Hi, and welcome to the Fa'e Questers Guild! biggrin We're happy you're here and interested in questing for a Fa'e. But before you do, we have a few rules and guidelines required for questers, to make sure your character fits into the game should they ever become a reality. ^^

Your hosts in the Questers Guild are:

Kalindara - Guild Vice-Captain. She accepts people into the guild and helps to moderate the guild as needed. Kali also reviews and stamps when needed! Get in touch with her if you have any pressing issues needing intervention or special help.

Arrien & Cerena - Guild Crew. They review and stamp quests, making sure your concepts meet the guidelines... and in general helping you make your quests awesome. biggrin

Sosiqui - Guild Captain and co-owner of Fa'e. She can answer questions and her word is considered law when it comes down to it. Please don't PM her unless you have a crucial problem nobody above can help you with. She also helps to review and stamp when she has time!

Many other Guardians of Fa'e can be found around the guild, offering critiques, lucky charms, and other things for Questers. Many thanks to them as well for helping out! ^^

[pretty graphic goes here - the rules of Fa'e creation!]

These rules apply to all Fa'e created from this time on, and all quest threads up until now must conform to these guidelines - you're going to have to follow the rules if you ever get a Fa'e, so why not start now? smile Please read the following rules very carefully, because making sure your concept obeys them is a crucial part of finally getting your Fa'e reborn.

Note that these rules do not retroactively apply to Fa'e already in existence; however, the fact that Fa'e which may break these rules is not a reason for complaint that yours should be able to as well. The game has shifted over time, and these are the current guidelines. If you're concerned that your quest violates some of them, but aren't sure, feel free to ask!

Quote:
What Fa'e Are:

  • Gods, demons, heroes of legend, mythical creatures, beings of folklore, mythical/magical objects and locations. But they all share one very important thing in common: the need for a second chance.

  • Reincarnations of those ancient powers. Because of this, the concept you choose needs to be something that no longer exists. This is the one area where some mythtwisting is permitted - if your concept didn't actually perish in myth, but could be said to have faded from influence since, you can write in how they disappeared.

  • Based on pre-existing myths or legends from real Earth cultures.

  • Strongly influenced by their mythbase and source of power. Their special features and supernatural/magical ablities all derive directly from their first lives, and should all be easily traceable back to that source. (So don't just add something because it's cool, okay? Have a mythbase reason for it.)

Quote:
What Fa'e Are Not:

  • The rebirth of something still in existence. That'd be kind of hard, huh? What this rule means is that can't use anything that does actually still exist, like cities that are still thriving in the modern world, artifacts of old that are really in museums, and so on.

  • Based on major figures in major world religions. Using such figures from major religions as a 'mythbase' is highly volatile and sensitive issue to many people, and as such we have decided to not allow them. The defining line is if the subject in question is a major figure or a pivotal point or focus of belief and doctrine in the religion in question. If you're concerned your quest may be over the line, ask one of the Guild Crew and they will let you know.

  • Based on historical figures. Mundane humans who really existed are not ancient powers of old, and therefore not good concepts for Fa'e. Note that the one type of exception to this rule is when the power and legend of real people have been inflated by time and tales to mythical status; a wonderful example of this is King Arthur's Camelot, which bears little to no resemblance to the historical Roman Arturius. If man has truly become myth, it's fine, but if man remains a man... it's not. Again, ask if you need help defining this line.

  • Mundane. A Fa'e concept needs to have had some sort of power in their last life. They need to have something to rediscover when they are reborn. This needs to be magic or supernatural; simply having a high level of skill at something mundane is not enough. It doesn't mean that your character needs to be a great and powerful user of magic or something, but they need to have been touched by power and able to use it or incorporate it somehow.

  • Based on multiple myths at once. Pick one myth. Use it. Mixing myths is not permitted. If you don't have a lot of information on your chosen myth, just research the best you can and stay as true to what you know as possible - but DON'T mix in unrelated stuff just to try and spiffy it up!

  • Based on multiple characters at once. As an example, if your myth involves three powerful sorceresses, pick ONE powerful sorceress. Don't stuff all three of them into one body; pick one, and use the others as NPCs later in the Fa'e's story if you'd like.

  • Based on original or fictional concepts. Real myths, legends, and folktales only! If the only place you can find reference to your myth is in a fictional context (like a novel or a videogame or something) then it does not count.

  • Something that overlaps current Fa'e in play. When you plan out your Fa'e's powers and appearance, PLEASE be sure to check the Fa'e Database for information on what's in use already. In addition, some Guardians may have specialized ablities/physical features that their Fa'e posess that they're very uncomfortable with other people using. Please read through and ensure that your Fa'e concept is not using any of those specific ideas.

