So I’ve decided to make my own FAQ for those newcomers who don’t really know what’s going on. And the first question I know everyone’s going to be asking is…

Q: But why are you making a FAQ thread? Don’t the subforums already have their own FAQs?
A: Yes, they do. But they’re limited, and relatively scattered. This way, everything will be in one spot, and all organized. New members can read this sticky after they join, and be pretty much caught up on what everything is. At least in general terms.

How to use: If you’ve just joined and are confused, you’ll probably want to read (or at least skim) over the entire thing. If it’s just something particular you’re looking for, and you’re using a machine running Windows, hit Ctrl+f and type in whatever you’re looking for, and continue clicking “find next” until you find it. If you can't find something you're looking for, post your question and I'll try to help you out. Happy reading.

If you have something to contribute, just post or PM me, and I’ll put it in here. Or if you’re a mod, just do it yourself.

Table of Contents:
1. Intro, ToC, and Updates (you are here).
2. About Gaia and the Guild System
3. About the MPRILC
4. About Psionics
5. About Magick
6. About Religion and Skeptics
7. Miscellaneous
8. Reserved

Updates:
12/06/06- FAQ posted. Yay.
12/10/06- "Updates" section added (ha), and more questions.
12/18/06- Minor changes and whatnot.
12/25/06- Merry Christmas (or holiday of your choice). I'm enjoying my holiday, while neglecting my FAQ duties. Nothing done.
12/31/06- Happy New Year! More minor changes and questions added.
01/24/07- More questions added, and...I'm thinking about doing other stuff...but I haven't yet. Procrastinators, unite!
02/24/07- Khalida added as mod, and some other stuff. It's been a month. That's too long.
03/18/07- Mods updated and site links added.
06/21/07- Mods updated and other minor changes. I've fallen behind.
09/25/07- Headers added (yay Photoshop) and minor changes made. Another three months have gone by...
01/23/08- Mods updated. I don't want to talk about it.
02/19/08- Mods updated and site links disposed of. Also synchronized the copy of the FAQ here with the copy on my hard drive. You know, just in case Gaia decides to s**t itself.
02/22/08- Mods updated again and minor changes to Psionics section.
02/26/08- Finally got around to using the info on Satanism Khalida linked me to. Thanks.

So now, onward.

Q: What are the benefits of being in a guild?
A: If you’re tired of fighting the n00bs in the chatterbox or the conservatives in the ED (ha), guilds can be a haven. I personally like them because there usually is a limit to who is accepted, usually barring any illiterates or children who don’t know what they’re doing. Plus, it offers a sort of closeness that a forum with a few thousand people can’t really offer. They also tend to be much more specialized, which helps keep conversations going. The benefits are countless, really.

Q: How do I join a guild?
A: If you haven’t figured this out already, you probably wouldn’t be reading this…unless you’re just checking out the guild. In that case, once you’ve decided that you want to join a guild that you’re looking at, there is a button that says “Request to Join” on the right side of the screen right under the guild header, and next to the “Back to Registry” button. After that, fill out the form to request to join. It’s not really a form, since the box is blank, but most guilds have specifications on their guild home page. So always check there, first.

Q: Do I get gold for posting in my guilds? Huh? DO I?!?
A: Yes, my little gold-starved children. You get gold for posting, voting, and even just surfing through the guild.

Q: Can I bump in guilds to get extra gold?
A: I suppose you could, but most members in most guilds wouldn’t like it. I’d always check before you did, because you wouldn’t want to piss anyone off, now would you? Especially in this guild…ye be warned.

Q: How do I donate to my favorite guild?
A: You might want to check with the guild mods first, some would rather you donate to the guild mule so they can better keep track of the funds. But if they want you to donate directly to the guild, go to the guild home page. At the bottom, there’s a little “Donate to Guild” section. Enter the amount you want to donate, type in your password, and hit the “Donate” button. And there you are, now you’ve donated.

Q: Where are the rules for the guild or forums?
A: Some guilds may have their rules on their home page, but most have them as a stickied thread in their main forum. It’s advised to read all of the stickies anyway, before you start posting.

