lay the apple on its side and cut it in half, you will see a five pointed star from the seeds with in it.

A quick definition would be a five pointed start (representing the five elements: earth, air, fire, water, and spirit) surrounded by a circle to show the neverending circle of life. It is often used in wicca as a tool, and often falsely associated with the devil or "dark/black" magick.

When I get home I'll type up the information my teachers gave me about it...
...but in the meantime, for a wee bit of merry trivia...
The five pointed star once at its place in Christianity as well, until more modern propaganda labeled it as evil. It was known as the Star of Bethlehem, worn, much like many Wiccans/Pagans, as a symbol of protection.
It's amazing the kind of information your 8th grade history teacher can offer you 6 years later...lol (tho' it's been 8 now since I've actually had her in class).

actualy, the cathlics used it i first! to represent the 5 wounds of crist. (dont ask me, i dont know what they are). then they went to a fish, then the cross. the pagans, had the cross first. celtic crosses, thats why theres a cricle in the center, for the energy. somewhere down the line we swiched. lol

Actually, there is no historical evidence that celtic crosses were ever used by Pagans at all. In fact, there is a famous legend about the Christian Saint Patrick during one of his sermons made the sign of the cross through the moon goddess' symbol and the celtic cross was made.
Now equal armed crosses, I can see.

The history of symbols is about as convoluted as any historical study can get. What it all comes down to is borrowing: two or more cultures/belief systems come in contact with eachother, borrow what they like and supress what they don't like. For example, the Celtic cross as a means of dominating the Pagan people of Ireland.
You see, the cross has been a powerful symbol long before the Christians, probably at it's most popular during the Roman times. The shape was associated with crucifixion, (a very popular Roman torture) and things that were associated with death, such as crucifixion nails were considered immensely powerful, so it only follows that the shape of the cross would have been powerful, too. So the Christians adopted this belief from the Romans. Later on, when the Christians began to colonize Pagan places like Northern Europe, they saw the Pagan symbol of the equal armed cross and adapted it to be associated with their religion. This is the same reason Easter falls on Mabon, why All Saint's Day follows Samhain, and Yule is conspicuously close to Christmas: it is easier to convert a bunch of Pagans if you make parallels between their beliefs and your own. The Celtic cross as we know it today is really a Catholic symbol. The equal-armed cross of Olde is fairly forgotten.
As far as the Pentacle, sources vary. No one can agree where it first showed up, or to whom it has first holy, but we can all agree that it is an important symbol to all. It shows up often in nature: apple cores, the sky-cycle of the planet Venus as seen from Earth, flowers, etc. No wonder it's been considered holy.
