didn't want him wandering around alone." K'Yoh's voice was quiet and reserved, though she wasn't as openly afraid as she had been earlier. Atae was such a young kitsu, it was hard for K'Yoh to imagine her as anything like a threat or someone to be afraid of.
Ignoring the two females, Soot tried to shake the remaining snow off of himself, sending grey puffs of ash into the air along with flying bits of the white stuff. Grinning as much as his little muzzle would allow and with his tails waving in the air behind him, he attempted to pounce on his friend.

Atae nodded. "That's... nice of you, to watch him." She realized she was rubbing her paws together after a moment and set her other paw back on the ground. A moment later her tails started swishing slowly through the snow instead. "I just didn't want to be alone today..."
Soot had turned to check on Atae, Soot's tails wagging slightly to see her trying to make a friend, when Soot's friend pounced Soot. Soot squeeked in surprise and wiggle-rolled away before bouncing back to Soot's feet and pouncing at the pouncer with a little Soot-grin on Soot's face.

Nodding her head slowly with some degree of empathy - K'Yoh certainly didn't want to be alone - the small smile that began on her muzzle wavered wider in an attempt to be more friendly. She really was trying, at the very least, just like the other kitsu. "I'm sure that he'd be fine without me," she chuckled hesitantly, ears sliding back a bit out of self-consciousness as she spoke.
A squawk squeezed its way out of Soot's gaping mouth, his grin still very much in place despite the sound. The other's retaliation had taken him off-guard and he'd ended up flat down in the snow again. Chirping to the other Soot, he batted at him with a paw.

Atae nodded hesitantly, tails still swishing gently to expel some of her nervousness. "They... do seem to be able to look after themselves. I... sort of envy that... a bit."
Soot was, for the moment, completely distracted from Atae. Soot dodged Soot's friend's paw and hopped back, Soot's front end ducked down while Soot's back end remained standing in the "ready to play or pounce" posture. Soot's tails waggled enthusiastically before Soot launched Sootself at Soot's friend again, intent on pouncing him into the snow a little bit more. It had been kind of fun to dig him out.
