Ganguro girls, Gothic Lolita, Kogal, all these and more have been brithed in the recent era of the Japanese, and they have began growing more accepting and welcoming of outsiders, and with almost explosive growth have began taking on and assimilating themselves into the cultures and customs of other countries.
Some would say this is an important step into integrating the Japanese into the modern world, while many others see it as a degradation of, and even an insult to their own ways and culture, citing the lack of traditions practiced by the youth, and the dissapearance of the old ways of life.
What I want to know is, what do the people here think of the modernization of Japanese kids, and the nation itself? Has it benefitted, or detracted since opening up to the world? Should the new ways leave the old ways behind, or should they be blended?

Every culture goes through changes. They wouldn't grow otherwise. I believe these sub-cultures of the youth aren't such a serious issue. I'm sure american cultures said the same thing when any youth did anything or dressed different from the normal ways. The things of the past will be kept by the hearts that care for them and they will still teach them. Yet the "crazy" youth of new culturizations will grow new ways and ideas that may be for the better- either way humans learn from what they do.
It happens everywhere. Not a problem.

And I don't know what Japanese kids are into these days, since I live no where near Japan. sweatdrop

Well, it's hard to expect that Japan will stay in the era of samurai. Of course it's nice to remember about the old ways, but with the newer ages, civilisation has to go. By the way, the new Japan is kind of nice. But it would be nice to not forget the old ways.

And North America's home-grown emo-kids are any better? And there were the goth kids and the punk thing...
I was under the impression that even though these are cutting edge "trends" that only a few really take to the extreme that you see. There are plenty of normal balanced Japanese kids out there.

Yes, most japanese kids dont bother for this stuff, , and if you listen to a girl talk, you will be amazed at how Mature they speak. but we a more interesting topic is bullying, quite odd interesting, and tempting in japan.

I personally think that they should be blended. They should believe in their old ways, but also think of their present ways.

(Though all the emo posers at my school are starting to get on my nerves), I like the diversity that all the different things create. Actually, it'd be nice to have some traditional, some modern people in Japan, like an even mix or so. But even if modernization is happening, what was to be expected? Unless Japan built a Great Wall of Japan around itself and never had any contact with the outside world again, it was bound to happen.

There are two things that I see as inevitable here. The first thing is what the forum member just before me said - mordernisation was bound to happen. However, the second thing, which has not been said yet, is that the old ways will eventually be forgotten. It's called evolving, and it's happened many a time with other past things. Even if you think the old and new ways should be blended, eventually the old ways will leave. Simple as that.

Unless Japan built a Great Wall of Japan around itself and never had any contact with the outside world again, it was bound to happen. I THIRD that notion!! I have a lot of respect for tradition and how it should be respected this day and age, but I see it very detrimental to be stuck in old ways from way back when while an entire surrounding world forever grows and matures ahead of you. Keeping up with the ever progressing world of tomorrow outright DEMANDS having an open mind and a willingness to stay up to date because otherwise the rest of the world would want nothing to do with you seeing as you aren't trying to move ahead with the rest. Tradition should never be forgotten I completely agree becoz you can never know where you'r going unless you know where you come from, but some things have to be disgarded to the side in order to keep up. Sacrifices gotta be made, but I believe it's all for the better!

It's not my place to say. I think it'd be a shame if the old ways were abandoned completely, but change is inevitable. We'll see, I guess?
