BACKGROUND Married to a man she didn't love, Petch's mother fled the Northern Water Tribe before he was ever born and found her way to the Earth Kingdom. With little to support her and her son but the few skills she had learned growing up, the pair traveled along the Earth Kingdom's waterways working as fishers. Petch's mother did everything for him that she could, training him in all the waterbending that she had been taught herself, but as she was a woman, she had never been trained in anything but the healing arts.
Though the mother and son were extremely close when he was younger, as Petch progressed through his teenaged years, things became increasingly strained between the pair as Petch dealt with teenaged rebellion as well as a serious inferiority complex when he compared himself to the rough and sturdy Earth Kingdom boys his own age. A year or so ago Petch and his mother had one final blow out argument and he struck out on his own with a small gang of boys his own age. None of the boys have much purpose or direction in life other than 'adventure and enjoying their freedom', thus Petch has spent a fair amount of time lately traveling the Earth Kingdom and getting into scuffles with the locals.
Currently, Petch is just scraping to get by as he has his whole life.
PERSONALITY Petch has never been a terribly sociable sort. While not necessarily a mean person, it takes him a long time to open up to others and trust them, however once he feels comfortable with someone they've found a loyal friend until they prove otherwise. If Petch should feel betrayed by a friend, it is very difficult to win back his trust and he takes to holding grudges very easily. Generally, however, Petch is just on the grumpy side. He grumps quite a bit though those close to him have realized he's mostly just doing so for the sake of grumping and he shouldn't be taken seriously. Of course.. not being taken seriously just makes him grump more.
Growing up in a land full of boys who can throw boulders at each other when they're angry has left Petch with something of a complex. To make up for what he views as his own inadequacies, Petch has developed into a rather stupidly aggressive boy. It's a rarity that he doesn't end up in some sort of scuffle when he passes through a town because he purposefully seeks them out. He definitely has a chip on his shoulders.
