I spent a week in Phoenix and Krispy Kreme dougnuts are all out of business throughout Arizona because of the "trans fat" issue. I am not sure if Washington is experiancing the same thing, but it all happened within a week in Arizona! Isn't that sad/scary!? Now what we choose to eat is now disappearing... our very rights are disappearing!

Oh yea, they were going to vote on New York banning trans fat foods from the city, dont know how it turned out though... But Krispy Kreme is doing fine up here, in fact... that sounds kinda good right now...

WTF is all this trans fat B.S. anyway? We never cared about the types of fats that were in our foods until just recently. The people that have been shoving the same fat-riddled crap down their throats for the last ten years are all of a sudden going, "Uhm... kay I don't know what that is. But it sounds bad and sounds like it could hurt me. :B" It's been the same for the last ten years, why would you stop now?

Seriously, WTF is going on?

The whole "fat" thing is so stupid. Who cares! Its peoples choice whether to eat the food and get fat.

The Issue
Scientific evidence has shown that dietary trans fats can increase your risk of developing heart disease. You can reduce this risk by choosing healthier foods that contain little or no trans fat.

Background
Fat is an important part of a healthy diet because it provides essential fatty acids and energy (calories). It also helps your body absorb Vitamins A, D and E.

Fats and oils are made mostly of fatty acids. There are four main types of fatty acids. Most fats and oils contain a mixture of all four types, but such mixtures usually have a higher proportion of one particular type of fatty acid.

The four main types of fatty acids are:
Polyunsaturated fatty acids - Many common vegetable oils (e.g., soybean, corn and sunflower oil), fatty fish (e.g., salmon, mackerel, smelt, herring and trout), fish oils, flaxseed, sunflower seeds, soybeans and some nuts (e.g., walnuts) contain a high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Monounsaturated fatty acids - Olive oil, canola oil, high oleic sunflower oil, avocados and certain nuts (e.g., cashews, pecans, almonds and peanuts) contain a high proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids.

Saturated fatty acids - Coconut, palm and palm kernel oils, animal fats (e.g., pork and beef), butter, cheese and other dairy products contain a high proportion of saturated fatty acids.

Trans fatty acids - These are found naturally in small amounts in certain foods (e.g., dairy products, beef and lamb). Also, small amounts of trans fats are formed during the refining of liquid vegetable oils (e.g., canola and soybean oil). Trans fats are also created when manufacturers use a process called "partial hydrogenation." This process turns liquid oil into a semi-solid form, such as shortening or margarine.

Food products made with fats or oils with a high proportion of saturated or trans fatty acids have a longer shelf life than products made with oils that contain a higher proportion of other fatty acids. Saturated and trans fatty acids also play a role in producing the textures and flavours that make many bakery products and snacks so tempting. For example, it is the saturated and trans fatty acids that give pastries that "melt in your mouth" feeling.

The Health Effects of Dietary Fats
In general terms, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids tend to lower your risk of heart disease. They are the healthier fats, and they should be included in your diet. Saturated and trans fatty acids are unhealthy fats because they tend to raise your risk of heart disease.

Trans fats do two things that raise the risk of developing heart disease:

Trans fats raise blood levels of so-called bad cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol). LDL-cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease.
Trans fats lower blood levels of so-called good cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol). HDL-cholesterol protects against heart disease.
Saturated fats also raise blood levels of "bad" cholesterol. However, at the same time, they also raise blood levels of "good" cholesterol.

Basically, people are concerned about trans fat, because it leads to problems with heart disease. Trans fats turn into clumps of lard in your blood vessels which can lead to a lot of heart diseases. Its mostly a concern for old adults.

If you don't care about what you eat and you don't care about dieing from a heart attack, then by all means go ahead and do what you want.

I just personally feel that the government is now telling us what we can and can't eat which I find wrong. What's next? We can't say certain words and stuff? You do know that the government already eliminated Habeas Corpus and passed a law allowing forms of torture 2 months ago... I bet not, because it was probably the most important under-reported story in our past century!

I can understand your argument. We like to have our freedoms, and the government forcing to tell us what to eat doesn't seem Constitutional.

Well, we've had the freedom of being able to eat whatever we want for a while now, and where has it gotten us? People are obese, and getting fatter earlier on in life. I mean honestly, all they're doing is keeping people from ingesting harmful fats. If you want to b***h and moan about not being able to clog up your ateries or pack on a few more pounds if you want to, you've got plenty of ammo to do that with the McDonalds and other fast food corporations that litter the country.
But if we're going to keep people from eating harmful foods, then why aren't we keeping people from doing other harmful things? Cigarettes for example. We have a right to do what we want to our bodies, but if you're going to abuse your body with harmful substances, I don't really see the point of people protesting something that might just be good for them.
Just my two cents. Go get fat off of Krispy Kremes and whatever crap you want. Smoke a cigarette for all I care. It's your own health you're throwing away.
