ARASHI Interview: Myojo 09/2005
ARASHI - The destined confession..."In my case, I would do it this way!!"
"What would you do!?" A DESPERATE SITUATION!
Love problems Q&A
"What would you do!?" A DESPERATE SITUATION!
Love problems Q&A
You're in love with the same girl that your best friend is! What do you do?
Ohno: I would yield. Otherwise, i'd go together with my friend and ask her, "Which one of us do you like?"
Nino: I would give up.
Aiba: I would have a meeting with my friend and discuss about stuff like "which one of us should confess first?"
Sho: It can't be helped, can it? I would tell my friend that I will compete against him fairly using good sportsmanship.
Jun: But because of this, the girl I like shouldn't feel guilty about it.
When you aren't busy, your ex-girlfriend invites you out. What do you do?
Nino: If I'm free, I'd go.
Aiba: It depends on how I'm feeling at the time.
Sho: I think I'd normally go.
Jun: If I want to, I'll go.
Ohno: I'll go anywhere with her!
You accidentally let out a fart right in front of the girl you like! What do you do?
Ohno: I'd casually say, "Oops, I let out a fart." I wouldn't be very embarrassed.
Nino: Oh well. Because I don't really think much of it? (laughs)
Sho: I'd say, "Huh?! Oh no!" (laughs)
Aiba: I'd try to turn it into a compliment by saying, "wasn't that a great sound just now?" (laughs)
Jun: I'd turn red and apologize with a "sorry."
Your unrequited love is transferring to a far-away school. What do you do?
Jun: I really can't do it. I wouldn't confess my love. I think I'd give up.
Nino: I wouldn't do anything when she transfers. I'd give up.
Aiba: She'd probably end up leaving while i'm worrying and saying, "Oh no! What do I do?!"
Ohno: Last chance! I'd turn things around with one shot. There's no other option but confessing, right?
Sho: Well, there's always something else after.
The girl you like has been elected prom queen!(1) But the position of prom king hasn't been decided yet. What do you do?
Jun: I'd probably run for the position of prom king...I have to utilize this opportunity! (laughs)
Nino: Whatever...Run for prom king? I'd never do that!!
Aiba: What would I do? I don't think I could do it. I'd probably just watch from the crowd.
Ohno: I'd become a light that will always keep the spotlight on her!
Sho: In the manner of "Sekai no Chuushin de Ai wo Sakebu", I'd yell, "HELP ME PLEASE!" **
The girl you like is crying because her boyfriend dumped her. What do you do?
Nino: I wouldn't do anything, because there is no need to. My feelings for her and her break-up have nothing to do with each other.
Aiba: Oh man. I'd probably say, "it's okay!" I wonder if it's a good thing to say some kind words to her...It's probably best to leave her alone though.
Sho: I'd ask her, "What's wrong?" If she'll speak with me, I'll listen to her story. If she won't, I won't probe further.
Jun: I don't like to take advantage of someone's weakness but, I also hate to see the girl I like being sad so I'd comfort her.
Ohno: I'd say, "Go out with me!" Oh wait, is that not fair to her?
When you aren't around, your girlfriend messes around with your cell phone. (2) What do you do?
Sho: I would become irate.
Ohno: I first, I'd be shocked, because it's rude, you know? Then, I'd have no choice but to lose trust in her.
Nino: I'd say, "Isn't that my phone?" No matter the circumstances, that deed in itself is no good. I don't think I could go out with someone like that.
Aiba: I wonder if I would be that worried? But, Even if I say to someone like that, "Don't look!" and get angry, then they'd just look again the next time, right? So, I wouldn't say "don't look."
Jun: I'd ask her, "What was it that you wanted to see?" But, I don't have anything to be guilty of so I wouldn't mind too much.
Your girlfriend appears at the appointed meeting spot and here nose hairs are sticking out of her nose! What do you do?
Sho: I'd avoid talking about things like, "is she the type that that has long nose hair?(3)" and say, "I know it's a bit of a walk but, shouldn't we go to a restroom..."
Aiba: Usually, when girls bend over you can see a bit of their underwear, right? So usually their friend would quickly say, 'I can see your panties". I'd probably say it too, "Your nose hair is hanging out."
Nino: It wouldn't bother me.
Jun: I'd pay attention to the timing of it, and nonchalantly say it. But, If at all possible, before pointing it out I would like the hair to spontaneously go back into the nose. (laughs)
Ohno: At any rate, I'd laugh and remove it for her and say, "Mine also come out alot." (laughs)
Your girlfriend's homemade cooking tastes terrible. What do you do?
