Got a suggestion or an idea that belongs here? Want to tell other guild members what cramp remedies work for you? Post them here and I'll add them to the list.
~
Non-Medicinal Methods
- lying on one's stomach - sleeping - taking a hot bath - hot water bottle on your lower stomach - lying down with little movement, possibly rocking yourself back and forth - heating pad on lower stomach area - eating potassium (ie - bananas)
Medicinal Methods (Painkillers, etc)
- Tylenol - Midol - Pamprin - Birth control methods such as the Pill (obviously see a doctor first before considering this option)

Before I had my daughter I had horrible cramps which caused me to cry, stay home from school and stopped me from doing much else than lie down. I found that these methods helped dim the pain: -taking a hot bath -hot water bottle on your lower stomach -lying down with little movement, possibly rocking yourself back and forth

I find personally that any kind of heat on my lower stomach eases the ache.

I never really experience bad cramps but my high tolerance of painkillers/muscle relaxers its almost impossible to take care of them when they are pretty bad... One day they were particulary heinous and my friend told me to drink some pickle juice and they would go away... me being the optimistic drank a few swallows and much to my suprise they were gone within the hour....

I take Pamprin instead of Midol, since Midol doesn't work for me. Only problem is, sometimes it puts me to sleep. But I'll take napping over cramps any day.
In the winter, I also like lying under my electric blanket. I turn it up, let it get warm, and fold it over my legs and abdomen. It also helps with the backaches when I get them.

I have the worst cramps! I take Aleve, which seems to work better than Midol and Ibuprofen (other meds I've tried), and I curl up with a heating pad, and the pain is still excriciating! I mean, those methods do make a difference, but they're not enough. I hate my period . . .

i tend to get bad cramps the first few days of my period. I take aspirin and it seems to work wonders. I'll also drink caffeine and that seems to work for me.

I lay on a heavily-carpeted floor, on my stomach with my hands under my upper thighs (Palms to the thighs) and the side of my face to the floor and don't move. :] It wroks pretty good, and I even get a nap in sometimes. I also take Motrin IB, and sometimes use a heating pad.

My personal non-medication for cramps is to take a short walk.
I don't know why it works, but no matter how bad my cramps get they always feel better during/after a walk.

My cramps are usually worse near the beginning of my period and usually in the morning or after I get up.
Anyway, another thing that can work for mild to moderate cramp pain is laying with your legs up the side of a wall, perhaps with your pelvis elevated for a short while. This takes the pressure off your lower stomach and because you are focusing on something else can often help. So in effect you're kinda in a J shape up the wall, except the bottom of the J is only your butt, there is more os you to the left. ;]
For stronger pain I use some of the techniques already listed above and my good old friend - 'drugs' twisted ...

I had horrible cramps up until I was 19. Sometimes, they would get so bad that I would throw up, end up in bed all day, and I missed a lot of school because of this.
In those days, the only thing that would help was Midol, Pamprin, or Motron. (Depending on the age I was, I didn't know Midol existed till I was 16.) Anyway, I would take double the dosage and often times STILL have horrible cramps. I'd also use incredibly hot water bottles/wash clothes, whatever I could get my hands on. This would last the whole WEEK of my period.
Birth Control seriously changed that for me. My period went from being 7-8 days and completely heavy and painful to 2-3 days, light, and no where near as painful. My cramps are at a managable level. I can take a normal dose of Midol and feel fine. Maybe a little crabby from the pressure, but I'll feel pretty normal. If the cramps are just starting out, I can take a short walk and feel ok or use a warm washcloth or warm shower.
