Sorry... i posted the same thing twice... But i guess i'll start anyonther new topic...

Did you have to take an exam for you your Band/ music class?... This year my school has all of the percussionists in one class period, and we had to take an exam... we had to be able to play the first 19 Rudiments from memory... and all 12 major scales in chromatic order. Not particularly hard... but by golly it's 10 minuets i could have used to... sleep or something.

At my old school performing at the Christmas concert was our exam grade. What happened to the good old days?

That'd probably be a good idea at my school. I mean, maybe its a waste of time for some people, but at my school a lot of people really need work on that stuff.

I didn't. But I was in the Guard. I DID have to take a Color Guard Final. A written exam & a performance exam.

Our band would definately benifit from percussion playing tests. You might think it a waste of time for percussion, but most of the percussionists in my band are snare/tenor players and can't read mallet music...so that would get 'em thinking about practicing instead of acting stupid. As for wind playing tests...we have them. They're called competencies.

Our first trimester competencies were all 12 major scales, all 12 nat. minor, 12 harmonic minor, 12 melodic minor, etc. and scale patterns playing and singing on Solfeg (do re me fa so...) and the All Northwest audition material.

This tri its excersizes from the Rubank books.

Haha our band exams consist of playing our instrument in band...

Last year, we HAD EASY questions!
The other band at our school had their teacher write the questions on the board...
"How do you spell TRUMPET?"

I agree that sometimes it's neccessary to have tests, but i'm just really angry that the percussionists had to take a test and the rest of the band didn't.. I mean, more that half of our freshmen (that's about 40% of the band) don't know there scales! Only about 2-3 percussionists don't know there scales, and ALL 3 of them are horn players and are gonna transfer back to the normal band class next semester. Its just sucks...
