biggrin Greetings everyone.

I bought a Betta fish a few weeks ago and thought it would be a good idea to join a guild that is about fish and fish upkeep. =D
So anyways. He's my baby. My boyfriend, who refuses to name him, really likes him too. He's had more fish in his life than I have had in mine; I end up fussing over the betta more than he does.
He's about 3-4 inches long, including his massive tail. Body color changes from green to blue to orange. He is blue most of the time though. His fins are bright red with a little bit of green where it connects to his body.
He loves his plant, which he has successfully destroyed by wiggling through it and thus making all the stems break off and float to the top of the fishbowl.
I clean his bowl once a week, which includes putting decholrinating stuff, and a half teaspoon of aquarium salt.
Fortunately he loves his betta bits. Little pellets of fish meal he likes to eat. I've tried feeding him freezedried brine shrimp...but he don't like it.
Which is odd I guess because I've read online and in books that betta love brine shrimp. Oh well. lol

I'll have links to a picture of him and his bowl setup soon.

The betta bits, along with most other dried fish food, have shrimp in them, but they're specialy formulated for bettas. Hikari makes some really nice pellets that I like, but bettas eat pretty much anything.

Also, If you hold a mirror up to the bowl his fins will flair out and his collor will get richer (I'm assuming you have a male), but don't leave the mirror there or he'll try to beat up his reflection. I've read its good to let him do that from time to time though just so he can show dominance over something lol

Oh, and Welcome to the guild whee

Hehehehehe! I have two betas right now. At first I had six but I gave them away to friends cause I still lived with my dad and he hated my obsession with fish. Mars is a red veil tail and speckles is a white veil tail with red… well… speckles! I love both of them to death and also found neither like shrimp either… unless they’re still alive! Also, cut up peas really really small and take off the skins every beta I have owned has LOVED it. Also I found they enjoy carrots and bloodworms a lot too. I love my babies and I know they love me too (after all how many fish do you know let you lift them out of the water without a fight?) blaugh blaugh blaugh blaugh blaugh blaugh blaugh blaugh blaugh blaugh blaugh blaugh

Awww! I love Bettas... one of my favorite fish. My favorite, though, was a female, who just died last month. I actually cried, which, well, is embarrassing, she being "just a fish" but I am sure y'all at least understand. cry Miss Belagio.

I do still have a darling Betta, too, though, a male, named Mikhail Gorbichaiv (I have no-doubt butchered the spelling) but we just call him Gorbi. I'll have to show a pic of him later, too! I want to see yours!

I'm starting to breed them. The little guys are my specialty. I lost count of how many I have. Most of mine are crownies.

that's nice. Bettas are among the nicest looking freshwater fish around.
My friend breeds them he recently gave me a baby one... he was brown. as he grows, his fins are becoming red and turquoise. so pretty. I keep him in a 25 gallon comunity tank.
just make sure your betta lives in warm water temperatures to avoid ich, and that his water is super clean to avoid fin rot...very nasty diseases...

mmmm... its nice that you have a new betta, I love my crowltail in my 10 gallon, but I would reccomend getting him a real aquarium. bowls under 2 gallosn do not provide nearly enough room to exercise, and cleaning it once a week allows waste to build up, and over time his health will deteriorate and he will live half the lifespan of a betta kept in a proper home. it might be better if you stepped up the bowl cleanings to once every other day, but it would still be much better for is heath if you get hima real tank. I reccomend one of at least 2 gallons, the mini-bow tanks made by all-glass aquarium are very nice. however... these are just suggestions.... he can live in the bowl, he'd just live a much better life in a real aqaurium. trust me. 3nodding

i have a steel blue betta in a small tank with a couple of tetras - he's been there almost a year and is doing very well.i called him Tuatha, after a character in a book from the Lost Years of Merlin series by T. A. Barron.I know its odd, but he fits it! rolleyes

Since this seems to be the Betta thread, I thought I'd ask here...

Well, I have one male Betta in a 10 gal tank. We've had him for awhile now... prolly about three months, but the problem I'm finding is that he likes to rest at the in-take of the water filterer. His fins get suctioned up and he actually rips them as he swims away o.0 I haven't found any solution for this problem and not sure what to do about it.