In addition, there are some concepts that are restricted for use, because they're reserved either for metaplot usage, have been claimed by questers already recieving second generation Fa'e, or have simply reached a saturation point in the game. These ideas are off-limits and cannot be used in new Fa'e concepts.

Quote:

General No-Nos:

  • Anything currently in use, either as a Fa'e, an NPC of a Fa'e, or a Fa'e Metaplot NPC. Info on this can be found in the Fa'e Database thread.
  • Anything on a quest listed in the Completed Quests forum. These Fa'e either have been or will be brought to life shortly, so their concepts are obviously taken.

Saturation Point (we have enough in play, no more!):

  • Greek myths.
  • Dragons.
  • Unicorns.
  • Angels.
  • Characters strongly based on seduction as a core part of their magic and mythos. (If you want a seductive character as part of the personality? Go for it, it takes all kinds. Just... no more seductive powers or mythbases with seduction as a crucial selling point.

Since you've read the rules, now's the time to make sure your quest fits them! Head on down to the next post!

[pretty image goes here: Reviewing & Stamping - Getting Your Quest Approved]

Once your quest is all fixed up, it's time to get it approved! This process is called reviewing and stamping, and you can request it in this thread.

Q. Wait. Review and stamp? What madness is this?

A. Reviewing and stamping is a new process that ALL Fa'e quests must go through (regardless of age, this means both long-running quests and new quests). A quest recieving a stamp of approval from one of the reviewers means that that quest's concept meets all the rules - that it's not a quest for a character that's not allowed, doesn't contain elements that wouldn't be permitted should the character become a Fa'e, etc. It ensures that the character highlighted in your quest is as close as possible to what the future Fa'e will be!

Q. So why bother getting stamped, anyway?

A. Because your character can't enter the game if it breaks the rules. Getting your character approved is also really helpful for other reason - because characters that break the rules won't win in contests, for one thing. By getting stamped, you KNOW that won't be an issue for you. It's one less obstacle!

Pretty much, if you want a Fa'e, you're going to have to live by our rules eventually, so why not start at the beginning? It saves everyone a lot of trouble. ^^

Q. Does having a stamp mean my character is AWESOME?

A. All it means is that your character doesn't break the rules. Though we hope your quest is AWESOME too, that's not what the stamp means.

Q. Who reviews and stamps?

A. Kalindara, Arrien and Cerena are the official stampers. Sosiqui may do it on occasion too. If you recieve a stamp post in your quet thread from any of those three after posting a request for review, then you're good to go!

Q. HAH. I GOT A STAMP, THEN CHANGED MY QUEST TO SOMETHING ELSE. PWNED.

A. Significant changes in your quest concept means you need to be re-approved. 3nodding If you change and don't put in for a re-approval, but keep the stamp as if you earned it for the new concept... well, that's bad. Don't do it, because we will notice and we will smack down anyone who does this. XP

[pretty image here - frequently asked questions]

Q. Is my concept's mythbase okay? How do I find out?

A. By reading through the rules above, first off. If you've done that and you're still not sure, post in the Questions & Answers thread and wait for someone to answer. ^^

Q. Someone else is questing for the concept I want! Now what?

A. While there is no strict rule saying two people can't quest for the same thing, we strongly advise you to try and pick different things. That way, your quest won't be crushed if the other person succeeds first, and vice-versa - just a better deal all around.

Q. My concept doesn't have a whole ton of myth around it... but it IS mythical... is that okay?

A. Give us what you have. Don't be tempted to add other stuff to try and 'justify' your choice - keep it simple, keep it pure, and you'll be just fine. Quality, not quantity.

Q. My concept was clearly supernatural in its past, but the myth doesn't give details on powers... help?

A. It's okay for you to logically extrapolate some powers out based on that. Like, say, if your concept is a rock monster, giving it rock-based powers would not go amiss. However, don't go nuts and give it water-based powers, because that makes no sense! Keep it logical - if the average person can't figure out why you'd have a certain power given the mythbase you have, you probably ought to revise.

More coming as needed.

Need More Help?

Check out some Guardian-created Fa'e guides here - they give very good advice on how you can mesh your concept into the world of Fa'e.

Cere's Guide to Fa'e Creation - by Cerena, Lethe's Guardian
Fa'e: More Than a Myth - by Arrien, Dustin's Guardian

Also, many Fa'e Guardians are more than willing to help critique your quest! Check the main quester's guild forum for threads set up by people who will do critiques for you.

A request/warning we decided was worth mentioning:

Anya reeeeally does not like small poisonous, bitey animals like scorpions and spiders, and would rather they weren't fa'e. Having to do one of these is more than enough, don't you think? Please think of our lovely artist and owner, and respect her wishes/phobias.

(P.S. Anen is a moth, not a spider. Just in case you were confused.)