Nino: I'd say, "Tastes awful! Seconds please!" and pretend*** not to know whether it's good or not. (laughs)
Aiba: I'd nonchalantly say, "Huh? I guess it's just a difference of taste."
Sho: I'd say, "Delicious! But it doesn't really suit my taste."
Jun: I'd clearly say, "Sorry, it's not very good." If I don't do this, then she'll never get good at cooking, right? Because next time I want to eat something delicious.
Ohno: Anything I eat is good! I really won't be able to tell if my girlfriend's cooking is bad!
Your parents are against you seeing your girlfriend. What do you do?
Nino: It's none of their business is it.
Aiba; I'd ask why. I think it would be okay if I didn't stop seeing her. But if it's about marriage, well, that's another problem!
Sho: I'd be in trouble! I guess it can't be helped. But, it's not of their concern is it?
Jun: I wouldn't be bothered by it. It's their own problem.
Ohno: I'd ask them to think over what is it about her that they don't like.
You receive a love confession from good female friend of yours. What do you do?
Ohno: If I think, "Maybe this girl is pretty good after all?" I'll probably go out with her.
Nino: If I like her I'll go out with her, If I don't then I won't.
Jun: If you're just friends then you proabably won't go out.
Aiba: If I like her too, I'll go out with her.
Sho: Oh no...I'd find words to say to her that won't hurt her. Somehow, I'd like to keep things the way they are.
In the middle of a date, you end up in a quarrel with some punks. What do you do?
Ohno: We'd both run away. We'd win at running at least!
Sho: I'd say, "Excuse me, but I'm in a hurry..." and we'd run away!
Aiba: I'd whisper, "On the count of three..." and we'd run away together. If she's too slow, I'd grab her hand and pull her along with me.
Jun: I'd ask the punks, "Do you have a problem with us? We don't have any problems with you, so goodbye." and we'd take our leave.
Nino: I'd ask, "Did we do something? If you have a problem with us, we don't have have any problems with you" and pass through normally.
When you go to your girlfriend's room, it's messier than yours! What do you do?
Nino: I'd say, "What a mess." Nonetheless, I'm totally ok with it.
Aiba: I'd say, "What a mess! Let's clean it" and clean it up together.
Jun: I'd say, "Okay, shall we tidy it up?" and straighten up the room together. I'm rarely disillusioned.
Sho: I'd say, "Wouldn't it be better if it was a little cleaner?"
Ohno: I'd probably rejoice and say, "GREAT!<3" Because if you keep your room overly clean then you never feel settled in, right? You feel more at ease in a messy room.
When you go on a date to see a movie, your girlfriend wants to see a romance, but you want to see an action movie. Your opinions are divided on this issue. What do you do?
Sho: I'd see her romance movie and get my own when it comes out on DVD.
Nino: I'd go see her movie. I'd go by myself to see my movie.
Aiba: We'd rock paper scissors so there's no hard feelings. (laughs)
Jun: Rock paper scissors. We'll see whatever movie the winning person wants to see. If I lose then I'll comply with her wishes.
Ohno: I'd say, "Well then, when it's over wait for me, ok?" and we'd see our movies separately. (laughs)
You confess to the girl you've liked from afar for a long time and you get rejected. What do you do?
Nino: Give up.
Ohno: I'd give up without asking why. My feelings change fast~
Jun: If I feel like giving up I'll give up(5), depending on how much I like the girl.
Aiba: There's nothing more than just this? I'd say, "you can do it, Aiba!" to myself. But, wouldn't want to be in a situation like this.
Sho: Don't worry! Don't worry! Put it aside and go on!! (laughs)(4)
You witness your girlfriend and some guy you don't know walking together in a close manner. What do you do?
Sho: I'd do a 'WAIT A MINUTE!!" call.
Nino: I'd say, "Ah, they suit each other" and not think too much of it. I don't really get jealous much.
Aiba: I wouldn't mind. I'm not the type of person that's bothered by this.
Jun: In that case, I'd call her cell.
Ohno: I'd secretly go out with another girl too. (laughs) What a terrible guy I am.
You lost the gift that your girlfriend gave you. What do you do?
Ohno: I'd apologize, "I lost it, I'm sorry, it's my fault." and then we'd go together to buy a new one.
Sho: I'd frantically search for it. If I still can't find it, I'd write a 400 word essay of repentance. (6)
Aiba: I'd say at first, "It doesn't seem to be here...huh?!" And then truthfully apologize, "I lost it, sorry!"