Q: I need help. How do I find out who the mods are so I can PM them?
A: On the guild home page, there is a list of moderators at the bottom of the page, just above the donate box. There may also be a list inside the guild if you check there.

Q: Can I PM you if I have any questions or need more help?
A: Sure, but please don’t PM me asking for donations. I might have to smite you then. No banhammer required.

Q: What does MPRILC stand for?
A: It’s just the acronym for this guild, the Magick and Psionics Research Institute and Learning Center.

Q: What is the purpose of this guild?
A: We try to do exactly what the name says, research and teach people about Magick and Psionics, among a few other things. We try to maintain ongoing intelligent discussion about related topics, while having fun in the process. Remeber your second-grade teacher who always told you "learning can be fun"? Yeah, listen to her.

Q: Is this a roleplaying/anime guild?
A: NO. THIS IS NOT A ROLEPLAY GUILD. I should get this tattooed on my forehead. If you want to talk about Full Metal Alchemist (or whatever it is, I don’t watch anime myself), join a FMA guild. If you want to roleplay, join a roleplay guild. This is for serious discussion only. We do, however, have a Roleplay/Fun and Games subforum, so if you want to start a roleplay, feel free to in there. But if you roleplay in any of the other forums, you’ll probably get smited with the mighty banhammer.

Q: Who can join this guild?
A: Technically anyone can join, but as for whom it’s directed to, I think I should quote the guild home page. “This guild is for anyone even remotely interested in anything involving Psi, Magick or Alchemy. This includes Scientists, Pagans and of course Alchemists of ANY religion, even skeptics if they're okay with having to respect psychics.” Yes, you can be a skeptic, as long as you respect others and are at least semi-intelligent.

Q: But I’m a Christian, can I still join?
A: Of course. There quite a few Christians in the guild. If you don’t think your religion allows for psionics/magick/etc., then you’ve got a decision to make. The Bible’s all about interpretation, right? We’re not going to force you to believe anything here, but if you’re trying to decide, we can help. Regardless of whether you actually believe in it or not, you're still welcome to join the guild to learn and talk about what you do or don't believe in, and why.

Q: Do I have to believe everything I read about in the guild? Because there are some things that I’m not so sure about…
A: Of course not. You don’t have to believe in anything, really. Although it will probably come in handy when you’re talking or debating about something. There are certain things that I don’t quite believe in, but that’s fine because I don’t run around telling people how idiotic they are for believing in those things. You can be in the guild and not believe in some of the stuff. That’s fine. Just don’t be a d**k about it, because then we’d have to kick you out, and you wouldn’t like that very much, now would you?

Q: I just joined this guild. What should I do first?
A: Well, if you're reading this, you're off to a good start. Before posting, please read (or at least glance at) all of the stickies. Introduce yourself in the "Introduce Yourself" sticky, feel welcome and...aware of announcements in the "Welcome and Announcements" sticky, find a banner that you like in the "Banners" sticky, and ask the mods to invite your friends who are looking for a guild like this in the "Invitiations" sticky. After that, spend some time browsing the subforums and threads that interest you, and maybe some that don't. Hopefully, you'll learn something. Or, if you have something you want to discuss or publically ask, make a thread. Just make sure you have fun

Q: Who are the mods of this guild?
A: Joshua_Ritter, Azana Brown, Pageantry (Yagi), Khalida Nyoka, [BlkCat], Mitsh, a**l Jesus, and DrasBrisingr (that's me) are our guild mods. Their word is law. Get to know them, respect them, cater to their every need. Remember only they wield the mighty banhammer.

