I have a Yamaha Concert Edition Silent Violin (SV-120) and I recently broke my g-string (again) and I think that it's a tension issue. However, I am unfamiliar with string tensions and types. I have talked to some of my friends online who play the violin about what types of strings that they use but I thought that I would bring this up here -- just to see a little more life in this place.

The violin came with D'Addario Hellicore strings, I think they were light tension. I have ordered myself a second full new set of medium tension strings of the same type (down to the steel E.)

I am far more used to playing the guitar with steel strings and haven't had to order strings for it before (aside from just grabbing my favorite brand from the music store.) The violin has provided a completely different issue.

Does anyone have a favorite brand of strings? Anyone mix/match strings across different notes on the violin? Several of my friends who play happen to use different G and E strings than the other ones. In my case I am sticking with Helicore because I know them.

I'm not all that familiar with string brands myself. All I know is Red Label ones are cheap, and generally used on rental/school instruments, and my violin has Dominant strigs, which I've heard are pretty good. I might order some different brand name strings one of these days, just to compare.

Oh, I like the german one that starts with a "G"...i forget wht it's called. But the end that gets wound up at the scroll, all the strings (G, D,A, and E)are tied up with purple string (Now you know why i like them ^_^!). But the E string has the the purple string wrapped around it at the bottem end, as well. *sigh* That one just broke recently and the replacement one was another brand...no purple...Does anyone know which brand im talking about? The paper it came in was prnted with green ink..and it starts with a G....Please tell me if you figure it out cause i want to replace my E string..! BTW It's for acoustic violin. domokun domokun domokun

Hmmm... I'm not sure, actually. But Dominants are purple-wrapped at the top as well, aren't they? And at the bottom they're a sort of rainbow. 3nodding