Nino: I'd apologize with a "sorry!" I often lose things that people give me. Whenever that happens I apologize.
Jun: First of all, I'd search my room like my life depended on it. If after that I still can't find it no matter what, I'd probably tell her the truth.
When you go to a fortune-teller on a date, he/she tells you that, "You have the worst compatibility with each other." What do you do?
Sho: I'd say, "YOU'RE the worst. You're making empty predictions(7)."
Aiba: I'd say, "But I think we'll be compatible tomorrow!!"
Jun: I'd comfort my girlfriend by saying, "It's just a fortune-teller." You shouldn't let that kind of thing bother you, right?
Ohno: I'd encourage ourselves by saying, "If our compatibility is the worst, then we'll just have to try our best! (hahah, he says Ganbaru)
Nino: I'd say, "Huh? So what?!"
Your girlfriend begins to talk about breaking up. What do you do?
Ohno: I'd say, "I understand" and we'd break up immediately. It's probably because I did something wrong (laughs).
Nino: No matter what the cause of it is, I'd apologize with a "sorry!" If she wants to break up then I have no choice in the matter. I'd say, "Well, then that's what we'll do. Bye-bye."
Aiba: I guess it can't be helped! There no other choice but to break up if we were together reluctantly.
Jun: First, I'd listen to her story then, I'd think it over. If I understand where she's coming from then we'll break up.
Sho: I'd say, "Huh? What? Ah, I have bad reception so I'll call you again." By pretending to have bad reception, I can buy some time. (Wait, is this on the phone?!)
When you are out with your friends, all of sudden your girlfriend calls you and wants you to go out with her. What do you do?
Sho: I wouldn't go. I'd tell her, "I can't because I'm with my friends right now."
Aiba: If she knew that I was with my friends and called, I'd think, "What's up with that?" but if she didn't know then I'd invite her over and everyone would have fun together♪!
Nino: I'd say, "I'm with my friends now..."
Ohno: "Why?" I'd ask for a reason.
Jun: First, I'd listen to her reason (for calling), and if it's a circumstance where I have to go, i will. If it's a reason I can't understand (the importance of), then I'd say, "it's impossible for me to come right now."
When you wake up, you find that it's already the time when you are supposed to meet for your date! What do you do?
Sho: I'd call while running to the bus stop and munching on a pastry with milk in one hand!!
Aiba: First of all, I'd call and apologize to her with a "sorry!"
Nino: I'd call her and truthfully say "I just woke up! I'm sorry!"
Jun: I'd call her and say, "I'm sorry I'm going to be late." Then, I'd hurriedly get ready.
Ohno: I'd say, "Sorry, today's not a good day" and cancel the date. If she says she really wants to meet me then she can come to my house! (laughs.)
You ended up liking your girlfriend's little sister! What do you do?
Nino: I can't help it if I end up liking her!
Aiba: I would not like her sister! I say that but I just can't like her. Whoever wrote this question has been watching too many afternoon soap operas.
Sho: Ah, I won't tread on that territory. I would suppress my feelings.
Ohno: Her little sister is already shut out(**this he says in english)! I'd try not to go over to her house and pretend that her sister doesn't exist. But, if i break up with her then I don't know what i'd do. (laughs)
Jun: First of all, i'd break up with my girlfriend and think about what to do from there.
ARASHI Interview: Duet 03/2006 "Ai no Arashi"
15 Questions About Love
Tell us about your memories of your first love!
Aiba Masaki: Even though I don't really remember it anymore, it's probably when I was in kindergarten. That girl lived near my house, and I think I remember sleeping together when we had our afternoon naps. I don't know if this is just my own delusions (laugh)
Sakurai Sho: It was during the second year of junior high, the other person was a Hungarian. It's not too big of a problem that my first love isn't a Japanese, right? (laugh) She was just a very cute girl. It was the first time I ever felt like I was too nervous to eat.
Ninomiya Kazunari: Though I don't remember when exactly I had my first life, it was probably around the time when I was in elementary school. That's it.
Matsumoto Jun: It was in elementary school around 4th or 5th grade, I still remember the two of us playing together in the children's museum. Children's museum, it's very cute, isn't it?
Ohno Satoshi: 5th grade, but when I just realized that she was my "first love", she transferred to another school. Ahaha (laugh)
What do you do to the girl you like without realizing?
A: When I was in elementary school, I lifted girls' skirts, but I didn't dare lift hers. Maybe it's because she's the type of girl who's kind of hard to approach.
