I was talking to a guy in my first period class the other day. He on the football team. Well, we were talking about band. And I mentioned band camp. He was like "Holy crap! There really is band camp?! I wanna join band!" Then I told him it was nothing like the movie. "You have to learn to read coordinates. And memorize music and show. And memorize stand tunes and parade and Christmas parade.... and march in competition..." He changed his mind. xD
Have you had people get the wrong idea about band?

Yup. First year of band:6th Grade~ People wanted to join band because they thought it was easy and wanted to skip art class. After Reality Check~ More than 5 people dropped out the first few days [and we didn't even have our instruments yet] sweatdrop

some kids joke about it around me but I set them on the straight and narrow real quick. There was one time in my 3rd period class where this football player that has a brother in the band sit down and lecture me on how much more difficult than marching band. I just kept telling him that they both have their own inherent difficulties. He just didn't shut up about it.

Yup~ My freshman year, EVERYONE at the school thought that marching was easy and it was just walking on the field... If they ever said that, the band would eat them alive with defense!

I've never had anyone underestimate band before, but I haven't heard anybody who wasn't in band talk about it. While marching band (band camp included) is quite hard, football is probably equally hard. They have hell week to go through (that's the official name for their practices before school starts). And trust me, that's no walk in the park either. I say each sport has their difficulties.

No. but I have a friend on an opposing school football team, hes the tenor player in their band, and has football on top of that, he performs during the halftime and doesnt get break because he has to play football.. thats CRAZY. He says it keeps him busy so he doesnt get in troublew, and he loves it that much. He is my hero i swear! He has band practice ever other day and football practice everyday, thats CRAZY, he switches during practices and takes time out of his mornings to practice for band, he is just.. WOW.

Have you had people get the wrong idea about band? LOL. I haven't had a school day that didn't involve someone using the phrase, "One time at band camp," who wasn't in band to begin with.

Have you had people get the wrong idea about band? Yes, all the time. It's sad really. That's why I don't like the American Pie movies.

I have this little disagreement going with my uncle and cousins who are really big sports people. My uncle talks about sports all the time and how hard they are, how rewarding, etc etc. My cousins used to play the french horn, but quit because they didn't have time with the sports. They don't believe me when I say marching band is hard work.
Oh yes, also "Marching Band? I don't want to join Marching Band. It's a bunch of marching cheerleaders with hats." - 8th grade percussionist.
I almost died... then almost killed him.
