So today I went to a Japanese resturant called "Arigato". I was sitting in the back when I overhear an older man atleast in his late 50s complaining about the name of the resturant. He was talking really loud and making rude comments. Then the waitress walks by carrying 3 big plates of food. He stands up and says "HEY!" really loud so everyone looks. She walks over to him, and he says "The name of this resturant is spelt wrong. it should be Arigatou. You forgot the U at the end" She just looked at him like wtf. She was obviously japanese and it was obvious her first language was japanese. She then said arigato and he was all "no! your saying it wrong. It's arigatouuuuuu" once again she's like wtf. So, she's standing there holding 3 plates of food listning to this guy tell her that her japanese is wrong and that they're resturant is wrong. This went on for atleast 4 minutes or so. Finally she was like "I'm sorry that we didn't put a U on arigato." and he looks at her, smiles and says "It's ok, just change it."
Seriously, what an a**. I can't stand people like that. Has anyone else ever ran into someone like that?

She should have gone into a full-blown rant in Japanese.
That's what I'd have done. xd

It's just a restaurant. That guy was just overexagerating, making a big deal out of nothing. So arigato is the name of a restaurant, not the actual saying. There's a sushi restaurant I've heard of called Kooma. If it were supposed to be Japanese, it'd be spelled Kuma. But hey, it's just a name.

It makes me angry when people like that try to tell people who obviously know Japanese, or at least more Japanese than they do, how to speak it. Really, it doesn't matter how it's spelt. Lots of languages besides Japanese have many different spellings when they're romanized. I mean, there are several different ways to spell the Russian word czar, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it is wrong. And he's speaking to a woman whose first language is obviously Japanese? I think he was most likely just being a show-off as well as an arse.
That guy was just ignorant, and really, it's not like it changes the meaning of the word. If you know the meaning of the word and it's not a blatantly obvious difference (such as koko vs. koukou, because I suppose it would have different meanings) then I don't see what his problem is. And the real time it matters is when you're pronouncing it or writing it in Japanese, not in English letters.
What an idiot. If stupidity were a crime, we wouldn't have enough jails.

Moron.
Obviously he was trying to make himself seem superior to everyone else because of the "obvious mistake" the people had made. After all "any decent person could see how wrong the name is"
I think the restaurant people made the right decision. Most people seem to be familiar with the word "arigatou" but only from hearing it. Few people out of the general population know the kana and know the actual spelling of the word. Since the restaurant is in America, it's best to use the spelling people are familiar with, otherwise I think they will kind-of recognize the word but also be confused by the "extra letter" or "strange spelling". Better to make the name something that is instantly recognizable than something that will make them confused.

Wow. If I were you, I would have yelled back at him that he shouldn't be saying something like that to a native.
And yeah, if I were the waitress, I would at least mutter something in Japanese and leave. Even if he kept yelling at me.

I'll remember that! 3nodding (and actually that's more of what I'd do because I'm really too shy to yell at someone I don't know. xp )