S: Look at her unconsciously. Watch her eat the entire time.
N: Nothing. I won't repeat the same manners over and over again just because I like someone.
M: Caring for her or something, probably. Because I don't like lying, it's possible that I would slip and say some unnecessary things, or things that might hurt her. It's like that a lot of times, I'm a big failure (laugh)
O: Unmanly intimacy.
What do you not want girls to do?
A: Probably not be the type who always throws away her food and drinks? If she was my girlfriend, then that would be really troublesome.
S: Using foul language, making noises while eating.
N: Nothing. If it's not one-on-one, then eating out with other guys, participating in social events are all okay. If it's an one-on-one situation, then it's okay too as long as she doesn't hide it from me.
M: Words that had appeared in HYD. "'Even I would' -- this type of wording is just degrading yourself. You have to use 'Even if it's me, I would', that type of wording." I thought that line was really great. So I hope she won't say "Even I would" that type of wording. [T/N: I guess in Japanese the first one sounds rude or something? I don't know what the original Japanese words were, sorry ^^; ]
O: Badmouthing other people. I feel this can't be said.
Are you the type who constrains your girlfriend?
A: I don't think I am. I don't like being controlled either. Even though I say that, if we're too laidback, then I'd wonder how things got this way. Someone who can match that kind of subtle feeling with me would be good.
S: No. That would be too silly.
N: No. I've always felt that "constraint" isn't a good thing, so I hate constraining others. But maybe, to her, going out with me is already a kind of "constraint"... (deep implications)
M: It's not that I'm not constraining either, but as long as I know the most basic things it would be fine, and I won't mind what she's doing.
O: No. But I don't mind being constrained.
What is the limit to flirting/What counts as going too far?
A: Depending on the situation, it's a bit ambiguous.
S: Seeing other guys face-to-face, eating dinner, I don't mind that. But if she purposely hide these things from me, then that would be going too far, right?
N: When she tells me "I'm sorry".
M: When your heart sways. That is, when the person involved thinks to themself that they are going too far.
O: Interacting one-on-one with the opposite sex, and holding hands. Even just having the thought of "I want to hold hands with him" would count as going too far.
You've made plans with your girlfriend, but when the time comes she hasn't arrived yet, and you can't reach her on her phone either. What do you do? How long do you wait for her?
A: That's hard. I would probably sit in a restaurant nearby, until she gives me a call. Even if I'm just eating out with friends and I get there early, I would do that too.
S: 30 minutes. I would wait for her without doing anything. If I listen to music while I wait, 30 minutes will pass very quickly. I don't like waiting by myself in the restaurant.
N: I'll probably wait until I get impatient. Actually, I've never made plans to meet up with a girl face-to-face. I probably won't in this lifetime either (certain)!
M: I would probably wait an hour. A few days ago, my friend made me wait half an hour, and I paced up and down the street waiting for him the entire time. But when he showed up, I still had to complain and say "You're too late!" (laugh)
O: Go home immediately (laugh). But if I can't reach her on her phone, I would worry whether something had happened. Under that situation I would wait 30 minutes.
Have you ever gone through a big heartbreak? How did you handle it?
A: Yup. It's impossible to suddenly bounce back just like that. Let it ease off with things happening around you, and time.
S: No. But even though you say it's a heartbreak, that's not really a bad thing either. You can take the time that would otherwise be wasted on that person and use it on other things instead.
N: Parting ways shouldn't really count as heartbreak. So no. Playing the guitar seems to be pretty popular too (pleased laugh) Even though I've lived for 22 years, I've never had the experience of being dumped. The way I'd handle it in my imagination would be to cut my hair, change myself a bit. This would count as a type of method too, probably.
M: I'm not really sure what a big heartbreak is like, but I've gone through the usual type of heartbreak before. The way I handle it... probably just let time ease things. Even though wallowing in heartbreak is really painful, but the deeper you feel the pain, it also shows how much you liked her.
O: I've been in the situation where we liked each other but we had to part. This probably counts as heartbreak too. There's no real way to handle it; just wait for the time to heal the wound. It took me a year to recover that time (laugh)
How many days can you go without contacting your girlfriend?
A: If there's no way to contact her, then even if it's just one day I'd worry. If I know where she is and what she's doing, then probably two to three days.
S: Probably around two days.
N: One day, probably. It would be better to be able to talk a bit every day.
M: One day, probably. If there's a reason, then it's okay no matter how many days passes.
O: Around one week is okay too. But maybe on the third day, I would worry whether or not something had happened to her.