Q: But who are the mods, really?
A: Josh is our captain and resident theorist. His mind is constantly observing and theorizing and putting together pieces of some unknown puzzle. Azana, or as many like to call her, “book girl,” is our resident genius and also a crew member. Yagi is the keeper of the peace, and is perpetually worried about offending someone. Because of this (and a long list of other reasons I won’t bother to go into), she is completely and utterly awesome. Khalida (crew) is incredibly knowledgable, and always willing to help out. [BlkCat] (crew) is a level-headed peacekeeper, and always welcomes new faces. Mitsh is quite possibly my favorite crew member hailing from Glasgow. Maybe that's because he's the only one, but that's ok. He's all for getting stuff done, and is perpetually brimming with brilliant ideas. a**l Jesus is our newest crew and always has something to contribute to just about any subject there is. And I mean, come on, who doesn't want a little divine a**l intervention? And finally, I’m Dras (vice captain), and, love me or hate me, I'm usually going to say what's on my mind. A lot of people don't really like me because of this, but that's ok. If you, too, grow to hate me, just make sure I know about it so I don't do anything stupid. And I’m going to end it here, because I never know what to put in bios and whatnot. So yeah, these are our mods.

Q: How do I contact the mods?
A: For more serious and private questions, you’ll probably want to PM them. But for simple questions, please don’t flood their inboxes. You can ask in one of the stickies, threads, or even in here. They check the stickies pretty regularly, especially if they see a new post.

Q: A mod isn’t answering my question, and I’ve asked him in a sticky/thread and PM! What do I do? Does he hate me or something?
A: People tend to forget that many Gaians and, yes, mods have a life. They can’t be online all the time. Give them a little bit of time to read your question, think of an answer, and respond. If it’s been a few days, you see they’ve been online and in the guild, and they still haven’t answered you, then you might consider asking again. They may not have gotten the PM or understood that the question was directed to them. All of our mods are kind and helpful, and wouldn’t ignore you intentionally.

Q: What are the subforums for?
A: Our subforums work just like the subforums in any other forum on Gaia. They’re just places to keep the threads organized, and to possibly find a bit more specific help than in the main forum. We currently have 9 subforums that are accessible to the members. The other is the crew subforum, and is used by the mods only. Don’t worry, we’re not talking bad about you in there. Chances are, if we have a problem with you, you’ll know it.

Q: What are the stickies for?
A: The stickies serve many purposes, which are usually stated in the title. There are the announcement threads, that are used for *gasp*, you guessed it, announcements. Then there are the other stickies, which have things like member introductions (please use that, we want to get to know you), a help sticky where you can ask general questions, progress in the guild, and a lot of other things, if you’ll take the time to look. The subforums also usually have their own stickies, so check those out too for rules and general information.

Q: Cool, I want a banner of the guild to put in my signature, where can I get one?
A: There’s a sticky in the Roleplay / Fun and Games subforum entitled “Banners”. You might want to start by checking there. And, as always, feel free to make your own. Be sure to post it in the Banners thread so other people can use it if they want.

Q: Some threads mention a MPRILC website. Can I have a link to that?
A: Yes, there was an outside site that the former captain, LoBo_23, created. But it fell into disuse, and it was deleted. So don't worry about it.

Q: What are psionics?
A: Psionics is just a vague term for general psychic phenomena. You may have heard the term parapsychology, or paranormal, and that’s pretty similar. It generally includes both extrasensory perception (ESP) and the psychokineses.

Q: What is ESP (Extra Sensory Perception), exactly?
A: Literally, ESP is acquiring sensory information without using the standard 5 senses (touch, sight, hearing, taste, smell). But it goes much deeper than this. ESP can include, clairvoyance (remote viewing), pre/postcognition, aura reading, empathy, telepathy, astral projection, and communicating with spirits. I’ll try to go into more detail about these later.

Q: Then what is psychokinesis?
A: Psychokinesis (PK) is basically energy manipulation, that can be used to accomplish many things. It includes all of the standard kineses, and telekinesis is probably the most well known. But there’s also pyrokinesis (controlling fire), terra/geokinesis (earth), aerokinesis (air), atmokinesis (weather), hydrokinesis (water), photokinesis (light), cryokinesis(temperature/cold), electrokinesis (electricity), and about a dozen others. Use Google or Wikipedia if you’ve want to know more. Or you could just ask in our kinetics subforum!

