Yeah umm... we're just learning the last few sets of our closer, and I wonder if our drill writer is crazy.
It's at 160, and I have to go 4 sets in a row backwards marching a bit bigger than 6 to 5. That's cool though right. I can hack it.
THEN, I have to forward march 20+ yards (a bit more since it's diagonally), in 16 counts.
FOUR TO FIVE STEP SIZE AT 160?!
Yeah... the drill tech and the drum majors were all on me, and he attempted to do it with me... though he was in DCI for 5 years... and barely could. I cant even do toelift or walk it. But they don't want me to jazz run it. I have to literally like do a run hop thing.
We've got the drill writer the Cavaliers had, but I'm wondering if he even noticed how far he put me. Then next set up the point of a giant triangle the band makes across the field.... *shakes head*
Insane much? Anyone else had insane stuff like that happen?

its so funny cuz... he says "run back band" and we echo "Run" and run back.. and then everyone near me turns their head towards me to watch me do it... and they start laughing and some start "awwww"ing... and then i start laughing and trying to catch my breath when i get there.
there i am.. doing hurdles to my spot, man.

We've kind of got the same problem. Our drill writer, who is our former BD, has written drill for our closer that has the whole band jazz running at 160.

We have to jazz run at 152. Luckily, we're not playing at the time. Silent drill.

Actually yes, I've had drill like that too.
In our ballad, I have to move from the 5 yard line to the 30 yard line in 12 counts moving backwards at tempo 80 bpm. It would be much easier if:
a) I didn't have to play this long moving line and b) If the tempo was quicker
Anywhoo...you should be fine, last year, I had to "jazz run" backwards at 160 from 4 in front of the front hash to 4 behind the BACK HASH in 16 counts....Our drill writer was on crack.
They never even fixed the problem. They were always like "Oh don't worry flutes and clarinets, we'll work it out eventually...." but eventually never came.
This year, we get to tango in the middle of our closer, so that's a plus! And I get to set down my flute and be part of the gaurd, using double silks and lifting 10 foot pvc pipes with flags on the end...fun stuff!

Our first song is at 180! Nor what they have us doing is easy either. We are running all over the place. My first set in that song (well we have a shorter intro so I guess it is the second song out of 4) is 8 yards in 6 beats. Then we end the show with not 1...but 2 diamond cutters!
Yeah...talk about crazy. 180!!!!

I've never run so much in my life! The opener is set at 156, which means I'm very out of breath at the end. The second is a 6/8 movement with funky counts. The third and closer are set at 170! We haven't even got up to tempo yet and already I'm feel like fainting on the field! But even so, I still have tons of fun. I don't always make it to my sets, though. *scratches head sheepishly*

Gotta love those jazz runs.
It's sad though, half the girls on the guard still can't keep on the right foot- even though I'm behind them yelling, "LEFT! LEFT! LEFT!"
.... And then there was the "HEY. Let's put the guard members really close.... TWO STEPS APART!" gonk

I knew our the show you were doing was familiar. YES, I totally agree... But, at least our band director changed the set a little. Now we don't have to jazz run! biggrin

Last year we had a series of these stupid 4 count long sets where everyone had to jazz run at like 170+. We were in these little "podlings" where you get into groups of fours, and the whole series were called the crazy fours because nobody could really hit their sets. It was ridiculous, we moved like a yard line across and 3 steps forward for each four counts in these tight groups of like 2 step intervals. Not the brightest drill writer. Especially since most of us are still playing. >>
This year we have this woodwind block in the dead center as our last set, our woodwind section numbers nearly 100 and we have all of our horns up at like 2 front to back and 2 side to side. Half of us are moving back INTO the set and half of us are moving forward. So it looks like some total collision about to happen. -_-"