If you're driving and your girlfriend starts to doze in the passenger seat, would you let her continue to sleep, or would you wake her up?
A: Call her a few times, but if she's still very sleepy, then there's nothing I can do. When I'm driving, the radio's my girlfriend (laugh)
S: Then I'll probably let her sleep? And turn off the music in the car too. I don't mind having people sleeping beside me, and I wouldn't feel uncomfortable either.
N: Then I'll probably just let her sleep. I usually sit in the passenger seat a lot, even though I don't really sleep much in the car. Even if someone sleeps beside me, I won't mind.
M: I'll just let her sleep. Even if she lies down, I won't mind. I think she'd probably be really tired. Even if a guy does that, I won't mind either.
O: Let her sleep. Because I feel that this is because she's very at ease, it would make me very happy. Even though I don't have a driver's license (laugh)
What kind of food do you want your girlfriend to make?
A: Ainame [T/N: A type of fish]. I really like eating that lately. (laugh) I'm just joking, anything would be good. If she made it herself then I would be very happy.
S: Anything is fine. I think it would be great if they can make Japanese food.
N: If it's for me to eat, then anything is fine.
M: Anything is okay. Ah, right~ I hope she can make noodles for me to eat (laugh) If she can fulfill that request immediately, then that would really be great.
O: Even though I say anything would be fine, if a guy says to a girl that "anything is fine", it would probably be very bothersome for her. So, based on the present, I want to eat food that accompany alcohol.
If you're going on a date right now, what kind of plans would you have in mind?
A: Expo! Ah, it already ended? I really want to go~
S: Probably the usual dinner and movie. I can't seem to think of anything~ (laugh) We wouldn't have to go anywhere special.
N: I want to sit at home with her and stare off into space. I usually don't like going on outdoor dates (laugh)
M: Carry steaming hot drinks in one hand and stroll along the streets.
O: Buy things, eat dinner, the end. I want this kind of super normal date.
What do you do if, during a date, what you want to do and where you want to go is different from what your girlfriend wants?
A: Then we can only settle things with jankenpon [T/N: Rock paper scissors].
S: We'll go a third place that neither of us chose. Like if the two of us chose to watch a movie or go to the amusement park.... then, in the end we'll decide to go to the seaside. So both of us won't feel offended (laugh)
N: We won't go on the date.
M: Jankenpon. If I lose, then I'll go with her to wherever she wants to go.
O: Give priority to what she wants to do. I can do my stuff whenever I want, so I'll let her first (laugh). The most important thing is to get along peacefully.
With regards to the expenses from the date, would you offer to pay for the both of you, let her pay, or each of you pay separately?
A: It'll probably be me. If it wasn't a date, then it'll depend on the person... if it's someone older than me, then I'll let them pay.
S: I can't possibly let her pay, right? I'll probably pay for it all.
N: I'll pay.
M: I basically like paying separately.
O: If I have to choose, I agree with paying separately. I don't think guys absolutely have to pay. Something like if she paid when we ate out earlier, then I would pay for dinner. That kind of feeling.
What do you hope the person you like will say to you?
A: What would it be? ("'You aren't so bad at all, idiot', right?" by MatsuJun) Nn, saying "Otsukaresama" really casually or something like that, probably. I don't know either.
S: It's possible that I would be moved even if she says nothing (laugh) Ah, but if she changes the way she calls my name, then that would make my heart skip a beat. When was the turning point for that change? That's the kind of feeling it'll generate (laugh)
N: Compared to using words, I think using actions is even better. Even though I would be really happy if she says "I like you" to me, in the end words are only the garnishing.
M: If it's the girl I like, then I'll feel happy no matter what she says to me.
O: Probably "I'm very at ease" or something like that. To know that she's at ease when she's with me, I'd feel very warm inside.
Please tell us three conditions to be your girlfriend.
A: Someone who has the same interests, someone who knows how to respect people, a girl who is kind and gentle.
S: Ureshii, tanoshii, daisuki! [T/N: Something like... "I'm happy, I had fun, I like it a lot!"] (laugh) If she says that to me, I'll be really happy too. Being happy when she's with me, having a lot of fun, really liking being together with me.
N: It's fine as long as you're the type I like.
M: Someone who has charisma, has her own opinions, and will be able to like me.
O: Someone who is gentle, not willful, nn.... understanding.
Aiba Masaki: Even though I don't really remember it anymore, it's probably when I was in kindergarten. That girl lived near my house, and I think I remember sleeping together when we had our afternoon naps. I don't know if this is just my own delusions (laugh)