Q: I’ve heard about “ouija boards” (pronounced wee-jee board) being sold as toys. But now people are saying they’re used to contact spirits? OMG, I’m so confused. Help?
A: It’s true. Milton-Bradley, the toy company, sells ouija boards on the shelves right beside Monopoly. While there is a lot of controversy over this, it’s all a matter of opinion and personal experience. Some believe that ouija boards are inherently evil, and only bad things can come from using them. Others think they’re harmless, as long as you’re not stupid and don’t call on Satan or anything. And others still don’t believe they work at all. If you’re really interested, go ahead and buy or make one and try to contact your dead uncle or something.

Q: Cool! Where can I learn how to do all this stuff?
A: Most of psionics and magick are based off energy. So naturally, you’ll probably want to learn how to control energy first. Check the Writings, Books, and Articles Discussion subforum for lessons and suggestions.

Q: There are a lot of posts about people and their spirit guides/guardians. What are they?
A: Spirit guides, spirit guardians, and familiars all refer to a being (not physical unless on the astral plane) who acts as spiritual council or a protector to a select person. Some have more than one spirit guide, and some have just one. If you're interested in conversing and/or finding your spirit guide, try meditating, astral projecting, or other methods that I am not familiar with.

Q: Some people have said that they can store psychic energy in different stones, crystals, and metals. Where can I learn about this?
A: Why, what a brilliant question, my friend. You see, a wonderful member by the name of Dorian Requiem migrated a thread on the subject from a dying guild to ours (and properly credited the source, I might add). The thread can be found here.

And now I’ll just list some general information of a few basic subjects that you might want to be familiar with, or else you might be kind of confused.

Empathy: ability to perceive and feel the emotions of others. Some say they feel the emotions through changes in energy, others say it’s more telepathic; it really just depends on the person.

Precognition: the perception of information about the future before it happens. A lot of people claim to have precognitive dreams, and personally I think that there’s a lot of people who have precog and just ignore it or pretend it’s not happening. I’m probably not alone in that thought. It’s often accompanied by feelings of déjà vu, especially with the dreams since sometimes the dreamer doesn’t realize he’s dreamed it.

Retro/postcognition: the opposite of precog; perception of events that have already happened.

Auras: an energy field surrounding a person, animal, or even inanimate object at times. You’ll hear about people’s aura colors and that refers to literally the color of their aura. Different colors mean different things, as auras are often reflective of your mood or chakra. But they’re not to be confused with eyeburn, which can happen after you’ve stared at something for a while. But eyeburn usually isn’t very colorful, and is kind of obvious because it moves with your eyes.

Astral Projection: traveling on the astral plane by means of dreaming or mediation. The astral plane is a sort of parallel world where you have your own physical body (“astral body”) that is a replication of your own. There are a lot of techniques to reach the astral plane, and an equal amount of threads on it in our guild.

Out-of-Body Experiences (OBE/OOBE): literally leaving ones physical body for a period of time. This can include astral projection, certain near-death experiences, and many other methods. One usually only leaves the body for a short period of time (seconds or minutes), but people have reported experiences lasting longer (hours).

Telepathy: communication between two people by means other than through the perceptual senses. In other words, two people talking to each other with their minds.

Shielding: used to protect from unwanted energies, contact, or other…things. For techniques on how to shield, look through some of the threads. There’s plenty of information all over the guild.

( I apoligize in advance: my knowledge of magick is extremely limited, so I’m relying on the mods and members to help me out. Please, if you have anything to contribute or correct, let me know.)

Q: So what is magick, exactly? Pulling a rabbit out of a hat and changing a scarf into a bird, right?
A: Ha, hardly. That’s all stage magic. Magick (the ‘k’ is more archaic, and is generally used to separate the practices from stage magic) is the method of arcane art used in order to work toward desired effects. There are many threads about it in the guild, and as always, if you have a question, don’t be afraid to ask!

Q: Isn’t magick evil?
A: Most, if not all people in the guild do not believe magick is evil. It can be used for evil, yes, but it is not inherently evil. Our own LoBo gave me a great analogy for magick. In short, magick is like a kitchen knife. You can use it to go out and stab somoneone or yourself, or you can do brilliant things with it. You can use it to make a meal, whittle wood, and thousands of other things. Magick, like a knife, is a tool, to be manipulated as one wishes. But, if you want to believe nothing good can come out of magick, then go ahead. Just be able to back up your beliefs, and don’t go around saying “OMG, you devil-worshipper! BURN THE WITCH!” Then we might have a little problem.

