GROUPS OF PEOPLE THREADS:The NinjasThe IroquoisThe AztecsVIKINGSI want to thank Blind Guardian the 2nd for the info he has contributed. The first Vikings were Scandinavian explorers, traders, and warriors that travelled by ship. They raided the British isles, France, and other parts of Europe from around 793 to 1066 A.D., the period referred to as the Viking Age. Blind Guardian the 2nd Vikings reached as far into the interior of Europe as the Middle East, and were hired as personal bodyguards by Byzantine Emperors. The Vikings are famous for their navigation abilities. They are actually the first Europeans to reach the New World, centuries before the voyage of Christopher Columbus. But, since they were really uninterested in the New World, it was forgotten until rediscovered by Columbus. Some Vikings believed that they received power from the bear. These Vikings would wear bear skins and go into a complete frenzy during battle, believing that they were given supernatural strength from the bear. This is where we get the word "berzerk". Blind Guardian the 2nd There is a belief that beserkers indulged in a form of magic mushroom before battle to numb pain and create frenzy, but there is no conclusive proof for this, as the mushrooms in large doses can cause vomiting, nausea and stomach upsets. Not a characteristic you want in the army. Surprisingly, few Vikings' helms actually had horns. Since Vikings fought in close-quarters and in a frenzy, horns on their helmets would have led them to accidently injure their own side often. Some ceremonial Viking helmets had horns, though. Vikings are also famous for being extremely savage and violent. Yes, they were. But so were most cultures in their period. In context, the Vikings weren't incredibly violent. The decline of Vikings actually started with the spread of Christianity into Scandinavia. With the coming of centralized authority in these countries, Viking raids became more risky and less profitable.

You could create the thread and name it a GROUPS OF PEOPLE thread, and I'll link the ninja and viking threads to it? Or you can send me the text and I'll create the thread and credit you at the top. Either way works.

This is a pretty cool idea, it's awesome to learn about different cultures. I can write one up for the Iroquois Confederacy, since I did a paper on them a year or two ago, specifically the Seneca Tribe. The Idea was quite amazing, and the United States system of government was based partly on the Native American form taken from the Iroquois League.
By the way, just one question.
Where were the Vikings from? I know they settled Iceland and were from Northern Europe, but I've never heard much about them except for the raids.
