Currently I'm 16 years old, a junior in highschool, and looking into going to art school. I plan in majoring in studio art with an enphasis on painting, and quite possibly art education.

I've been building a portfolio(yes- a portfolio) since my freshman year. As my art matures I add to it and take out weaker pieces. Doing so has allowed me to observe my growth and ability as an artist and make adjustments and practice certain aspects. This past summer I was offered an apprenticeship with a local arts organization because of the strength...But I plan on improving even more. I know the feild I want to get into is cut throat- but I am too.

Acrylic painting has been my love since junior high. I'll start off with my paintings from freshman year, and end off with my most recent painting I have photographed from the end of my sophmore year.

There were some images left out- pieces I believe aren't my strongest at the time.

A quick note- Between Sophmore and Junior year I took a 2 month trip to Japan, and consequently, away from the studio. I was not able to paint at all during this time. T-T It made me sad.

You can also see my other pieces in other mediums(as well as the ones I excluded) at my deviantart.

i LOVE your style! it's very distinct and contemporary. i think it's a good portfolio; not too strict, but not too loose. id like to see more from your imagination like the last one.

I really like the color! If you could expand you're imagination, you could have some very cool work. What you have now are great, though, and I like it! Two thumbs, way up!

It's very hard to judge artwork. I love the boldness of your work, it's very refreshing.

Just a pointer on portfolio building: make sure you put more than just paintings in it. Art schools look for someone who is well rounded (or at least somewhat proficient0 in other art forms as well. I remember going in for my Design portfolio review, and it was recommended that I had life drawings and landscapes.

But, if you're already doing that, then good job! biggrin

I'm trying. My skill with dry medium isn't as strong as my painting skill- but that's because I don't like it as much. I have a few large scale pencil and charcole drawings I've done, along with figures I've done in colored pencil(which most people love as well) Thanks for the comments.

@Riverawulf- I'm also working on that. Most of these paintings were prompts from my painting teacher or still lifes done in class. I'm working on expanding my imagination and confindence in my own thoughts and ideas...Which isn't very easy. I'm pretty easily imtimidated by judgement...

Thanks a bunch to everyone. I still have a good year before I start aplying to coleges and art schools- so all advice is helpful. Hopefully I can work out my biggest weaknesses now to stregnthen my work and applications.

Don't try to "blend" and make every color transition smoothly into the next. Let your brush strokes show through, and be willing to be bold.

It just comes down to have fun. Don't try to color in the lines, let the paint make the lines. (Remember, paint is opaque, so if you screw up, you can ALWAYS cover it up...Always)