Q: Does magick have to be related to Wiccan/pagan gods?
A: Magick is pretty much based on personal preference. Some believe it’s necessary to pray to a god or goddess, and some don’t. So the answer is no, not necessarily. But if you want to incorporate your god(s)/goddess(es) into your rituals and spells, it couldn’t hurt.

Q: Do people actually write spells and stuff?
A: Some people do. I, myself, do not, but then again I don’t think of myself as a magick practitioner. But from what I’ve heard, everyone has his or her own style in spell-writing. You could ask people for suggestions, I suppose, but I do not believe there is any set formula for it.

Q: Do you have to use incense, candles, holy water, etc. when performing rituals?
A: As far as I know, no. But some feel it strengthens their spell or ritual, and adds to the ambiance. It’s really a personal preference, really.

Q: What about tarot?
A: Tarot cards are generally used for divination. The pictures displayed on each card are allegorical representations, and can be interpreted by the reader as he or she chooses. But not just anyone can pick up a deck of tarot cards, draw the death card and scream, “OMG I’m going to die tomorrow!” In fact, the death card usually represents a major change, which, yes, can be death, but can also be many other things. So it truly is an art and acquired skill. Tarot cards are sold at almost any bookstore, and most come with a little booklet giving hints and tips. I’m sure card readers in the guild wouldn’t mind giving you suggestions, too.

Q: What about alchemy?
A: Alchemy is a form of magick that uses symbols and circles to bring about the desired result. Alchemy and magick are almost synonymous, but, depending on the person, magick is more likely to use some sort of deity to achieve that result. But again, it’s all a matter of opinion and personal preferences. Feel free to ask questions about other people’s preferences, rituals, and styles. You’ll find them to be about as different as the people themselves.

Q: And necromancy? Isn’t it all a little bit…sketchy?
A: Again, it’s really up to you what you want to believe. All I’m here to do is give basic information, and it’s your decision what you choose to believe. Anyway, necromancy is the practice of using energy to alter and/or observe the state of the dead. However, several members feel this practice is extremely dangerous, so if you’re really that interested in it, don’t go into it blind. Do research on the subject, and learn your own boundaries and limits. This goes for all of the subjects in the guild.

Q: So is that all magick includes?
A: No, of course not. These classifications are only basic guidelines. Everyone has different opinions on what classifies as magick, psionics, and everything else. So if there’s any other subjects that you believe needs to be here, again, just let me know.

Q: Wait…religion and skepticism? Why did you put those two together?
A: Well, with religion comes its skeptics, right? I’ve already addressed a little bit of the subjects, but I just want to clarify a few things.

Q: So are you sure that even though I believe in [insert religion here], I can participate in the discussions in this guild?
A: Yes, of course. We love to have all kinds of discussions, from people of all different points of views. Christian, Wiccan, Pagan, Satanist, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, Jew, whatever you follow, discuss away!

Q: So we can talk about whatever we want regarding religion?
A: Yes, of course. As long as it’s civil. No “omg your religion is wrong! there’s only one god, and he is pwns joo, b***h!” None of that. As I like to say, your religion is always incorrect.

Q: Do you mean that I’m wrong and you’re right?
A: No, not at all. Whenever debating/discussing religion, one should always keep in mind that they are wrong. Because that’s how the opposing force is going to see it. So you should base your responses on how the other person will view you, which is that you are wrong. Don’t get all bitchy and righteous on anybody. You’re wrong, remember?

