I was just wondering, the things that tell you that you won something, if everyone knows it's a scam, why can't the government just shut it off the internet and protect the people who don't know?

thunderegg why can't the government just shut it off the internet and protect the people who don't know? If you mean shut off the internet in general, that would cause quite the amount of chaos for the world.
If you mean shut off the internet so there are no internet scams, there are so many generated each day that even if they were blocked out, more would end up getting through. It's like trying to hold a glass under a constantly running faucet. Not going to work out too well if you try to hold in all the water with that single glass.
So people just have to be smart and realize that it is a scam and not to trust people on the internet. With the constant lecturing I see almost every day on the news and special TV broadcasts, I don't think that will be a problem for most. Hope I stayed on topic, I didn't exactly get the whole idea behind the topic. xD

thunderegg . . . why can't the government just shut it off the internet and protect the people who don't know? Because Internet e-mail filters do not recognize certain words in the subject heading as spam message--words like "hi." Also, as long as there are keyboards, there will always be people getting around the e-mail filters. Block messages with the word "SEX" in the subject line, and the spammers counter with one that has "S-E-X" in the subject line. Block "S-E-X" and they counter with "s3x."

Send me ten dollars to find out. They haven't exactly found a way to regulate the Internet in a way that doesn't impede on the Bill of Rights. It's not like TV, which has a few established channels. Billions of channels and billions of scams are out there on the Internet.

A lot of the reason that the government can't do things is because so many of these scam companies are in other countries where there are different rules and guidelines.
Same thing when it comes to pirating movies and software. Any US site or bittorrent can be shut down, but say in sweden, the US can't do a single thing because it's no illegal there, despite US citizens having access to it.

The internet is not owned by a single governing body and thus not subject to very specific rules.
As well some business are not based in the US or other countries with business practice laws, and can therefore do as they please and may be very difficult to sue.
Answer: Be smart, stay educated and don't get yourself scammed

They're all scams, basically. You might have a very, very small chance of winning something, but the risks are not worth the rewards.

because the internet isn't just 1 program on 1 computer. it's a series of computers. so the goverment won't be able to track the junk down.

There are just WAY too many scams coming from WAY too many places and they're changing all the time, so there isn't really anything they can do, as far as they have tried. There may be some way that it can be done, but it hasn't been figured out yet.
Something that YOU can do though... If you use the Firefox web browser there is an extension called "Ad-Block" and "Ad-Block Plus" and you can get different filter sets for them that will block out many ads. I've found that they block out nearly every ad I've had the opportunity to find. They also provide the capability to block an ad that the filter set didn't find.

Even if the government was allowed to get rid of them, there are so many of the scams that they could not get rid of them all. It is illegal to post music and movies on the internet and people are actually trying to stop music/movie sharing yet the government still can't get rid of all of the sites that share them.
