I was wondering how other people did it. I play each individual phrase a lot, put those phrases together, and then go play them next to my brother's head to wake him up. xd

well, for memorizing music, not drill, i usually just play it a TON. ill play the whole song over and over again, and then work on the parts that i missed or forgot about. but really to memorize how the song goes, i have to hear the whole band playing it, then i can memorize which part goes where.

-[[Take a little bit of time everyday to reflect on bits and pieces of life. Relax and view life to its max.]]-

I memorize the count structure, if we're learning the drill about the same time, and I figure out where in the toodly-oodlies I move here or when in the phrases I move there. Then I just connect the dots. But if it's something like the first movement, for example, where we only have the music and all the complicated stuff (such as triplets at 180 xP) then I just happen to have played it so much that I know it by the time we put the show together. ummmm.... i really don't work on it that much.. only parts i need work on. i tend to memorize technical parts a lot quicker than anything else just because my fingers know what theyre doing.

during band camp and summer sectionals is when i mainly play it and that's when i memorize it.

I use mah uber photographic memory skillz playa! ninja

But in reality, I just take a mental picture of what that part of music looks like and when I play, I can see the lick in my brain. And when I am memorizing drill, I just recognize and remember my relationship to the hash and the yardlines, using mah shifty eyes, looking back and forth from the drum major to the form, drum major, form, drum major, form...

Memorizing isn't hard....when I was a freshmen, I was like,"OH MY GOD! HOW AM I GOING TO MEMORIZE ALL THAT MUSIC?"

But then, I realized, after marching it on the practice field, and playing the music with all the band, you begin to memorize it as a second nature or sense....it just comes to you.

it comes naturally because the bd makes us rehearse the music till our ears bleed at the mention of the song title.

I is the only freshman that has memorized the show, and I just sat there and stared at the music for about ten minutes, played it 2 times through and BAM i got it.

i start with like 5 measures and then i add 5 more until the end of the music.

I just play it so many times it is ingrained into my brain so that even if i want to forget it, I couldn't.

I learn by listening and fingering as a recording plays.

I just do it. My brain memorizes things really easily. Seriously. If I have my flute, I could play almost any solo flute piece i've played in the past couple years. Whole concertos included.

You play it over and over. And over again.
The muscles in your fingers develop something called "muscle memory".
When the fingerings become so ingrained into your brain, it gets so that sometimes you can even play without thinking. But I wouldn't advise that. Auto-pilot is never a good thing, especially in marching band.

How do I memorize my music?

I don't. My section is big enough that as long as everyone each gets about 1/3 of the notes right, we sound half decent.