Q: I’ve heard only a little bit about Wicca. That’s where you worship the devil and put curses on people, right?
A: Nooo, if you come in the guild thinking that, you’ll get eaten alive. In all literal sense. Wicca, like all religions, is defined by interpretation. But while Wicca practitioners often participate in witchcraft, many are very responsible, and only do good work. Contrary to popular belief, they do not worship any sort of devil or Satan. In fact, the Wiccan deities are more closely associated with the earth and “Mother Nature”, if you will. Wicca is, in fact, a polytheistic religion, having multiple gods and goddesses all centered around nature. Similar to…Greek, Roman, and Celtic mythology, if you’re familiar with those. I’m not Wiccan, so I can’t exactly tell you what exactly all the beliefs are, but, like all religions, the beliefs vary from person to person. There are different versions of the gods and goddesses, different views of the “afterlife”, different everything. If you want to know more, ask someone who is Wiccan. That’s all I can tell you. Anyone, correct me if I’m wrong.

Q: But what about Satanism? That has to be a devil-worshipping religion, right?
A: Ha. Now Satanism I know even less about. But I do know that it focuses mainly on nature, the self and the individual’s ability to rise above society, and very little on the worshipping of any “god”, or “devil”, for that matter. And the Satan that they do…recognize, has almost nothing in common with the “Satans” of other religions. That means no fiery pits of hell, no pitchforks, no little minions running around, and no everlasting torture. If you’re really interested in Satanism, buy the Satanic Bible. I’ve heard it’s a very interesting read from many, including a very Christian friend of mine. Just like Christianity and other religions, Satanism has many “denominations,” or different classes of belief, so it’s difficult to generalize. But a common line of though is that through personal achievement and satisfaction, one can achieve a kind of “spiritual enlightenment”. Instead of the Christian meekness, they respect survival of the fittest and natural order. But that’s all I can give you. I know we have at least one Satanist in the guild, and many whose knowledge of the religion extends far greater than mine. [Some information taken from Satanism: Explained v 2.0.

Q: So I’m Wiccan, and I hate those damn Bible-thumpers. There aren’t any Christians in here, are there?
A: If you think all Christians are Bible-thumpers, you’re just as bad as those who think Wicca worships Satan. It’s true, some Christians are annoying (many Christians will even admit that to you), but that’s not to say they all are. You have to remember that the Bible says to spread God’s word, and even if you don’t believe it, it’s what they believe. So you trying to convince them that their religion is bullshit is going to do about as much good as them trying to convert you to Christianity. Yes, there are Christians in this guild. Yes, Christians and Wiccans can co-exist peacefully. And believe it or not, there’s a 99% chance that after talking to someone of a different faith about their faith for five minutes, you’ll learn something different about the world, or about yourself. So before you go on your Christian-bashing spree, just remember that you’re only doing exactly what the Bible-thumpers are doing: annoying the hell out of the mods.

Q: There’s a subforum called “Otherkin”, but you haven’t talked about it. What is “Otherkin”?
A: I don’t really think the topic of Otherkin really fits into Magick, Psionics, or religion. Otherkin are people who believe their soul or spirit is connected with a non-human animal. Otherkin and the belief of reincarnation are almost always intertwined, since Otherkin are "reborn" as a human, when they were once an animal or other sort of creature. There are many types of otherkin, including vampires, dragons, angels, fae (fairies/faeries), elves, and even common animals such as felines and canines. They often have habits and feelings that aren’t exactly normal for a human, and in the astral plane they usually appear as their kin. Check out the Otherkin subforum, and feel free to ask a question in there. I can’t really tell you a whole lot about it.

Q: What are past lives?
A: Past lives are exactly what they sound like. The belief of reincarnation is defined by the rebirth of the soul. So when you die, your soul is reborn into another body. You usually don’t remember them, unless you go through something like past-life regression (a process involving hypnosis to recover past-life experiences, because supposedly the subconscious is aware of them, but the conscious has little or no access to the memories of the past life without regression or something similar).

So yeah, that’s the FAQ. Rather long, I’ll admit, but hopefully you’ll have learned something.

If you have a question that hasn’t been answered in here, be sure to ask it so I can add it. And again, guild members, if you’ve got something to contribute, tell me.

Why, thank you. And actually I considered the whole "Spawn of Satan" title, but I decided against it. Wouldn't want to upset the newcomers. Haha.
